Only knickers in the Co-op

1981RickyVilla · 12/04/2026 18:02

A teenage girl (aged 15 or 16, roughly) in front of me in the Co-op was wearing a crop-top and a pair of knickers only. Not bikini bottoms, not short shorts but cotton M & S midi style knickers. I didn’t say anything (none of my business and she probably wouldn’t have approved my sartorial choices either). If I had been her mother, seeing her before she left the house, I would have said that it looked unhygienic and wasn’t an appropriate way to go to the shops.
YABU: People of whatever age can dress how they like when they go to the Co-op.
YANBU: A mini-skirt or pair of shorts are a minimum requirement when you’re off to the shops.

Hope it wasn’t the girl whose mum bragged she had fixed it for her daughter to get a job where she worked, in the thread “ what’s the worst thing you’ve ever done ! “

Haha
No,different women-the job we all have isnt that good!
I did read that with my mouth open-I couldn't believe the pride in the tone that she'd cheated someone worthy out of a job

I work with a young woman who showed up for her interview in a bra (it was a bra-it had the lace and hooks) and pants (honest to god,my pants are bigger)

Her arse cheeks and side boob where on display

She got the job because of who her mum is but my colleague (female) asked me why her mum didnt think to have a word about wearing just her undies was not a good idea (and again why her mum sat in with her for the interview-i know both are none of my business but it was odd)

Not a clue-I would have had words if it had been my dd (I have two but neither walk round in just undies)

Shes a lovely girl with a cracking figure (that id kill to have) but a job interview isnt the right time to wear just your underwear

Nobody apart from my colleague and I thought it was odd

Maybe im just old

While shopping today, I saw a young girl wearing a skirt ( if it can be called that!) half way up her backside, and a thong, her bare butt jiggling as she walked and it looked obscene! The two old gents sitting beside me said fxxxxxg hell! There is no way this girl didn’t know what was on display .

"Only Knickers in the Coop" sounds like it should be the title of this year's novelty entry from Azerbaijan in the Eurovision!

Loved every word of this, @EleanorMc67. A charity shop in Wimbledon treated me like royalty for the couple of weekends I spent clearing out my vintage/designer size tens 😂 Shops are less excited by the mass-produced size 16s (size 20 in old money, I don't delude myself) I now donate; it's a mystery.

The astonishment of less fashionable observers was all part of the fun, as in your restaurant experience. So was sashaying past them to the front of the queues for exclusive clubs! It makes me happy to see young people pushing the style boundaries now. Long may they offend.

Oh please let me delude myself for a bit longer ... I'm now a size 16!!!

And yes it was fun, wasn't it?!! No see-through dresses for me anymore ...

... but I am going to let my 23-year-old, size 10 goddaughter have a good rummage through the older stuff I've kept, & I hope she finds plenty of things to go out & offend in!!! 😁

Me, too! And my favourite dress in 1973 was transparent.

There is something to be said for "If you've got it, flaunt it". Not sorry for the flaunting years, my "it" disappeared sometime around the turn of the century.

I can still hear my dad shouting to my mum, when I was about 14: "Are you really letting her go out dressed like that?"!!!

My favourite summer outfit when I was at art college in my very early 20s was a black lace cropped bra top (Miss Selfridges!), fully midriff-baring, worn with an early John Galliano* long wrap skirt that was trousers at the back. Or was it trousers that became a skirt at the front?!

And my favourite clubbing outfit was a top that I'd had made from a vintage black 60s dress, worn with very short tight red velvet hotpants, thick opaque gold Wolford tights (that I'd spotted in Vogue & blew a hole in my grant to have!), & platform sandals ...

I once wore it to a posh restaurant to have dinner with my older, rather more cosmopolitan boyfriend. It was by the port, a couple of streets away from where certain working women congregated of an evening ... & when I walked in & everyone stared, I realised that people genuinely thought that my boyfriend was paying for other "services" as well as the meal ... 🙀!!

Then there was the cream ankle-length body-con transparent mesh dress (can't remember the designer, but another one I ate beans on toast for a month to buy!). I had to wear a flesh-coloured body underneath, but it looked at first glance (& probably second!) that I was naked underneath. That dress got me entry into an exclusive club in Paris that Madonna had just been knocked back from - the drag queen bouncers approved & let me in!

Anyway, I think what I'm trying to say is, 'twas ever thus!!! And I've had a fun five-minute trip down memory lane remembering those risqué outfits & my 20s ...

I feel a little sad about the "slutty" comments & moral judgements being made though - I was a very nice girl & didn't have my first proper boyfriend until I was 23!!!

(*I found the John Galliano skirt/trousers in a little remainder-type shop off the Portobello Road on my second-ever trip to London for not very much money - & was SO excited!! Years later when it/they no longer fitted, I think I sold it for £30 at a summer fair ... fool that I was!!! Probably worth a fortune now ... 🙄)

I'm going to choose to endorse this behaviour. I'm all for women's lib, and hey, if women want to choose to walk around in lingerie, I'm not a misogynist. I shall respect their right to do so 😂

Surely even at Bravissimo, they don't expect employees to walk around with their bras on show? Are male employees at Durex expected to wop their willies out all day whilst they're working in the accounts department?! Do the canteens at the factories where they manufacture those charcoal fart pants only serve cabbage, egg and beans?!

Unless it's something like a job as a lapdancer or a 'glamour model', why on earth would they expect employees to show for an interview in their scants?

And it was McDonald’s no less!! The last place you’d want to wear your best lingerie surely? All that hot fat and grease!

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 16/04/2026 09:31

Tigerbalmshark · 15/04/2026 22:44

Is this a job where underwear might theoretically be appropriate attire? Like Bravissimo? Or just a normal office job?

And does she still come to work in just her underwear, or was that her special interview outfit?

My friend posted on Facebook about a similar thing (a girl walking home from school in p.e knickers) and got flamed! She was only concerned for the girls safety

No,we work at a McDonald's and no,we both wear a uniform

She does seem to have grown out of wearing just her undies but on the other hand, its been a cold winter

Wow - I wonder if people like this look at everybody else and wonder why on earth they all choose to wear 'unnecessary' extra (outerwear) layers in public; or are baffled as to why clothes shops all sell so many substantial garments that would mean that people couldn't see your bra and pants out and about?! They must know that it's not the accepted norm, mustn't they?

Sounds like the channel Five version of Only Murders In The Building.

That made me laugh @DollopOfFun

Vnml · 14/04/2026 21:47

It’s like seeing 11-13 year olds girls wearing just a bra on top. It’s a bra as got the bra hooks n eyes

I don’t like this thing.

Underwear is called underwear as you wear it UNDER clothes. Not on show

GlobalTravellerbutespeciallyBognor · 14/04/2026 21:30

I’m old-fashioned and I dress
conservatively eg out for dinner this evening, a midi Biden dress with polka dots. You get the idea. 😂

Having said this, I would defend anyone else’s right to dress as he or she wants (legally!).

I am also nervous about people/the State policing women’s clothing, for obvious reasons.

Redandwhiterose · 14/04/2026 19:52

All sounds a bit nippy to me. I'm still wearing my vest and woolly socks🙂

dcthatsme · 14/04/2026 18:25

😂Somehow it's the detail that it was the Co-op that had me chuckling. Honestly what a fashion victim!

cotswoldsgal1234 · 13/04/2026 22:50

We went on a school trip to London in February. It was very cold. None of the girls had jackets and some were wearing vest tops. I kid you not.

Can always wear a north face over the knickers, total non-issue

thinkingofachange · 14/04/2026 18:19

come to a healthcare appointment like that and you’ll get a safeguarding referral 🤷🏽‍♀️
I also thought it would be about the knicker selection in co op

nomas · 13/04/2026 07:04

Did you tell the boys off for swearing too?

Of course

swimsong · 14/04/2026 17:14

RedRiverShore6 · 12/04/2026 20:49

I thought thread meant they were selling knickers

But anyway it was quite chilly and windy today where I live so must have been cold

Edited

This made me laugh. Never mind the decorum, think about the draught. Peak mumsnet. Thank you

Funny how you didn’t mention the boys being intimidating.

People do feel very brave shouting at young girls though.

Flipping heck you are something else.
The discussion is about a girl in underwear, not boys. I did not shout. I work in a school and in 17 years have only shouted twice. Part of my job is trying to help pupils be able to cope in the real world when they leave school. Sounds like you shout before you think.
