Page 2 | If you have a wind chime do you consider your neighbours?

It's windy today. I can hear my neighbour's wind chime. It's not a mellow wooden one, or a light twinkly one, rather it sound tinny and tuneless. I wonder whether people with wind chimes consider whether their neighbours want to hear the noise? If the wind picks up maybe it will blow down and break.

I live next to a house with a bunch of wind chimes, all different types and sounds. I think they’re nice.

Who would actually be bothered by a jingley sound that you can only really hear when you’re stood outside in the wind? Someone with no real problems I guess.

Ah okay, I get it now. So it's either deaf people putting them out or people who do not understand how sound travels. And possibly people fortunate to have huge space between neighbours.

Sound outdoors travels FAR inside everyone's houses. Your immediate neighbours (semi / terraced) can hear everything outside.

I found this thread because there is someone near me who put one up and it's insane. Slightest wind and they make noise - hence the name!! Doesn't matter 'how' windy it is - take them down! So now I will never again experience silence in my front rooms. Oh well. I just blast the TV or music when in those rooms to drown out the noise.

Wind chimes need to be illegal outdoors. Just a pure noise disturbance.

Aren’t they not allowed in built up areas? I’d have to train my cat to catch it, or some of the neighbourhood foxes.

They are straight from hell. I hate them with a passion. Years ago our neighbour put some up. I told them in general conversation that I found them really irritating ( I didn’t directly ask them to take them down). Luckily they removed them… thank god! It beggars belief that people think it’s ok to have that constant noise - it’s as bad as yapping dogs!

They are indeed the devil’s own work. There’s no way I could live in a hippy commune if they had these chimes around. Would send me insane.

I have two (they were given to me as presents, would never have bought one) I make sure they are wedged in the rose bush so they dont make a noise and I put them away in winter

Ha ha I have one that my neighbour gave me as a gift. She has a really nice one and when I told her that I liked hearing it, she got me one too. But we live in a VERY rural area so we are the only people that hear hers and she ours so we're all good!

You both sound like good neighbours.

I thought about what I was going to say while I was out running.

Don't ask.
Don't tell her they are making me murderous and I think she is a self-absorbed whatnot.

Knocked on the door - please can you take your wind chimes down, I find the noise annoying and they are stopping me enjoying my garden.

An update:
I plucked up the courage to speak to the woman. I was anxious that she might just say 'nah.....I like it, your problem', but she didn't.
She's had them for years, but recent tree work has meant the wind has freer access to the darn thing.
Honestly, the things have been driving me to distraction.

I love them but I know lots of people hate them so I don't have any.

My ideal would be for the neighbours to have some so I can hear them but not feel guilty

My husband masking taped our neighbour’s ones together one night 30 years ago-they were hung on their front porch opposite our bedroom window jangling day and night. They disappeared and weren’t replaced.

My friend was getting annoyed with a gobby frog the other day, when she was trying to concentrate on work!

I don’t have windchimes btw.

Of course not. We don't all like or enjoy the same things and we all have different levels of tolerance.

However, there are social expectations, general courtesy and consideration for others.

You said it was a nice noise and I asked whether you thought everyone thought the same. If you are making noise in your garden, I think we should all take a moment to consider whether our neighbours want to hear it.

I think most people are accepting of birds (pet cockerels aside), children playing, lawn mowing. Incessant dog barking, DIY outside of the hours prescribed by the council, music - less so.

I have a gorgeous wooden one that lets out the most lovely soft noise. HOWEVER I live in an ex pat gated community and my immediate neighbours are all expats.. the one side of us is nothing but mango trees..the other side is the identical house to ours..between both ours and next door neighbour..behind is three small 2 bed bungalows. The bungalows are all friends and come 2x a year..once for 2 weeks and once for one week and always seem to arrive within a day of each other.. the house beside us is an american couple that come 4x a year...for 4 days each time . During the time that the homes are occupied I take my wind chimes down. Its just good manners. If I ever have one of my neighbours sell to people that will live here full time.. well bye bye to my wind chimes (unless they are arseholes who blast music or scream all day)

LOL ffs.. I wrote this yesterday and jinxed myself.. our handyman (also our next door neighbours handyman) showed up early this morning..started filling the pool.. and took the cover of their car.. took the car to fill up and came back and washed the car. So bye bye my lovely wind chimes for at least 4 days.. lol. Thats ok.. they are lovely people and even though they party hard , have an outdoor kitchen as well as a big speaker and UGGGH a karaoke machine.. they generally have loud fun only the first couple evenings.. and they turn everything off by 9 or 930 pm. Really cannot complain about them.

I had a couple and hadn't realised quite how annoying they were. They lived in the shed until we moved. Our ndn was very noisy, barking dogs literally from when she went out until she came home. I told her as nicely as i could because the dog sounded so distressed, he barely stopped for breath.
So because I upset her she started banging doors and making as much noise as she could even a council letter didn't stop her so when we moved i hung the chimes back up in the garden behind a locked gate. Hope she enjoyed them. We didn't have any other close neighbours.

No I didn't, it's her garden and she is entitled to have a squeaky swing without my interference.
I moved to another area of the garden....sometimes it's easier to change your own behaviour rather than confront others.
