Do you have a source for this? This particular statistic is very difficult to measure, for obvious reasons.

Yeah how can you measure somebody not knowing something. They'll just never know it and are hardly likely to start filling out surveys about it.

There is a lovely middle-aged couple that live two doors away from me (I've been divorced for donkey's years, live alone with cats 😺) who are well liked, very community minded, chat to everyone in the street, have a lovely lifestyle it seems.....but about five years before they moved in that same husband asked me to have an affair with him when he was a regular at a petrol station I used to work part-time at. Obviously I declined, but he must've thought wtf when they moved in and he saw me. I now chat with both him and his wife like good neighbours do, but WE KNOW 😄

Imdunfer · 09/04/2026 09:07

My mother in law, when her husband wasn't around, made little secret of what a great time she had with all the boys in uniform working as a Fanny in Signals at Bletchley.

Her father was in the US working for mafia gangsters when she was conceived. None of the family ever talked about it but she was always known as "The Duchess" and looked nothing like the rest of the extended family.

"Father" returned very suddenly, unannounced, wearing a chalk pinstripe carrying a wad of cash. It was always assumed he came back instead of being arrested/assassinated.

I wish my family history was as exciting!

youandyourelk · 09/04/2026 09:06

I know a relative has died but I suspect others in the family don't yet know. I found out in a roundabout way. The family is completely fucked up so I'm keeping my head down. There's next to no chance of anyone finding out that I knew before they ever found out (if they ever do).

my mums famous home made steak pie that she’s often asked to bring to extended family gatherings is actually from the local butchers. She buys it and very carefully transfers it to her own pie dishes 😂

My SIL does this. She doesn't know that we know though. She makes a mean chicken pie. I'm sure she does the pastry - she is a very good cook really - but the chicken filling is the chicken in white sauce that you buy in tins.
I asked her for the recipe before I found out but she never 'got around to it'. Now I know why!

I know someone who was the innocent spouse in this kind of situation, believing the child was his until he discovered the truth. It was utterly, unalterably devastating for him - it sent him on a very destructive spiral and he’s not the same person any longer. It was awful to witness.

Edited

Me too , 2 of my cousins kids weren't his . Turned out his wife was having an affair the whole time they were married and before . The day they married she was having sex with the guy before the wedding. He didn't get a dna test on his eldest because he believed he was his . Doesn't see the younger 2 kids he raised for years because it would be confusing for the children.

It broke his heart to lose those kids , he adored them

A housemate from uni is still with the same boyfriend she had when I knew her. Really sweet guy. We’re now nearing 40. She’d put off having kids for ages when a few years ago he told her he really wanted kids and if she didn’t he’d like to move on and find someone who did. So she said ok let’s try for a baby.

Unbeknownst to him she continued to take the pill while “trying” for several years. Then pretended she couldn’t face IVF and cried it was probably all her fault because she’d had an eating disorder and he felt too bad to push it. So they’ve now given up. I feel so bad for him.

That's awful. I really feel for the poor man.

My NDN is a secret drinker. I saw 3 empty vodka bottles in my glass collection box when I put a wine bottle in it very late at night before it's collected at 07.00 the next day.
I kept watch next time & saw her.

I mean, that's not really juicy gossip is it. Just you being judgemental and presumptuous. Why on earth would she tell her neighbour that she drinks?! And how do you know it's her who drank it all?!

Jane143 · 09/04/2026 08:58

My old colleague used to shag several different men in the store room (not all at same time) I don’t know if any were aware of each other but probably did

Oh god I have a few (that I wish I didn't know!). The hardest one is that my uncle had a child with an AP who is a family friend. Her son and husband both believe they are father and son but we all know that it's my uncle. We have to see them regularly at weddings, funerals etc too.

IndigoBlueMauve · 09/04/2026 08:47

My sister’s new home was used by the previous owners to store drugs.

I’m not allowed to tell Mum! 🤣

My friend had an affair with her boss and had a child who looks exactly like the boss not her hubbie. She eventually 10 years later had a son with her hubbie who looks exactly like him. Luckily the daughter was blonde like mum and son was dark like hubbie. She eventually moved to the island and has no contact with ex boss who didn't know anything either! How people can do this shit is beyond me! But, she loves her money and stayed for the moola

Moved to the island? What island?

Oohhh I like this 🧐

I once found out years ago, that an ex colleague (married woman with two kids), was actually in a polyamorous relationship, and they all lived together.

It turned out that there was
"Husband"
Wife no. 1
Wife no. 2, who was also Wife no. 1's sister!
Wife no. 3
Wife no. 4, who was Wife no. 3's sister!!

They all lived together in one big house, and there were children with three of the wives.

And the best part?
He didn't work, he stayed home, whilst all 4 wives went out to work, and they all kept him!
He must have been living the dream.
And these women were all professional intelligent women. Think, nurse, teacher, vet type thing.

Still blows my mind when I think about it 🤯🤯

Literally couldn’t live like this! I don’t think I could control my rage if it wasn’t my turn for…well! You know!

Some of what I have read and I’m only up to page two (😬) is mind boggling! Poster with the sister who has a baby to another man and they know but her husband doesn’t, what a horrible situation and I’m actually horrified that no one has been honest with the poor guy who believes the son is his own. I don’t think I can keep a secret like that!!

One of my married work colleagues is openly having an affair with another colleague. They hang out and chat at work, go for breaks together and lunch together. They are both vile people and you can't say anything negative work related to either of them or the other will jump on you. They both think they are the highlight of the department and their manager panders to them.

The management know all about it.

I've asked to move departments because I am not being a bystander to this.

An anonymous tip off to the spouses of the despicable pair?

My neighbour, who is a pillar of the community in his 60s, is an utter sleazebag who makes disgusting passes at any young woman he comes across. I'm sure his wife - also a pillar of the community - doesn't know. (And no, he doesn't have dementia. This has been going on for years)

I worked for a very large national company. There was a young woman who was a real party girl and constantly late in/ hungover. After a couple of years of this she got the sack.
10 years later she got another job with the same company (managerial this time) in a different town. she never declared her previous employment and sacking and somehow the company never connected the dots. I can only assume it was because she’d got married and had a surname change…

Guy across the road is a real fitness fanatic, as is his wife. But every Wednesday afternoon, without fail, Dominos turns up with two large pizzas when I know he’s home alone, working. A few hours later, he emerges with the boxes and puts them in the bin, having polished off the lot. His wife is non the wiser.

😂

about to start finding out as the opening gets nearer.

Pun intended? 😂

Weirdly this conjures up images of a colossal disembodied vulva approaching through the urban landscape and ppl fleeing for their lives!

Omg! 😳

You might have us all beat already

Going back over 80 years, but.....my FIL had 3 sisters. Two were very outgoing and got married, the other (call her Jane) was quite quiet and shy (may have had unacknowledged mild learning difficulties). She lived with one of the sisters and her family. She was seduced and abused by her BIL, unknown to his wife. Jane became pregnant, and when asked by her sister who was the father, told the truth. She was thrown out and never spoken to again by that sister (who stayed married!). Other sister and brother helped her. She kept the child, bought a Woolworths wedding ring and called herself Mrs, and supported herself and him by doing cleaning/housekeeping jobs where she could take baby with her. He never knew who his father was until his mother died, when he discovered his two cousins were in fact his half-siblings. He is still alive, and quite philosophical about life.

Whatafustercluck · 09/04/2026 08:21

My bil cross dresses in private. My 17yo nephew has begun doing the same. Only my dsis and me (and my dh) know about bil. She found out a few years ago because a number of her items of clothing went missing. It all gives me the ick tbh.
