If you have a wind chime do you consider your neighbours?

I worked with someone who LOATHED his neighbours chimes. He attached long sticks to a pair of scissors, whenever it was windy he would go out in the middle of the night and snip the string. Took a few goes but eventually they never put them back up.

I have some but don't have any neighbours. I can't hear them when in the house and they're great for keeping foxes out. No issues with foxes in my fields but not near my chickens where the wind chimes reside.

I did consider my neighbours, so moved my windchimes closer together, so they didn't 'tinkle' much at all. However, last summer my neighbour, whose back garden borders my own, placed the squakiest chair swing right behind my seating area.....and it drove me mad.

So this summer I may separate my chimes again and give them free will to tinkle once more.

bought a house which has a lovely garden with beautiful trees, flowers and shrubs etc. For the first three years I would moan to DH and the neighbours wind chimes going off all the time. One day I mentioned it to our neighbour as I had enough and she laughed and said they aren’t hers they are at the top on the tall tree for years as the children who used to live on the house climbed it once and put them up there. I was mortified. We called a gardener to come and get them down

We have one but I take it down when very windy because it drives me batty, not the neighbours. They have howling dogs that either wake me up or are let to bark for hours on end. So if they get annoyed at my chimes, well, good!

No, I don’t care, and I also don’t care if you or anyone else berates me, so bring it on, it’s not going to stop me hanging my chimes this summer.

Nope, because I do consider my neighbors.

I love wind chimes but I don’t have any because I don’t want to force my neighbours to hear “my” noise. But no one knows I am being considerate of course 🙂

And so many solar lights, my neighbours recently have thoughtfully installed garden lights that of triggered by me walking into my own back gate presumably to alert them to when I'm coming and going. It's like walking into a prison yard. I think I'll need to to ask them to turn the sensor off. Even if they turn the sensor off the lights will still illuminate a lot of our garden. Light pollution drivers me insane. I would love to sit in the dark in the summer at night but instead both sides have lots of solar lights too.

Years ago, We had neighbours who put up the long loud tuber bells type wind chimes. They were extremely loud in the wind, very near our bedroom window. I couldnt sleep night after night, so I asked the neighbours to take them down. They did, so I took them a bottle of wine as a thank you, and peace offering. Then they put the wind chimes back up after 3 weeks ! I now live in a cottage with no neighbours, and it’s absolute bliss.

people can be incredibly selfish.

My ndn used to have one outside her back door which is opposite my bedroom.
On a windy night the bingbonging drove me mad.
I just had a polite word and asked if she would consider moving it as it was keeping me awake
The minute her husband got home from work it was moved

I have one. It has large metal tubes that create a deep chime. I only put it out in the summer months when the weather is better and there are gentle breezes. If we have a day of bad weather when it's out then I either tie a strap around it or unhook it and put it in the shed. It's a 140ft garden and it's down the end, so from this end you only get a feint, gentle sound.

Weve all got something going on that annoys other neighbours. I have the twat at the end who has frequent bonfires, a house two doors down who plays a radio all day, every day, in the garden (awful station choice) from March to November, another neighbour who has a very barky dog that goes on for ages (she then goes out and screeches at the dog, wonders why it ignores her and screeches for her partner to come help), and a neighbour who has their power tools/lawn mower/jet washer/other noisy device going all the time.

Our neighbour put one up and it drove me mad! They used to go on holiday for six weeks over the summer and I asked if they could take it down while they were away. Neighbour was quite put out, but her husband agreed with me and told her it was “fucking annoying”, so it went down and was never put up again, thank goodness.

I agree with this.

I do have one (if the wind hasn't blown it away) but it's in the garden and I can't hear it from the house and I'm closer to it than any neighbour so can't imagine it bothering anyone.

I live in a city and I am not bothered by any of those things. I am however infuriated by and incessant plinky plonky ‘tinkle’ of a windchime. It’s noise pollution for pollutions sake.

My old neighbour put one up and it almost gave me a panic attack hearing the constant tinkle and that was 2 doors away. I went round to have a word and her teenage son opened the door. I explained and he laughed and said ‘I told her it was bloody annoying, I’ll take it down.’ And they did. You could try that!

I considered my neighbours a lot when I got my selection of wind chimes . I considered how their dog barks 24/7, how they have bbq every time I hang washing out in summer, how their kids squirt me with water guns in summer and how they smoke weed by my conservatory window. After considering all this I got a few extra wind chimes plus an animal deterrent device (they have cats that poo in my garden). They hate both. I just smile and repeat back to them what they always said to me of I ever said anything about the dog/weed etc ‘we can do what we like on our own property’

I don't have any, but I don't mind hearing them. I quite like them.

Perhaps it's similar to the way outdoor cat owners think their neighbour's won't mind having their cat in their garden, or the people with giant leylandii don't worry about the huge shade cast by their "hedge".

I would also say that i don't expect the outdoors to be silent. I live in a community, i expect to hear children playing noisily on a summers day, people occasionally playing music, the kid a few doors down practising an instrument. Im not bothered by neighbours barbecuing either.

When did we all get so intolerant of other people's sounds & smells?

I dont have any but they don't bother me at all, they aren't very loud, and its not a piercing or disruptive sound. I had a next door neighbour who had two for years, I'd occasionally hear them tinkling gently but it was infrequent and inoffensive. I'd prefer a neighbour with 10 windchimes over a neighbour with a dog, every time.

I don't have or want screaming children either.

Can we just generally want people to be considerate of others and not have any of these annoying things?
