What is this fresh hell? Menopause

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 05/03/2026 09:23

I woke up at 4am with a huge boil on my labia - it is AGONY. I can't think about anything else, its throbbing and I want to cry!

My mum said "oh yeah, it's menopause" WTF mother?! Why didn't you warn me? (and what good would that possibly have done?)

Is there anything beyond compresses and morphine that can help me?

Fuck menopause, fuck the patriarchy and fuck this fucking boil to hell.

Could it be a Bartholin Cyst? I had one of these a little while ago and I was massive! I just went away on it's own - I obviously gave it a good old squeeze in the manner my GP had told me I absolutely should NOT do in the meantime 😂

AltitudeCheck · 05/03/2026 14:52

I had a Bartholian cyst in my 20s, it got infected and I had to have it drained and some antibiotics... I was on holiday in the US and the trip to urgent care cost over £1k (almost 20 years ago!) I was in so much pain I was willing to pay anything to make it go away! Thankfully insurance covered it but my god I never knew pain like it!

SunnyWednesdayRen · 05/03/2026 14:49

I had one of these and made the mistake of squeezing it. I agree re the menopause.

Muffsies · 05/03/2026 14:33

@ZeldaFighter no medical pictures? That's stupid! You can find pictures of terrible accidents (made the mistake of googling mistakes with angle grinders once, and swiftly decided not to use one). So we can see people with eyeballs and brains hanging out, but you can't look at a fanny with a boil? Just seems wrong.

ZeldaFighter · 05/03/2026 14:20

I had something on the fouffe many years ago. Called the husband over to ask (show) him. He looked horrified so I popped it myself. Went away and didn't come back thankfully (fanny problem, not husband)

Interestingly, just googled Bartholin's cyst. Feel more educated about fannies but surprisingly, after asking the Internet for images of fannies with issues, it only showed me medical diagrams.

I think this is the only health problem I have ever googled without a wealth of real world images.

I actually wanted to educate myself about the difference between fanny spot, fanny boil and fanny cyst and I can't.

LittleMi55Nobody · 05/03/2026 13:58

seriously....A&E for a fanny boil ?...

If there was red swelling and groin glands up, i probably would (minor injuries dept wouldn't deal with it). My DP had an infected boil in his groin and he was sent to have it removed under general anesthetic to stop the infection spreading!

Verv · 05/03/2026 10:13

Could be a bartholin cyst so be careful.

I was thinking that
I had them when pregnant, hideous

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 05/03/2026 14:09

I have a self heating eye mask in my knickers like a sanitary towel. Waddling a bit, but there is some relief! Fucking hell.

Thanks so much for the solidarity. A boil on the fanny is a lonely experience. And an enraging one.
I will brace myself to run the gauntlet known as "getting a GP appointment" tomorrow morning :(

Hot compress! Get a bowl of boiling water in the bathroom, dunk a clean flannel in it, squeeze out and hold to the boil. Repeat several times, and then do the same again every few hours. Gets rid of mine within 24-48 hours every time. The lots of savlon and a plaster once it bursts and drains out. Lots of tissue paper first to ensure all the funk is out and mopped up. The joys of bloody menopause!

@catlife7 @Happyjoe @Nosejobnelly @LittleMi55Nobody

Yes, I am serious. I’m glad you are trying to discern and use your common sense. But maybe, just maybe, you don’t really know everything. Just a thought.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 05/03/2026 14:04

VelvetSabotage · 05/03/2026 12:27

ooooh something I forgot to say is, I bought one of those eye masks you can heat up in the microwave (I think they have rice in them) and sat on it for a while- that was much easier than having to stay in the bath for ages or use a wet hot compress etc

You are a genius and I have nominated you for a Nobel Prize 🙌

Go to A&E if it hasn’t burst.
Someone needs to have a look at it.
Yes, I know, you don’t think it’s THAT bad. Go to A&E anyway.

seriously....A&E for a fanny boil ?...

handsdownthebest · 05/03/2026 13:51

Never had one and don’t think it’s a symptom of menopause, but sympathy nonetheless.
Hope you get treatment sorted soon x

They also don't tell you when it will end.

Age: 62
Gender: Female
Identifies as: Pissed Off. Very Pissed Off.

Oh absolutely… I am frequently in a brain fog, it’s so annoying. I’m always wandering when mine will bugger off!

2 months ago, I cheerfully put premium petrol in our (diesel) car… that’s an expensive mistake by the way - don’t do it! Only been driving 45 years…

This morning I was filling a form in, and turned to the person next to me and said “ how old am I?” For a million pounds, I could not remember how old I was😱

Menopause is a funny thing, you seem to get metaphorical balls, and don’t care what people think of you, and start to stand up for yourself…but on the other hand, I am a complete mush at anything even slightly sad.

Sleep is a distant memory at night, yet I can sleep for ages so blissfully in the day.

mummydoris2006 · 05/03/2026 13:49

I have had a few over the years thanks to diabetes. I don't know if its a placebo effect but I have always placed a piece of bread soaked in hot water over the boil and then a flannel soaked in as hotter water as I can stand. It always brings it to a head and bursts 🤷🏽‍♀️.
My mum told me to do it the first time because of the yeast or something.
Good luck @faithfultoGeorgeMichael and I hope you have a happy birthday and enjoy your spa day 😊

PrettyPickle · 05/03/2026 13:39

Hot bath will bring the boil to a head quicker, or a hot flannel on the boil if you haven't got a bath. DO NOT POP IT. Wear lose clothing and do not use any perfumed products down there.

It is a symptom of menopause for some, as is a blocked follicle or the onset of certain conditions i.e. diabetes possibly? Have you had your bloods checked lately?

Purplebunnie · 05/03/2026 13:39

Bloody agony, you have my sympathies. Can you have a nice warm bath. If it doesn't go on it's own you may need to see your GP

I've had them on and off for years, still get the occasional one and I'm way past the menopause

ImWearingPantaloons · 05/03/2026 13:33

I had one that drove me to tears! Got yourself to your GP practice for some ABs. It’s sometimes easier to get an appt with a prescribing nurse and they’ll be just as good for this.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 05/03/2026 13:30

Well, I am well into menopause and have never had any boils - anywhere.

Why are men responsible for this? Why 'fuck the patriarchy?' Confused

As for someone suggesting go to A & E? What? 😆

What the everliving fuckery.. !?! 🫢

Mine shrunk during pregnancy and pretty much disappeared altogether postpartum. A very upsetting experience all round.

hihelenhi · 05/03/2026 13:14

Oh god, I feel for you. It's the absolute worst. Not usually menopause-related. But you know that now. So, yeah, hair follicle if outer or Bartholin's cyst in 'inner' on one side. You have my utmost sympathy. If a BC, hot compresses/flannel can work at home without GP involvement if you get them early enough but you have to keep super clean and as others have said takes a day or so and is pretty yucky, in what I'd term an "18th century" kind of way. But yeah, you might need antibiotics and be careful if you start getting feverish. Best of luck.

I KNOW right? They reabsorb or something. Evil.

Allisnotlost1 · 05/03/2026 13:10

I sympathise @faithfultoGeorgeMichael I once had this, presume from an infected hair follicle at a time when waxing was much, much higher on my list of priorities. It was agony. I could barely walk. I did go to a walk in clinic and they gave me antibiotics because they could see the start of cellulitis. If there wasn’t one near me and I couldn’t get into the GP I’d see if 111 can get you an appointment.

I used hot flannels and eventually it burst. 💥 The RELIEF! The amount of gunge that came out was incredible. Yuk.

Hope it pops for you soon, solidarity 🤛
