Will antisemitism ever be looked at and dealt with in the same way as Islamophobia is?

AIBU for thinking it won’t? Because it doesn’t seem to be the case in this country or my home country (Germany).

(I just googled because it didn’t seem right to have antisemitism in lower capitals, but apparently that is correct, as I thought)

Much love to the Jewish community, wherever they are.

Zionism isn’t a religion - the only way you can be against Zionism is that you don’t want the state of Israel to exist, and I don’t think anyone would say that about the USA, Australia or Canada, much less Pakistan or Turkey - all countries that were invented and entailed mass displacements of populations and in some cases actual genocide.

So the different, more negative, treatment that Israel gets compared to any other country is, if not antisemitic, certainly evidence of a troubling double standard.

I know Zionism isn’t a religion. That was pretty much my point.

i am against the principle of Zionism much the same way I am against colonialism. It’s the same thing, just justified by an old book. Israel is committing genocide, apartheid and war crimes in the name of Zionism, which is the reason they get “negative treatment”.

itsadlibitum · 01/04/2026 20:27

In my view no religion should be immune to criticism. The issue is discrimination against people practicing it.

but I am not sure what you describe is unique to Islam. On this very post people who do not agree with the principles of Zionism have been called antisemitic.

You seem to be making the comparison that Muslims are terrorists though.

So what? Is Islamophobia not as bad as anti-Semitism because there have been Muslim terrorists? Why does it matter if there have been Jewish terrorists or not? I don't see the relevance of terrorists when deciding if racism is ok or not.

Exactly this!!!!!

This thread is Islamophobic and i’m surprised it hasn’t been taken down.

How about the fact that the government in this country are going to appoint an anti Muslim hostility tsar, but no Jewish counterpart?

Is this enough for a start?

Lord John Mann is the UK Government’s Independent Adviser on Antisemitism since 2019 I think. Is that not an equivalent?

IMO the problem is that the term “Islamophobia” is also used as an allegation against anyone criticising (or “disrespecting”) Islam as a religion and I have a massive issue with making Islam into a special case. It’s fine to criticise ( or indeed parody) Catholicism or the C of E etc but a Muslim Labour MP seriously proposed a blasphemy law only last year - and wasn’t told by Starmer that that was totally inappropriate, which IMO he should have been. A catholic MP doing the same would have been told where to get off - and rightly so.

Racist comments about people are wrong - but why does the religion of Islam need its own specific protection that other religions don’t have? Was nurse Jennifer Melle any less a victim when a patient called her a n…. than if she’d been wearing a hijab?

Give me a list of atrocities perpetrated by Jewish people.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.aljazeera.com/amp/news/2026/3/15/we-killed-dogs-israeli-troops-kill-two-children-parents-in-west-bank

Does shooting a blind seven year old with special needs count as an atrocity? Does beating a 12 year old that survived the shooting count?

That's just last week. It would be very easy to compile a list going back over a year, but I bet that won't count for you.

‘We killed dogs’: Israeli troops kill two children, parents in West Bank

‘We killed dogs’: Israeli troops kill two children, parents in West Bank

Each person shot in the head in the village of Tammun, while two other children of the deceased couple sustain injuries.

But making this link IS antisemitic: nobody in London attacks Russian restaurants or Orthodox churches because of Ukraine, nor Chinese restaurants over China’s treatment of Uighurs and so on. Why should a synagogue in England be any more responsible for what the Israeli government does?

It was on response to OP challenging everyone to mention terrorist attacks carried out by Jewish people. As apparently terrorist attacks by Muslim people justifies Islamophobia.

Emilesgran · 01/04/2026 20:16

BollyMolly · 01/04/2026 19:53

Every bullet, bomb and missile fired by the IDF towards the Palestinian and Lebanese people is a terror attack if you’re indigenous to the region. Considering the current state of Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon, that’s going to be quite a long list of terror attacks.

Don't you think that plenty of us feel the same as you in that we’ve made peace with being called antisemictic if that’s what it takes to speak out against genocide in Palestine?

Edited

I've reported that post because that's how I read it too.

The more I read the more I think the OP is simply ranting about antisemitism to “justify” their Islamophobia. I can’t speak for Jewish people, but if someone was using discrimination against me to justify the discrimination of others I’d be pretty pissed off.

Clardigan · 01/04/2026 20:12

This whole thread was started from a position of hate.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/04/2026 20:02

They are both terrible.

But I really don’t think that antisemitism is treated less seriously than Islamophobia.

I genuinely don’t think I have any axe
to grind - I respect both communities and totally abhor any kind of racism or discrimination- but if anything I think the reverse is true in the UK.

According to the poll IABU.

Sane as every thread on here speaking out in support of the Jewish community.

I get it.

You can all bask in your antisemitic glow and pat each other on the back, saying what kind people you are.

Well, you’re not.

There are women (and men) in this country who are wearing their Star of David necklace under their clothes.

Children having to lie about their heritage because it’s safer.

I was shocked to hear from a mumsnetters that security around synagogues was a thing already years and years ago.

How is this okay?

I don’t give a shit what you think about the current war with Iran or Netanyahu.

Stop it with the antisemitism!

And if you don’t, then at least don’t tell yourself you’re on ‘the right side of history’. Because you’re not.

There’s so much more I could say, but what’s the point? The bigots and antisemites don’t want to hear it.

Keep screeching ‘from the rivers to the sea’ and follow each other like sheep, telling yourselves how kind you are while one mumsnetter’s eight year old boy has been terrified for months.

There’s no point though, you won’t listen. Jewish people are fair game to you.

Big round of applause for you all 👏👏👏

Start a post saying you are worried about the rise of antisemitism without bringing Islam into it and I'll engage positively.

I could talk about what I've personally done to challenge antisemitism, I could talk about why it's important to me. I could ask what British Jews would want to see others do to support them.

But that's not what you did. You started a post comparing Islamaphobia and antisemitism. People responded on that topic and you accused them of whataboutery and asked why antisemitism couldn't be raised without Islamaphobia being brought in. When it's in your thread title.

Noone has said anything antisemitic in this thread but you have repeatedly flounced about hate and apologised to Jewish people for having to put up with hateful threads like these. I'm sure you understand that, when people don't live near Jewish communities and don't see antisemitism in their own lives and then see people describing "please don't pit Muslims and Jews against each other" as vile hatred, they think you are making it up. I suspect that's deliberate.

You've also repeatedly said Islamaphobic things. Talking about Islamist alliances is no better than talking about Zionist alliances. Let's not make up global religious conspiracies. Justifying Islamaphobia by talking about terrorist attacks conducted by Muslims is no better than justifying antisemitism by talking about Israels actions in Gaza. People are not responsible for, or defined by, the actions of others who share their religion.

This false division is stoking antisemitism. Whether intentionally or not.

If standing up for the Jewish community means I am somehow Islamophobic then ok, go ahead and call me that.

Meanwhile I’d like you to list all the terror attacks perpetrated by Jews.

I’ll wait here while you make a list…

Statistics are disagreeing with you.

Figure 2.2: Number of religious hate crimes targeted against Jews and Muslims by month, year ending March 2025 (35 forces)

itsadlibitum · 01/04/2026 19:40

OP I agree that people shouldn’t be persecuted or discriminated against for their religion. And I am sure Jewish people are not having a great time at the mos
nt. But ranting and swearing and accusing everyone trying to engage/ not ranting with you of antisemitism isn’t going convince anyone you are right. You say you want a forum to share what Jewish people are going through, but you aren’t really sharing anything other than accusing everyone of being complicit.

Mintchocs · 01/04/2026 19:32

LucyWestenra · 01/04/2026 15:49

Thank you both for your replies, but surely anyone who has eyes and ears can see that Jewish people are having a much harder time of it.

I'm sorry if you had good intentions to post this, but please just stop because it os offensive. A race to the bottom of who is hated the most is just awful. Antisemitism and islamophobia are both skin crawlingly disgusting and not a reason for comparison. Both should be handled better. Im Jewish too. And I have lots of Muslim friends. All of this racism disgusts me.

ColdAsAWitches · 01/04/2026 19:22

LucyWestenra · 01/04/2026 18:57

But please, point out all the terror attacks across the globe Jewish people are responsible for.

We’re all waiting.

You could also argue that the response to the Munich Olympic attacks could be considered terrorism as they involved killing innocent people and blowing up hotels and offices in Europe.
