What age did you start feeling life was finally sorted?

To ask…what age (if at all) did you finally feel like everything was sorted, all was in place and you had it pretty much (as much as you can I suppose) all figured out!? I’m 41 and finally just feeling that way, after a fairly tumultuous few years, and years before that of waiting for one thing to happen before I can sort the next. I finally finally feel sorted with my family, my home, my job, finances etc etc. Now I appreciate things can change at any moment but it’s the peace I feel that I’m not waiting, I’m not striving and stressing, I can just live. I didn’t think it would take this long. What about you?

Never. I'm 62 and very, very lucky - 3 children, 2 adorable grandchildren, lovely husband, great career - but it seems every week I hear of a close relative or friend with a new nasty diagnosis, 2 recent life-altering road accidents in my family, war in the middle east, NHS struggling.... to name but a few. I love my life and it is just how I would have hoped it would turn out by this age, but I always feel we are teetering on the brink........Sorry

EdithBond · 29/03/2026 18:16

Haven’t yet. But then…

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”

Flicitytricity · 29/03/2026 18:16

I had a shingles jab and popped a reminder in my calendar for the essential second one in 6 months time.
I felt all smug, organised and finally grown up. Im 65.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 29/03/2026 18:15

About 38. Then a lot of stuff happened to remind me not to be so complacent.

Lifeomars · 29/03/2026 18:15

Never, I just seem to lurch from one crisis to another and I only have a few years left as I am old. I many ways this is a comfort as life has not been easy. There have been some glorious moments and some real happiness but I have had a lot of tauma and struggle like many of my friends and family. It has mainly been a case of enjoying the calm in between the crap. Never had much money, Iive in a horrible area and have had some very challenging life events. However I do have good memories and good friends

I'm 47. I'll let you know when it happens.

47 here too. I did feel like life was sorted around 44, we were “one and done” with a lovely young child, covid was pretty much over and i had found a new job at my old employer following furlough, redundancy and a few hiccups.
Then my husband became very seriously ill, needed a transplant, Liz Truss ruined mortgages, and we decided that our best hope for a stable future was to leave London. Selling up, relocating to a rural town etc and 3+ years down the line we’re starting to settle down again but know that nothing is certain and we have no idea what is round the corner.
Sorry to rain on your parade OP, just want to point out that settled and sorted is sometimes temporary, sometimes forever- you never know and don’t get to choose. Hope you’re settled and sorted for life though! X

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 29/03/2026 18:13

I'm 58 and it hasn't happened yet. Lots of serious family stuff and I'm now living in a room.

TheGreatDownandOut · 29/03/2026 18:12

Last year when I turned 41. Financially I’ve been ok for a while but last year I learned to fall in love with myself.

Onebigargh · 29/03/2026 18:11

50 and then spent a couple of years pinching myself that I had it so good and an in position I never ever thought would be . Happily married, dream house and looking at retirement.

ToadRage · 29/03/2026 18:11

I'm 39, my husband is 44. Just as things start to settle down something else happens. That's life with a progressive condition, there's no warning when suddenly you can't do something that used to be so easy. There were times when we seemed to be settled in our jobs, I had the same, stable one for 12 years whereas my husband would spend a few years somewhere then his confrontational nature would upset someone and he'd be moved on, the times between jobs were always the hardest. The uncertainty having to rework the budget, tighten our belts and burn through our savings to live on one wage til he found something else. From the outside things look settled now but I know there is a fire burning in the background, the arguments with the council about my benefits and care, its too stressful for me to deal with so he takes all that on. One day it will all be settled, it must be but I don't if I'll live that long.

Totalinsanity · 29/03/2026 18:11

My 30s I really felt I’d got myself sorted - happiest time of my life. My 40s have been a shit show however …it can all come crashing down so easily😞.

elmo1990 · 29/03/2026 17:44

I'm 36 and still wish there was an adultier adult to tell me what to do 😂

My mum died 7 years ago when I was 60 and she was 90. It made me feel like an orphan, and the feeling hasn’t worn off yet.

Daisythepussycat · 29/03/2026 18:08

Still waiting (I’m 67). Not decided what I want to do in terms of career yet… 😀
I have always thought that true adulthood would come when I understood how to fill in a tax return, but I am still waiting and so that can’t be it.

Sharptonguedwoman · 29/03/2026 18:07

Late 60s. Still working towards…..

DesperatelySeekingHelp · 29/03/2026 18:05

We have had such a run of bad luck in the last few years, health issues, redundancies and currently dealing with another redundancy so 55 and 60 and still nowhere near sorted. Should have had mortgage paid off by now.

RosesAndHellebores · 29/03/2026 18:05

I'm 65. One thing sorts and another thing starts.

DC progressed from nursery to infants to juniors to secondary to uni to work from gfs and bfs to dils and prospective sils.

DS will be a father soon, dd married, mother and mil are in their twilights.

It's never all sorted, it just changes.

Kave · 29/03/2026 18:04

74, I’ll let you know. Mind you, I finally understand my gran who said, c90 yrs old, “I’ve finally got the house how I want it”. She’d moved in in 1935.

Mumoushka · 29/03/2026 18:04

65 and still wondering

PracticalPolicy · 29/03/2026 18:02

I got there in my mid-40s but then had to leave my job in my mid-50s and haven’t been able to find another one for over a year. So now I don’t think I have it sorted at all.

WestwardHo1 · 29/03/2026 18:00

51 this week and I have never felt settled and sorted, apart from a brief period during 2021/22. I thought this year might be the year but the war may cause my business to go tits up.

MyHorseAndMe · 29/03/2026 18:00

I’m 53 and I’m still not sure my life is sorted

Meadowfinch · 29/03/2026 18:00

Ds was 3. I'd left his dad, we'd come back to our home town, I'd bought the house that would be our home for 15 years.

I had a good job, ds had a place in a tiny village primary with an ASC, I was free of all the people who had let us down over the years and we settled down to enjoy home life. 😊

Laurmolonlabe · 29/03/2026 17:58

About then,but l don't have children.
