Stupid things that annoy you

I know this is probably stupid because I don’t pay the bill, it doesn’t impact on me directly and frankly why is it any of my business… but it really aggravates me when a retail outlet has moved premises or gone out of business but the bloody lights are still on. Surely it’s wasting resources and not brilliant for the environment? Why didn’t the person who was last to lock up flick the switch?! Is there a reason? Does maybe the landlord require the lights to be on for security reasons or something? It really does drive me nuts when I walk past a place that isn’t in use and the lights are on. And breathe… tell me stupid things that annoy you too so that I don’t feel so alone!

In films and TV shows

People carrying handbags that are clearly empty.

People holding coffee cups with a lid that are clearly empty.

This annoys me much more than it should.

Personalised number plates.

People who say 24/7
People who say picky bits.
Banter
Gender reveals.
Bridal showers.
WhatsApp groups - Not family ones.
Reform.
Brexit
People who cut down perfectly healthy trees.

All those

in addition people who say ‘I don’t know the facts but I know what I think’

roadworks going on for months but zero sign of any action

people not flushing public loos ( when they flush perfectly well)

shop assistants busily chatting to themselves at the till when I’m waiting to pay

companies using the tiniest of writing in well hidden ‘conditions’

Louisetopaz21 · 18/02/2026 18:55

People who rub their feet together so you can hear the rubbiness, makes me want to heave, toe nail clippings

ColinOfficeTrolley · 18/02/2026 18:53

This is niche, but the Octopus Energy radio ads, where the play 'members of the public' recorded calls saying things like 'you've really stepped it up as and energy company' and 'i love octopus energy sooooo much I would NEVER dreaaaam of going elsewhere for my energy'

FUCK OFF. NOBODY is talking to their gas/leccy suppliers like that. Do they think we are fucking stupid!!!!

Yes the idea may be for it to stick in my head, but if I hate an advert it makes me NOT buy that thing.

It wasn't directed at you no! Sorry that I didn't make that clear.

If anything was in my mind it was a climate change thread from two years ago that resurfaced today

No worries, I think because of other posts on this thread I wasn’t sure. Sorry, didn’t mean to accuse you at all. Weirdly I had a really similar conversation with friends about a week ago, funny how the same themes come up randomly but in a short period of time isn’t it!

People who allow their children to play iPads or phones on public transport/in restaurants with the volume right up and no headphones. Ditto people who take video calls on public transport/play TikTok or music without headphones. Actually, not a stupid thing to be annoyed about.

LetMeGoogleThat · 18/02/2026 18:49

Incompatible packaging and product design! Washing up liquids, hand creams and scissors in sealed plastic packets.

Nonbio46 · 18/02/2026 18:47

Similar to the op’s annoyance, I have a Red Cross charity shop in my town and whatever the weather through the winter, it always has it’s door wide open and the heaters blasting inside. It’s such a waste of energy. Especially since it’s for a charity. The other thing that gets on my tits is that all the sizes are mixed up yet the colours are put together. 😡

greengreenpink · 18/02/2026 18:45

People saying "park up". WHY? WHY THE "UP"? There is no need. Park will do.
I parked the car. I parked up the car. Waste of time, waste of words, bad grammar. I judge you from behind my annoyance. It annoys me so much.

Fry off is another one. Fry. Just fry.

I knew a revolting bloke years ago who used to speak of having an orgasm as 'come off'.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 18/02/2026 18:43

Old(er) people who have hearing loss and refuse to accept it, or worse still - know and won’t wear the hearing aid. Both my dad and FIL are guilty of this, mum and MIL both use their hearing aids fine so maybe it’s a man thing. My dad is worse than FIL because at least he accepts it, my dad is in total denial and thinks his neighbours are on witch hunt against him when actually no, his TV is insanely loud. It doesn’t really impact me too much, but it is annoying.

Trevordidit · 18/02/2026 18:43

Dogs in shops and cafes/restaurants

People 'hinting' what they want, rather than just asking

Bad parking

AlbieJiggered · 18/02/2026 18:41

people who correct you when you say the wrong pronunciation.
That doesn't bother me unless it's somewhere I know well and they're wrong.
If I'm saying a place name incorrectly I'd prefer to know.

Trevordidit · 18/02/2026 18:41

letmebetheone · 18/02/2026 18:26

People who press the button to cross the road then ignore it and cross without waiting for the lights to change meaning the traffic has to stop for no reason

Guilty, sorry 😞

Luckyingame · 18/02/2026 18:39

People who say "I'm a nice person/neighbour, so.."
No, you really are not. FO.

Qashgal · 18/02/2026 18:35

Tv dramas that rely on text messages on occasion. So that the vital clue is shown on the actual phone screen .Its always fleetingly and , in my case ,15 foot away (if I was actually watching the screen at the time).
Subtitles dont help in this instance.
There are other ways to carry the storyline forward that dont rely on the audience being eagle eyed .

wanderingstarz · 18/02/2026 18:34

Pedants. Annoying AF.

ForEdgyHare · 18/02/2026 18:28

Also when people moan about their DH on mumsnet and loads of people start saying “WHY DID YOU HAVE KIDS WITH THIS MAN” like its not helpful is it. The kids are already in the mix.

Teasandcoffees · 18/02/2026 18:28

People blathering on their phones by speakerphone in public.

Drivers with their stereo up at top volume so all you hear is their bass ...boom, boom, boom etc

ForEdgyHare · 18/02/2026 18:27

Definitely the dogs off leads thing (and I own a dog but I don’t let him be off lead in public spaces or go up to other people or dogs)

also people crossing at the road instead of walking 2 more metres up to the crossing.

people who don’t indicate.
people who correct you when you say the wrong pronunciation.

when the email has my name spelled incorrectly.

when the self scan at tesco needs me to have an attendant check my shopping every single visit.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 loads of things really. It got worse after I turned 40 🙈

AlbieJiggered · 18/02/2026 18:27

Not at all. The 'language evolves' gets used on here quite often to justify poor English.

letmebetheone · 18/02/2026 18:26

Directed at me because of my first post? No kids, can’t have them, so…

It wasn't directed at you no! Sorry that I didn't make that clear.

letmebetheone · 18/02/2026 18:23

People who use the word Super as in 'super strong/super good etc.

People taking about 'being on a journey'.

People who are browsing in shops with their phones on speaker having loud conversations and showing someone at home every item they pick up.

Worried198423 · 18/02/2026 18:21

The word "gosh" it makes who ever uses that word sound about 12.
Trying to cross a busy road when the traffic lights are seconds away

saveforthat · 18/02/2026 18:16
