To not understand the toilet seat up/found thing?

Some women seem to get very upset at men who leave the toilet seat up.

He needs it up, I need it down. Why is worse that I have to put it down than he has to put it up? So long as he's using it up and I get a clean seat, why does it matter?

Never thought about it tbh. It’s always down in this house! Just is. And I’ve no idea why all these men seem to be peeing on toilet seats, DP has never done that! 😂

Auroraloves · 27/02/2026 09:30

He needs it down some of the time, you need it down all of the time.

plus it’s more hygienic when flushing to have seat down

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 27/02/2026 09:31

It’s not just ‘the seat’ that’s the issue here…it’s the whole lid/seat combo. Leaving these up is just rude in my opinion. Germs flying everywhere when you flush, plus it’s aesthetically ugly. Nobody wants to see the open toilet!

But the seat being left up by a bloke is just bad manners…if I go to the loo in the middle of the night, I don’t turn on lights as I fumble along in my half awake state. Sitting down onto a piss covered porcelain at 2am is gross! Not only that, you end up half way down the toilet as you slip on it…not great 🥴

Women need it down all the time, men need it down some of the time, so overall it needs to be down more.

Anyway, the lid should be down to flush, so if that isn't happening then it's gross.

Women also, on average, pee more than men.

So let's say a woman needs the seat down for 100% of six visits a day, and a man needs it down for 20% of five visits a day, then it needs to be down for 7/11 visits.

Plus, y'know, it looks nicer.

Count your blessings! I’m a teacher and the boys toilets in schools are UTTERLY disgusting! Not even joking…they stink of pee and the floors/seats are wet with pee from around 10am daily. It’s honestly the worst smell…and my classroom is right next to the boys toilets. All I smell all day is piss.

Tamtim · 27/02/2026 09:35

For crying out loud. Everyone should be putting the lid down so everyone has to lift the lid (and seat for men who stand) and put it down before flushing. Hygiene and all that. Women get upset by men leaving everything their way because so many men are f*ing selfish in many other areas in the home.

OrlandointheWilderness · 27/02/2026 10:43

Oh god @CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich that sounds awful 😂 🤢 I am definitely counting them! We also had my 15 year old DSS and he’s remarkably clean too!

JoB1kenobi · 01/03/2026 00:06

I agree, I was brought with a sister and my dad was very prude and proper - I’m sure he’d have put it down but I don’t remember because it never became a thing and I’m the same now. i don’t care as long as it’s left clean - I’m going to wash my hands anyway!

Sly64 · 31/07/2026 21:55

Bull shit.. have a pee or poo put the lid down beforre you flush.. hahh havong followed wife to toilet many times.. seat down lid up regardless of movement.. does mnot track liar liar pants on fire.. (especially after a vindaloo)

Sahara123 · 31/07/2026 22:01

Yet another thing I barely give any thought to. I don’t really care. And I’m pretty sure I’ve never caught anything from my toothbrush .

SouthernNights59 · 21/02/2026 00:54

And yet those of us who have never in our lives put the lid down to flush are here, alive and super healthy.

Honestly, every year people seem to get more obsessed with this sort of nonsense.

Especially the typical MN clean freaks.

Jandern · 31/07/2026 22:06

I don’t look at air bnbs which have pics of the toilet seat up. I presume someone not very hygienic/tidy is in charge. And yes I know that sounds crazy.

Don't you make me go upstairs and bleach my loo. It's not been done since yesterday morning 😏

CreepyCoupe · 27/02/2026 09:23

In our house, the loo seats and lids are always down when not in use. And the males living in the house sit down to wee. If only I could force male visitors to do the same. 🤨

I’m always surprised when house listings have photos with loo lids up - it looks awful.

Yes it looks awful. And I assume the owner or the agent don’t care, and that would put me off massively.

VictoriaBoson · 01/08/2026 20:43

I have neither seat nor lid.

I like the lower position; and the feeling of cold porcelain on my legs.

Elsvieta · 01/08/2026 21:00

SnowFrogJelly · 21/02/2026 00:55

Another mumsnet myth 🙄

Yeah, there's a gap between bowl and underside of seat so if this terrifying poo misma exists it must be getting forced through there - with greater force, because it's a smaller space.

What I don't get is why seats exist at all - why don't they manufacture the bowls so they widen at the top into something seat-shaped? There would be less cleaning and no up / down problem - and you could even have a seat that would actually form a seal over it.

Bernadinetta · 01/08/2026 21:05

I need to get things out of the kitchen cupboard multiple times throughout the day, so why bother closing the cupboard door? I might as well just leave the cupboard door open all the time.

I see as the same logic as the toilet lid being left up.

It’s almost got to the stage now where any MNer mentioning the H word (hygiene, hygienic) makes me think, ‘Obsessive clean-freak’.

BCBird · 02/08/2026 08:00

It winds me up. I live alone. If anyone visits i expect them to put the seat back down

Men need the seat up to wee. Men need it down to poo.
Women need the seat down for wee, poo, periods.

So for 4 out of 5 functions the seat needs to be down. Therefore the default should be seat down.

Luckily my kids automatically put the seat and lid down to flush the toilet.

Men dont actually "need" the seat up to pee, unless they are careless & prone to poor aim. Its got a big enough hole in it to stand and pee through.

Glendaruel · 02/08/2026 08:06

I get up for a wee in middle of night, my husband doesnt. When half asleep in the dark I dont want to fall down the toilet because he left it up

Doesn’t bother me either way where the lid is. It’s. Couple of seconds to move it.

im more annoyed if someone has left wee on the seat

Astra53 · 03/08/2026 23:04

Seat down at ours. It started when we first got together and added a very nosey kitten to our first home in July 1999. Open loo seat lids and a bleached bowl is not a good kitten combo. The lid was always kept down except when in use, and this has continued to this day. Now on cats 4 and 5

That's not really true. Yes you can aim through the seat but when your stream lands then there's a fine mist from the splashes and that could get on the seat.

If you're standing then seat up.
