Will antisemitism ever be looked at and dealt with in the same way as Islamophobia is?

AIBU for thinking it won’t? Because it doesn’t seem to be the case in this country or my home country (Germany).

(I just googled because it didn’t seem right to have antisemitism in lower capitals, but apparently that is correct, as I thought)

Much love to the Jewish community, wherever they are.

I'm with you 100% OP. It will never happen, saldy, and the reason why is showcased in this thread - either people are "blind" to antisemitism, partly because, as David Baddiel puts it "Jews don't count" (it's systematic). Another reason is that people are outright racist but refuse to admit it and instead try to hide behind whataboutism or some attempt to try to change the meaning of words, eg refusing to accept that antisemitism means hate towards Jews, or saying that they are anti-zionists but also see it as perfectly legit that British Jews feels unsafe due to the conflict in the Middle East.

Many more are racist than they want to admit.

I work in a public facing role in a job with quite a high turnover of staff.

I have heard plenty of people speak out against Israel in the context of the genocide it is committing. I have heard plenty of people criticise zionism.

I have heard plenty of people spout islamaphobic nonsense, usually in relation to immigration.

However, I can, hand on heart say that I have never heard anyone I know say anything derogatory about Judaism or Jewish people.

but that’s just my experience.

CoffeeCup14 · 01/04/2026 16:29

There have been huge amounts of Islamophobia since 9/11. It's still there, but I think it may be blurred with general racism and andt-immigrant sentiment.

Antisemitism has also always been around but I think was muted for a long time. However, it has massively increased recently. I suspect the genocide in Palestine and (legitimate) protests against that have emboldened the anti-semites. People shouldn't have to hide their ethnicity and synagogues should not need security guards. Jewish children should not be harassed on the way to school.

I wonder if it's all the same hate, just targetting different groups of people at different times.

It’s just pointless.

The hate is too strong.

i will bow out of this thread now, but to the Jewish community on here: I hear you and I see what you are going through and I am sorry.

And as for what’s going on in Germany, I feel ashamed.

I never thought I’d ever agree with Tony Blair, but he was absolutely and one hundred percent correct when he said the left needs to end its alliance with Islamists

Edited

No, they need to end the unholy alliance with oil.

OP a thread written like this just propagates negativity and hatred. I assume you don’t care and knew what you were doing.

BillieWiper · 01/04/2026 16:26

I don't know for sure as I'm not anti-Semitic or anti islamic. Nor am I Jewish or Muslim. As far as I can see they're both reported in the press in a similar way and as being appalling and unacceptable.

I suppose in countries or areas where there are more Muslims than Jews, the Jewish population could feel more potential threat, and vise versa. But they seem to live alongside eachother in peace most of the time in the UK.

But any form of racism round where I come from is considered absolutely abhorrent. Lower than low. By most people. I hope?

ginasevern · 01/04/2026 16:23

@Usernamenotfound1 "people have strong opinions on Israel and Palestine, but I’m not sure that is hatred of Jews and the Jewish faith."

So how does that align with the burning of 5 charity ambulances, the fatal synagogue attack last October and a 17% rise in hate crimes towards jews which is significant given that they only account for 0.5% of the population of England and Wales. It should be noted that a proportion of that statistic is attributable to the far right, which is deeply chilling don't you think.

Basically religion in general is a stain on humanity.

Mosques and muslim people are also getting attacked.

Citruswood · 01/04/2026 16:25

LucyWestenra · 01/04/2026 16:17

And yet some Jewish mumsnetters have moved there.

Why do you think that is?

Please cite these official figures. Please also tell me how living in Israel is safe for those who oppose it's far right politics, how it's safe for the youth who are forcefully conscripted, how it's safe for Palestinians who are constantly attacked by Israeli settlers. Please also tell me about the roots of Zionism. Please tell me why Orthodox Jews in New York oppose the genocide and the far right Israeli government.

itsadlibitum · 01/04/2026 16:24

I am neither so don't feel particularly well qualified to say either way, but completely anecdotally I feel like Islamophobia is generally treated as more "acceptable" than antisemitism and I notice more of it than the other way around.

I do recognise there is current a lot of political dissent to Zionism as a result of the genocide in Gaza, but I would not say that is inherently antisemitic necessarily (although sometimes the language does cross over).

Clardigan · 01/04/2026 16:24

Hallamule · 01/04/2026 16:20

Because they believe they'll feel safer there - let's hope that it turns out that they are safer there. Meanwhile my cousin and Israeli family moved back (in her case) to Germany 3 years ago.

I spoke to my Israeli friend yesterday. They live near Tel Aviv. She normally has a dark sense of humour about what’s going on. But with the endless sirens and having to enter the shelters, and her son doing his National Service right now, she sounded out of her mind with stress.

FloralDeerPattern · 01/04/2026 16:24

With the amount of headlines a few ambulances got over the amount of headlines racist murders get I don't think that antisemitism is at risk of not being taken seriously any time soon.

Is Israel really safer than the UK or any other country right now? No, it's not.

It’s easier to be Jewish in Israel.

Neither are dealt with, so I guess it’s pretty level.

LucyWestenra · 01/04/2026 16:15

Oh go away.

Honestly

Just dont .

You need to stop being so full of hate. Progress won’t be made that way.

I am a Muslim living in the most Jewish constituency in the country. Because of that, the kids and I happen to have lots of Jewish friends. I have no Muslim friends here but we are still a strong community. I have been to many joyous bat and bar mitzvahs and my Jewish friends text me Eid Mubarak. We support each other and condemn both Islamophobia and antisemitism, and abhor hate attacks.

We need to fight antisemitism. But we don’t need to diminish the impact of Islamophobia to achieve that surely?

No, you go away. You seem to think that hatred is okay, only if it's not against Jewish Zionists. How is stolen land/colonialism and apartheid ever okay? Please explain like I'm 5.

LucyWestenra · 01/04/2026 15:50

There are many members of the Jewish community who feel they have to hide their heritage.

They shouldn't have to hide it, but they can hide it. Pretty hard to hide your skin colour and a lot of people will assume your religion from that.
Not sure that life as a British Muslim as as much fun as you think.

I may be speaking out of turn here, but I’d say most Jewish people are not anti-Zionist, because if the past few years have shown us anything, it’s that Jewish people need a ‘safe space’ to call home.

The fact that Jewish people have left this country to move to Israel because they felt under threat over here should give everyone pause for thought.

Is Israel really safer than the UK or any other country right now? No, it's not.

There’s a fair bit of Islamophobia/racism about too. Harder to hide brown skin as well.

one is not worse than the other. Like pp have said there is no place for either in today’s society.

It is indeed harder to hide brown skin. As a person of South Asian heritage it's essentially impossible to walk around in the UK without being perceived as 'other', and your appearance will trigger anti-Islamic prejudice as well as plain racism.

I've certainly come across Hindu and Sikh people from South Asian backgrounds who go out of their way to advertise that they're not Muslim, so maybe that's the flip side of Jewish people hiding (or at least not advertising) their backgrounds.

I once worked with a guy of Pakistani heritage who had OCA (oculocutaneous albinism). Consequently he was often perceived as 'white'. I had a few interesting conversations with him about it. Although his clearly unusual appearance was the target of curiosity and sometimes drew unwanted attention, his impression was that his career probably hadn't been harmed by avoiding some of the Islamophobic prejudice others in his community encountered.

People who feel oppressed should be uniting - not saying they’re having a worse time than someone else.

LucyWestenra · 01/04/2026 16:03

I’m not Jewish, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about ‘playing the victim’.

But yes, I’d absolutely say that the Jewish community are being persecuted once again.

And it’s not right.
