What’s wrong with me, hospital clueless

elm26 · 26/03/2026 15:24

Yesterday at 1pm, I put my 6 month old on the rug with his toys and went for a wee.

As I was walking back I had a sudden severe pain in my right side radiating into my lower back and up to my shoulder, I was in agony.

I called DH who was luckily only on a job 15 mins away, he came straight home and took one look at me and called ambulance, I was shouting out in pain they gave me gas and air and morphine.

I had an emergency CT when dye last night and also have a catheter as lost the ability to wee. Nothing showed on CT, they got me settled on morphine and today I’ve had a transvaginal scan which shows ovaries and womb look normal.

Gynae can’t find a reason so they’ve stopped painkillers and just giving me paracetamol but somethings wrong I feel like somebody’s twisting my insides. The gynae consultant was horrible and said the surgical team will come see me if they think it’s worth it?? So I’m waiting for that if they come.

I’m in so much pain and genuinely scared they’ll send me home not knowing what is wrong with me.

Has anyone has anything similar?

@Flicitytricity another here that thought your advice re bookmarking was helpful.
It has taken me ages to realise that just bookmarking doesn't work and that you also have to watch.
But anyway , wondering how poor OP is doing today.

Bookmarking makes sure you're place on the thread is marked. Watching puts the thread on the bookshelf.

I didn't realise you already knew.

Bullshit. Your last post was goady.

Nothing to add but I’m so sorry you’ve been through this, it is getting harder and harder to advocate for yourself successfully as a woman, I think as we generally put up with a lot of pain and just brush it off because of this!

Endometriosis? Theres a strong chance they wouldn't find that on a TV ultrasound and it can cause that pain.

Sorry OP, just saw the updates, nevermind this!

It's quite an assumption to say that anyone has failed in their care. Firstly, lots of tests were done, none of which showed a significant finding. It's not justified to just 'root around and take a look see' if there is no clinical indication and the patient isn't acutely unwell.

Secondly, @elm26 hasn't yet received the results of the biopsy. Even if it is Chrons Disease, the incidence in the UK is 83 per 1,000,000 people, and only 6-16% are diagnosed after an acute/emergency presentation. So that means 4-14 people per million would be in this situation. A typical Gastro consultant is likely to treat 30,000 to 40,000 patients in their career, so it would take 2-5 Consultants worth of careers, potentially, to come across this (if indeed 'this' is what it is).

There is a saying in medicine: 'if you hear hooves, think horses not zebras'.

To my eyes, the treatment was appropriate. Initial tests and examinations yielded no obvious cause for the pain. When the patient represented, they re-evaluated and decided that an exploratory laparotomy was warranted. They didn't find any obvious surgical need but did see some fluid, so they took a biopsy. Treatment plan pending results.

Sending a patient home in severe pain with no cause of that pain found is not appropriate treatment at all. I have never been discharged from hospital when in severe pain, even when I've wanted to the doctors have said they won't until the pain is under control with painkillers I can use at home.

There's also the flip side. People are triggered and feel anxious on behalf of a faking OP.
They spend time thinking and posting to help.
It dwells on them.
They post.
With their full chest.
and it turns out to be...

Countless deleted posts from people like you on this thread though, everybody knows what you think now…

No need to be triggered, your work here is done.

I do wish MN was faster to ban troll hunters. They can ruin threads and make genuine posts feel awful

RosesAndHellebores · 30/03/2026 01:11

@Lougle well it was sub optimal enough she was blue lighted back within hours. I would presume that if morphune can cause low bp and sats, any half decent clinician would see how the patient fared for 6-8 hours without morphine. Perhaps we should also presume the clinicians had wax in their ears that prevented them from listening - it appears to be an occupational hazard.

Lougle · 30/03/2026 01:05

RosesAndHellebores · 30/03/2026 00:40

@Lougle ah, so they didn't discharge a very unwell lady then with low BP and less than optimal sats whose pain required morphine to manage having messed her about and having not communicated well for a couple of days?

You think that's acceptable?

Morphine can cause less than optimal sats and low BP. So, not being part of her medical team, I can only presume that they felt that on balance, her symptoms were iatrogenic rather than organic.

I'm not saying the care was necessarily optimal, but there is a country mile between suboptimal and neglectful or negligent.

@elm26 I am so glad that you have finally been helped and that you may now get to the bottom of the issue, it must have been very scary not to be believed.

My question - for those that know -

Will the medics, who basically failed in the care that was delivered over the last few days, ever be spoken to??
If only so that if they meet someone in a similar situation again they might think a little more??

Eviesmum71 · 29/03/2026 22:21

Not sure - but I suffered for ten years with an undiagnosed spigelian hernias one was lower left and one was lower right pain . The pain would come on suddenly and felt like my bowel was twisting inside - coming in waves of severe pain - I later learned it was the large bowel incarcerated . A spigelian hernia is rare - it is deep within the tissues and is hard to spot . A good radiologist ultra sound consultant will find it . Pay private £ 230 and see

MyObservations · 29/03/2026 22:07

@RosesAndHellebores I'm rather glad they introduce themselves with a title. I like to know who I'm dealing with and there's been too many instances, in my experience, where "physician associates" are considered to be doctors! As for me, I'm not that bothered whether they use my first name or not. Interestingly though, a number of years ago when I was visiting my aged mother in a care home the staff were saying my mum wasn't communicating. Apparently she would respond so I asked how they were addressing her. The reply was "Eileen". I reminded them that she was of a generation where her next door neighbour of 25 years called her Mrs Smith so try being a little bit more formal and don't use her first name. They tried it and it worked - funnily enough.

RuddyLongCovid · 29/03/2026 22:03

I have been thinking about you and wondering how you are doing. I am so sorry this has happened. Hope you are recovering ok and you are home soon to see your little ones x

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 29/03/2026 21:48

What a scary update OP. So glad you are now being taken seriously and being looked after. I hope you get some answers. Your poor DD - not ideal but can’t be helped. Sending hugs 🤗

Smittenkitchen · 29/03/2026 21:13

So sorry you and your family had to go through that again. It was so clear from your posts that something like that was going to happen.
It's just unbelievable how decisions are being made which go against what is clinically necessary, because of need to clear beds etc.
I hope you get answers and appropriate treatment very soon and don't ever have to go through anything like that again.

So very sorry that you've had such an awful experience OP. Please don't let them discharge you again until your SATS and your BP have come up to more respectable levels.

If you feel up to 'naming and shaming' once this is all over (but not, clearly, if you have anything legal going on!) then I'm sure that those of us with a connection to Surrey would be most grateful!
