The new EU passport control system for non-EU is totally idiotic and crap and will permanently make holidaying in Europe worse

Sure, still probably better than the US (and no need to say anything about the UAE etc for now) but still shit.

  1. Why are there stupid kiosks dotted randomly about, just put them in the line everyone waits in so the queue can be orderly and everyone literally knows where they stand.

2.Clearly mark the line so people don't wait in the wrong one for an hour before being told they have to go to the back of another.

3.The fingerprints machine cannot properly take fingerprints (anyone who has worked in a fingerprinty job knows this, it's all for show) so maybe just park that or if not then at least get some alcohol wipes for between users.

None of this will happen ofc it's random shitty kiosks til we die. Or rejoin the EU. So the first one.

Toulouse was brilliant in october. Marked queues. Took 5 mins.

All my family have Irish passports. Sadly you don't get one through marriage. So I have been known stand up and run to the front of the plane to get to the front of the queue while DH and DD saunter through the EU queue.

As the spouse of an EU citizen, travelling together, you should be able to go through with them.

Given that the UK was never a member of the Schengen agreement, this would have happened if we were part of the EU

If anything it reinforces why it was a positive to leave...the EU can't organise a piss up in a brewery. This system has been delayed time and time again. We visited Tenerife in January, we registered and used the system to enter...it was broken when we left a week later.

So the EU have introduced a system that fails repeatedly, doesn't seem to have clear guidelines and fails to do what it was intended to do, regulate and monitor who comes and goes.

So British people, who take more holidays abroad than most countries (70 million I believe) will visit Turkey, north Africa, Dubai etc (when Trump stops fing around) rather than the EU to the detriment to those countries

Compare the EU system to our system with ours that allows UK, Ireland, EU countries, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, United States passports to go through the e-gates.

Funny that Irish citizens are exempt owing to being in the EU then.

I mean no. Some idiots demanded a thing and didn't define it and Theresa may tried to make it less insane than it could be but kept being voted down

Glad I'm nearer death than birth but sad for all the kids

Got back from Malaga last week. Arriving was a complete nightmare. Long queue of people trying to complete the information on the screens, with just 1 person to help. Took ages to get through to the final page that says go to the e-gates. Except you don't. You then had the long regular security queues where they stamp your passport. I don't want to think about what it'll be like in summer.

On the way back I was stressing as I was told to allow loads of time to get through the new checks but when I got to control there were no queues, the officer took my passport, scanned it on the machine for me, I went to the desk for passport stamping (still no queue) and I was through.

weren't we promised frictionless movement and trade?

didn't some people say that exactly this would happen?

much better off blaming everyone else than the people who promised unicorns eh, they wouldn't have lied for their own gain would they?

Bloody remainers fault clearly

Definitely trying to punish us. It’s ludicrous because technically once you have done it you are not supposed to have to do it again. However each time I have traveled since it came in I have had to go through the checks again. I know someone who works for a coach company and he travels weekly and every single time he has to go through this daft rigmarole.

The EU has not published clear guidelines and I think Spain will require the kiosks every time forever as a result (possibly a purposeful interpretation to reduce tourism but that would seem a bit daft)

I think the Spanish for example aren't keen on tourists at the moment.

Yes agreed...getting into the UK is perfectly fine and we don't have a go slow on EU entrants on the basis we aren't making a Brexit point. If thats whats happening in EU airports.

EU incompetence & bureacracy every single f-ing time. And no, nothing to do with security as we can tell by the 100s of 1000s of illegals Europe is pushing in our direction.

Dude, Boris Johnson admitted to letting folk in to reduce inflation caused by Brexit x covid

Well many countries are trying to discourage tourists. I assume that's why they are making it as annoying as possible. I did read there is also a deliberate go-slow for UK passengers to make a point about Brexit; whether that is true or not I have no clue.

What utter tripe.

Poppingby · 23/03/2026 18:20

Shall we just rejoin then? Seems as good a reason as blue passports.

I took a short break to Rome in January and was surprised at how quick we got through passport control. Both DH and I are UK passport holders and passport control were literally waiting for us. We were through quicker than the EU passport queue.

Is that through the airport at Jerez which most UK carriers seems to use, or the actual airport at Seville.? Interested in the answer either way.😀

I meant Seville itself but likewise interested in either

It's all adding so much stress to journeys to and from the EU now. Well for those with non EU passports anyway. I'd hate it, says she clutching her EU passport with super glue!

Even so, the queues can be dreadful for EU passport holders also. I often wonder if it's a subtle go slow on behalf of border control agents.... I mean, take Malaga for example, they have refurbished the airport etc. but the airport operator AENA don't seem to have any say in making the immigration system any more efficient. I can't understand it. But hey manana, manana I suppose. And maybe the immigration is a Government operation, outside the control of the airport operator.

My DH wants to go to Barcelona region later in the year (wars and fuel permitting). We've decided if we do go that we'll use REUS instead of El Prat and stay in Tarragona, travelling into BC for a couple of day trips. REUS being a smaller airport. It's adding more decisions to what should be a straightforward journey to Barcelona and back. IMO anyway! And that's WITH EU passports!

You Brexiteers are to blame for this. We would have seemless travel with no stipulations if we had remained in the EU.

I mean I think systems should work regardless

Hamburg is fine. Probably other German airports too. Just stay in the UK OP. Your country needs the tourist money most.

Yes the UK needs tourist money. Genius idea then to vote for Brexit and make travel loads more complicated, costly and inconvenient for our nearest neighbours.
DP works in a field that’s related and the financial loss to UK institutions and attractions is significant.

This is one reason why I am seriously reconsidering a planned trip to the UK in the next 6 weeks. Loathe to pull out as its a celebration of 50 years since leaving school & would be terrific to catch up with people in person.
I have valid EU and UK passports. I understand that, if I fly, I need to book the outward flight with my UK passport, then change the details during my trip to the EU one. Not entirely sure how this would work.
Am considering driving in my EU car, so assume I just show the UK passport at Calais and the EU one on the return trip, but again not sure how this would work as you need to give passport details when booking the chunnel.
Unless I am now forced to book 2 single journeys, for both scenarios, which will be expensive.
I have always used the EU passport since I got it and gave only once been given the third degree on why I was travelling to the UK in 2023 by some jobsworth at the airport, who started asking me all sorts of questions about my trip, which were, frankly, none of her business. She soon stopped, when I told her I was going to a funeral and would it help if I showed her my UK passport.

It is the business of the border force to ascertain why people are coming into the UK and where from.

SabrinaThwaite · 21/03/2026 21:57

Moveyourbleedingarse · 21/03/2026 21:01

Sadly not! You have to get your passport stamped in the correct queue.

I've tried going in the EU queue. with DH in Copenhagen and with my daughter in Vienna and I get pointed to the rest of the world queue instead.

The only time it did work was in Lisbon when DD was under 16 and when she got to the booth they asked where her parent was and I got beckoned over and we both got through quickly.

I’m in the same boat. When passport control asks if you’re travelling with anyone I say with my EU husband and point in the vague direction of the arrivals bar and I’m let through.

Thebossofhim · 21/03/2026 21:52

Re Malaga airport, coming in, machines couldn't recognise my fingerprints so directed to manual border check, massive queues. Was dreadful.
I was so worried on leaving, however, we went extra early, went straight to passport checks after security, didn't linger, looking at shops etc, there was no queue and this time we went straight to the passport control, followed the instructions by the border officer, fingerprint machine worked first time and we were through. Then we could relax!
When we dropped the bags off, we were told which gate area to go to, this was Jet 2.

Fancy paying to line up and be treated like a criminal when undocumented people are turning up in inflatables.

There is a world beyond Europe. Vote with your wallets.

I can think of a popular non European holiday destination where that happens.
