Stupid things that annoy you

I know this is probably stupid because I don’t pay the bill, it doesn’t impact on me directly and frankly why is it any of my business… but it really aggravates me when a retail outlet has moved premises or gone out of business but the bloody lights are still on. Surely it’s wasting resources and not brilliant for the environment? Why didn’t the person who was last to lock up flick the switch?! Is there a reason? Does maybe the landlord require the lights to be on for security reasons or something? It really does drive me nuts when I walk past a place that isn’t in use and the lights are on. And breathe… tell me stupid things that annoy you too so that I don’t feel so alone!

People who let their dc stand in trolleys..
People who overtake then drop their speed..
People who expect special treatment because they have dc.
People who give toddlers phones in their buggy.

OMFG….kids in trollies….id make that a hanging offence and I’m not kidding!

Not at all. The 'language evolves' gets used on here quite often to justify poor English.

And yet some of us have a Masters in the Evolution of Language and Cognition.

And understand how language has evolved ever since oral history began and that sociolinguistics and changes to structural shifts and grammatical developments actually enable us to converse with and understand the people we live alongside much better. And just because you don't want things to change it doesn't mean they won't. Not all of us want to be small-minded.

And use 'and' to start a sentence!

Maybe my English is poor though? I speak four languages, so I guess perhaps?

Illegally modified e-bikes. On pavements

Monologues

People saying "park up". WHY? WHY THE "UP"? There is no need. Park will do.
I parked the car. I parked up the car. Waste of time, waste of words, bad grammar. I judge you from behind my annoyance. It annoys me so much.

Fry off is another one. Fry. Just fry.

I knew a revolting bloke years ago who used to speak of having an orgasm as 'come off'.

YES! Suddenly everyone uses the phrase ‘change it up’ when ten years ago it was just ‘change’

that, and the fact that everyone these days is oblivious and walking around slowly looking at their phones. Blocking footpaths, blocking stairs, holding up people behind them the whole time. If you are in a central London tube station at rush hour it’s best to assume that people around you have places to be - so please get the hell out of the way! Or I may kick you

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 18/02/2026 21:30

When social media sites randomly show you an ad for, say, a pair of trousers and you click the link that says ‘shop now’ but it takes you to a home page rather than the specific item but even then you’ve to click the accept cookies and then separately confirm whether you want to subscribe for 15% off your first order only to find that the trousers you thought were quite nice are nowhere to be found.

converseandjeans · 18/02/2026 21:18

Toddlers stuck on an iPad when they’re out & about.
People talking on speaker phone in public.
Really dark misshapen eyebrows that seem to be on trend.
Fake grass & people getting rid of all the trees & flowers to put it down.
Not being able to park my small car easily due to so many people having a massive car nowadays.
The overuse of ‘mental health/anxiety’ as an excuse for being a bit flakey. I’d be a terrible counsellor tbh. I’d be telling them to just crack on with whatever it is they need to do.

Probably lots more due to being post-50 & increasingly lacking in patience as I get older.

@Worried198423 ,stay off amumsnet.

Worried198423 · 18/02/2026 21:14

The word "gosh" it makes who ever uses that word sound about 12.
Trying to cross a busy road when the traffic lights are seconds away

🫣😁 I say Gosh a lot at work as I have a public facing role and had to stop saying Fuck!!!

I hate posters who post ‘for the hard of thinking’. Condescending and unnecessary.

Notthisagainyouidiot · 18/02/2026 21:11

A specific to Mumsnet one: on a thread, often benefits or money related, where the response is how do you know/nobody would share that information or similar.
I don't know if it's the fields I've worked in ( hospitality, education, housing) but people voluntarily shared all sorts with me. Not necessarily germane to the professional circumstances or information I needed or in some cases wanted to hear!

AlbieJiggered · 18/02/2026 21:03

@Hiptothisjive , I detest the word literally now.
A small selection from the hundreds of posts containing the word over the last 2 days:
Literally the entire post. HTH
It literally looks like a foot path
This will make literally zero difference to the family court
She literally finishes the post saying "...when he's naughty"
This is literally me ...
The title of your thread literally says...
You literally wrote...
Also no one enters public sector for the money, it is literally the lowest paid sector.
...how they will cook literally an hour after dinner .
Literally no one has been investigated or prosectuted, besides 1 woman.
I’ve literally never seen a baby group or class for 50p.
...she literally parked on someone else’s drive way??
I literally have no idea why my comment is being reviewed, it's so mysterious.
They are literally trying to mug you out of the £11K.
Avoid a bride look? She’s literally the bride!

To be fair, there were some posts where the word was used to mean 'in a literal manner' but they were few and far between.

Hiptothisjive · 18/02/2026 20:50

Hyperbolic language.

And the overuse of the word literally.

ObliviousCoalmine · 18/02/2026 20:46

People who quote the OP needlessly. Particularly in the first sodding reply.

Luvmusic · 18/02/2026 20:44

People who pronounce H as haitch, it's aitch.
Drivers who don't move onto a box junction when their exit is clear.
People who don't put the loo lid down before flushing.

DesignerStars · 18/02/2026 19:55

Websites which force you to set a password that is so complicated you have to note it down somewhere, thus defeating the whole point of having a secret password!

Then entering your password and being told you also need to enter a secret code being sent to you via email. Fine if it’s banking or something needing lots of security but just to pay my bloody water bill?!

Gettingbysomehow · 18/02/2026 19:55

The guy who runs my local shop. Whenever I go in he talks and talks and talks at me to the point I cant leave, its not just me its everyone. Its got so bad I cant go in there and have to drive to the next shop w milrs away which is incredibly inconvenient!!

LyndaSnellsSniff · 18/02/2026 19:52

So many things annoy me. It's exhausting!

My current "favourite" annoyance is badly behaved audiences at the theatre or cinema. It's getting worse and is particularly bad if the actors in the play are well known.

greengreenpink · 18/02/2026 19:29

Front covers of crap magazines << This reminded me of something else that really annoys me.

Full cover back and front adverts for newspapers and magazines that say 'your regular copy is inside'. I don't want to paw past an advert that I deliberately don't read because it annoys me so much. I want to see the headlines or the front cover. It's especially annoying if it's stapled on and I rip it off.

Adverts on little metal signs on little and mini- roundabouts that used to just have flowers and greenery on them . A beautiful little village near me has just done this and it so ugly and intrusive. I don't care how strapped the council are for cash and what they get paid for it, the environmental ugliness means they should be banned. If I was more criminally minded and not afraid of being arrested I would go out in the middle of the night and spray paint over all the adverts in a nice green colour.

Theda13 · 18/02/2026 19:28

My neighbours taking my bins (despite having my address written on them in bold letters.)

People who don’t vote.

My family member, when she says something she has eaten was “orgasmic”. It makes me cringe every single time.

People who brag about their purchases etc. I know one people who bragged about having a new toilet, which allegedly cost around £4k. (For that amount of money, I’d want it to wipe my bum for me.)

motleymop · 18/02/2026 19:26

The Vauxhall Adam. Something about the look of the back of it makes me cross.

ChristmasChroniclesBookFairie · 18/02/2026 19:22

Oh I have a list!

  1. My neighbours - at least 4 of them have ripped out their once lovely front gardens to replace with coloured stones/tacky ornaments (gnomes and ducks) or the cheapest nastiest astro I've ever seen - it quite literally looks like a sheet of flat felt. Their gardens now look awful and are full of weeds - absolutely no effort to remove. Note they are not disabled/unable to do this physically.
  2. Local people who allow their dogs to poo all over the pavements. There are bins everywhere! I live in an area of outstanding natural beauty and it's awful to see it littered with dog poo.
  3. People who don't understand the simple driving concept - if your move forces a person to have to do an emergency stop - DON'T do it.
  4. Front covers of crap magazines - although at times this does amuse me. It's just so ridiculous, "I left my husband for his dad" type nonsense.
  5. Click bait headlines online.
  6. Poor grammar/spelling on customer facing documents/items (menus, brochures, van decals etc)

This is niche, but the Octopus Energy radio ads, where the play 'members of the public' recorded calls saying things like 'you've really stepped it up as and energy company' and 'i love octopus energy sooooo much I would NEVER dreaaaam of going elsewhere for my energy'

FUCK OFF. NOBODY is talking to their gas/leccy suppliers like that. Do they think we are fucking stupid!!!!

Yes the idea may be for it to stick in my head, but if I hate an advert it makes me NOT buy that thing.

This is actually an instance where I do believe they are legit customers. I only really hear the one with the guy saying "you just get it right" and it doesn't sound like he's acting. I still turn the station over though as I've heard it too many times. But those flipping funeral adverts like the one that goes "Dad would have been so pleased with that send off". Piss off. Talk about over acting!

In films and TV shows

People carrying handbags that are clearly empty.

People holding coffee cups with a lid that are clearly empty.

This annoys me much more than it should.

They have the very lightest suitcases going om holiday!
Regarding shops doors open in Winter can I add shops boasting 'We are airconditioned' in Summer but their doors are wide open, making the AC useless.

Leeds157 · 18/02/2026 19:12

Cyclists going through red lights
People who watch their children barge into people and don’t correct them
People who don’t say thank you
Entitled people
New developments that are built on land being used by wildlife and making them homeless
those who will call a no carb meal a healthy meal

I realise some of these are not stupid and so I’ve digressed into listing my general life annoyances 😂
