What age did you start feeling life was finally sorted?

To ask…what age (if at all) did you finally feel like everything was sorted, all was in place and you had it pretty much (as much as you can I suppose) all figured out!? I’m 41 and finally just feeling that way, after a fairly tumultuous few years, and years before that of waiting for one thing to happen before I can sort the next. I finally finally feel sorted with my family, my home, my job, finances etc etc. Now I appreciate things can change at any moment but it’s the peace I feel that I’m not waiting, I’m not striving and stressing, I can just live. I didn’t think it would take this long. What about you?

Different aspects of life settle at different times really. Financially, I felt 'settled in early fifties - mortgage almost paid, no more money struggles, a little bit put by in savings at last. But emotionally, if you have kids, I wonder if you ever feel settled. There's always something. I'm a grandma now but it never ends.

Unfortunately I’ve experienced many false starts on the sorted front… just when u think… ahhhhh some cretin ruins it!

Menopausalchunk · 29/03/2026 18:42

Still waiting at 52, had my family later in life though so they are still in school. Been a nurse for 32 years but I am going into aesthetics to see if I can get a better work life balance. Not full time just enough so I don't need to work crazy hours like I have been doing lately.

gingerninja · 29/03/2026 18:39

About 51 when the mortgage got paid off. That relieved a pressure I didn’t really know was there. That said, teenage and young adult dramas as they adapt to new chapters is ongoing and surprisingly stressful as is now trying to save for retirement so I think thinks just shift rather than resolve.

Ha, hate it when it’s calm and quiet, because inevitably there’s another storm coming! Think I'm now so used to stress it’s our normal. Maybe when we sell our business and retire!

@TheHouse reactive ambition is such a good way of putting it.

We’re very similar, DH and I are equally still together happily after all these years. Something I recognise now I’m older as being very lucky, the odds were stacked against us but we grew up together rather than apart, makes a relationship quite special I think, of course the beauty of youthful ignorance is I didn’t consider it going any other way at the time!

This sounds similar to DH and me. We had children young, I did my degree in my 40's and we just got on with earning and with life to hold it all together for ourselves and our four children.

As for being sorted, it comes and goes doesn't it? I'm in my 70's, have downsized and simplified my life, have someone to look after my finances, but like most of us I can find something to fret about at 3 in the morning.

I also have a self-destruct button - I was very happy in my late thirties and early 40's but became complacent and started making mistakes. Hopefully I can resist this now!

Travelfairy · 29/03/2026 18:35

Any day now!

WaryCrow · 29/03/2026 18:34

50 and waiting. I’ve watched too much neoliberalist destruction.

I keep my eye on a podcast, ‘Fall of Civilizations’. Every episode starts the same, ‘imagine how it feels to watch your world collapse around you’. I don’t need to imagine it.

RaininSummer · 29/03/2026 18:34

63 and not there yet.

BlahBlah2025 · 29/03/2026 18:33

Never? What sort of question is that? LOL!

I hope it might come one day but I don't think that's the human condition. We're primed to always want more of something.

22Flowers · 29/03/2026 18:32

60 here. Yeah, in the last year or so.

I'm 60 and I still have no clue what I want to be when I grow up.

I don't think anyone ever feels like their life is finally sorted, for most people I think "life is finally sorted, for now" is more apt.

Yes I think that’s exactly it, for now!

Newusernameforthiss · 29/03/2026 18:29

Yeah I felt like that then my husband came off his bike and was in intensive care with a brain injury, we are slowly rebuilding our lives. So don't take it for granted 😉

Haribitch · 29/03/2026 18:28

Probably around 38. Finally a house we’re happy with and proud of. Own more of it than is mortgaged. Nice holidays each year. And most importantly DC happy with school and doing well.

Doesn’t mean we don’t have family we wish we hadn’t lost, or others were not worried about, or that jobs aren’t stressful. But things that are within our control are good, which means the things outside of our control don’t feel quite as stressful.

anon666 · 29/03/2026 18:28

Yeah, 50. When my eldest daughter left home, I missed her so much yet what was left felt manageable.

I worked 3 days, looked after the two cats. My youngest didn't need much input by then (aged 18) and so I felt like I had time, space and permission to get my act together.

Sadly, that was about when I realised that the intermittent bouts of pain were due to a chronic pain condition rather than peri-menopause. So that was a blow. But at least life wasn't also chaos by then. In fact maybe that's why I was finally able to pursue medical help instead of lurching from crisis to crisis. 🤔

74, I’ll let you know. Mind you, I finally understand my gran who said, c90 yrs old, “I’ve finally got the house how I want it”. She’d moved in in 1935.

😂😂😂

Weirdconditionaltense · 29/03/2026 18:27

Would have said 59 if you'd asked a few weeks ago. Then I got the results from a medical test. So not sorted at all now.

Lostinmiddleage · 29/03/2026 18:26

I felt like it (pretty much anyway) in my mid thirties to mid 40s when our 3 kids were little, it’s just felt good. Now I’m in my 50s and I don’t feel like that at all, maybe menopause combined with teens (they are all great but the worry just increases every year in my opinion - exams, more exams, driving, more exams 🤣). Not sure who I am any more whereas I did before kids with an interesting career then as a mum.

ScottishSheepie · 28/03/2026 16:15

I’m still waiting for that moment…

so am I!

needaglowupnow · 29/03/2026 18:22

I'm 52 and have given up waiting. It's just never going to happen for me. I was heavily abused throughout my childhood and some of my adulthood so that maybe why.

I have the most wonderful teenagers/husband and will keep myself alive for them (if I'm lucky). This life has been an ongoing upheaval of me internally kicking and screaming since age 8.

I wish you the best and really hope it happens for you soon x

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 29/03/2026 18:21

When I got sober in my late 40s.

Lifeomars · 29/03/2026 18:21

Daisythepussycat · 29/03/2026 18:08

Still waiting (I’m 67). Not decided what I want to do in terms of career yet… 😀
I have always thought that true adulthood would come when I understood how to fill in a tax return, but I am still waiting and so that can’t be it.

Today I downloaded and renamed my water bill, called it "Water Bill 2026" and felt very grown up and organised Will probably never look at it again!

Robertplantgoddess · 29/03/2026 18:20
