Stupid things that annoy you

I know this is probably stupid because I don’t pay the bill, it doesn’t impact on me directly and frankly why is it any of my business… but it really aggravates me when a retail outlet has moved premises or gone out of business but the bloody lights are still on. Surely it’s wasting resources and not brilliant for the environment? Why didn’t the person who was last to lock up flick the switch?! Is there a reason? Does maybe the landlord require the lights to be on for security reasons or something? It really does drive me nuts when I walk past a place that isn’t in use and the lights are on. And breathe… tell me stupid things that annoy you too so that I don’t feel so alone!

The off centre number plate on a Land Rover Discovery - I can’t afford one but wouldn’t buy it anyway purely due to the number plate irritating me.

‘We are currently experiencing high levels of calls at this time” … no, you don’t employ enough staff to deal with demand

Oh I have a list!

  1. My neighbours - at least 4 of them have ripped out their once lovely front gardens to replace with coloured stones/tacky ornaments (gnomes and ducks) or the cheapest nastiest astro I've ever seen - it quite literally looks like a sheet of flat felt. Their gardens now look awful and are full of weeds - absolutely no effort to remove. Note they are not disabled/unable to do this physically.
  2. Local people who allow their dogs to poo all over the pavements. There are bins everywhere! I live in an area of outstanding natural beauty and it's awful to see it littered with dog poo.
  3. People who don't understand the simple driving concept - if your move forces a person to have to do an emergency stop - DON'T do it.
  4. Front covers of crap magazines - although at times this does amuse me. It's just so ridiculous, "I left my husband for his dad" type nonsense.
  5. Click bait headlines online.
  6. Poor grammar/spelling on customer facing documents/items (menus, brochures, van decals etc)

I think the simple driving concept in 3) is don't drive so close that someone else's unexpected move makes you do an emergency stop. Other drivers may have all sorts of reasons for suddenly swerving/slowing down. If you leave enough distance and are aware of your surroundings and anticipate, you shouldn't need to do an emergency stop. (Obviously doesn't apply if a child runs out into the road, for example.)

That’s for emergency services or indeed anybody , in case of an accident, not to make a state about procreation abilities of the other people in the car.

If there is a baby on board, it would be evident because of the car seat. And what happens if there's an accident when the baby isn't actually on board? I think the sign is pointless.

Shops that have their doors open in cold weather - especially charity shops. What a waste of heat and money.

CrazyGoatLady · 19/02/2026 05:34

Influencers.

People who have loud conversations on speakerphone on public transport/have their music or TikTok brain rot on without headphones, or let their kids do it.

People who run into you/kids/dogs/other people on the street because they're looking down at their phone.

Parkrunners with massive buggies who have no sense of the space they take up and won't run to the side/keep clipping the heels of people in front of them.

People who don't know the difference between "neurodiverse" and "neurodivergent". I know it's pedantic, but I don't care.

Inconsiderate dog owners who give the responsible ones a bad name. Pick up your dog shit and keep your dog on a lead in public if it doesn't have perfect recall, it's not hard.

Parents who let their kids run up to random dogs and get in their faces and then either get offended when the owner tells them to do one, or freak out if the dog gets excited and jumps up wanting to play. You can't bloody win. If want my dogs to be controlled, you also need to control your damn kids and don't let them barrel over shouting "doggie" and waving their arms like a human bloody windmill.

No, and no

Tv dramas that rely on text messages on occasion. So that the vital clue is shown on the actual phone screen .Its always fleetingly and , in my case ,15 foot away (if I was actually watching the screen at the time).
Subtitles dont help in this instance.
There are other ways to carry the storyline forward that dont rely on the audience being eagle eyed .

Also terrible for blind people.

Apostrophe misuse. Including the ubiquitous I'm in my 40's. Or back in the 80's. FFS, it's not hard.

JohnTheRevelator · 19/02/2026 02:19

People who dawdle then the moment you try to overtake them, speed up.

MaidOfSteel · 19/02/2026 01:31

People who let their little kids run wild in any public place. I’ve almost been floored a few times.
The creeping Americanisation of our language. I hate it.
The state of UK politics over the last 10 or so years. Dire. Seeing politicians trying to take metaphorical chunks out of each other in the Commons is absolutely maddening.

FrozenFebruary · 19/02/2026 01:24

My minor one at the moment is the seemingly sudden overuse of 'both' I first got annoyed by it on Lingo. The host annoys me anyway, but this has not helped!

when did you both meet?

why? Just why?

when did you both get married? (To a married couple)

arghhh

People who take Christmas decorations down on boxing day.
People who are oblivious to there surroundings and walk slowly.
People who undereat and make a performance out of it
People who are tight with money
People who take their dogs everywhere with them
People who crack their knuckles
People who point out spelling errors
People who sneeze more then 3 times in a row
People who pull out in front of you then drive at 20 miles an hour

their surroundings

Sorry!! I had to!😂

The secondary lids on plastic milk bottles

Phone chargers/USB cables that require you to put them in 3 times in 3 different ways before they’ll do their damn jobs

Getting yeeted back into a room you’re trying to leave by catching a sleeve/pocket on a door handle

And holding a drink at the same time!

Lack of critical thinking and taking their information from one source rather than reading around at different viewpoints

People's lack of awareness of others around them and will just stop walking right in front of you.

People who are incapable of reading height signs on flooded ford's and then get stranded in deep water.

Was that in their Range Rover?

some bloke near me did this. He apparently took a wrong turn? Attempted ti drive through the food (that looked more like the Thames!
needed the police & fire service to rescue him. 🙄🙄. I'd love to see his insurers reply to his claim!!

yes it's annoying having hi the long way around to get into the village & yes. Maybe he took a strong turn & found himself at the Ford, but FFS why would you drive your £80,000 Range Rover into it? Dickhead.

People. Myself included. We are such an entitled species and we are so very short-sighted.

ananasfritz · 19/02/2026 00:33

People who chain smoke weed for hours on end and then go directly out in public with the smell still clinging to their clothes and hair so that anyone who gets within six feet of them can smell it.

Jars that are tightly sealed with foil or plastic over the top, but it's a perfect circle exactly the size of the rim with no pull tab, and the material's too thick to poke through with your finger.

BananasAreForever · 19/02/2026 00:12

So many things! Dog owners who are lazy and irresponsible are my biggest one at the moment as it seems to be a more widespread problem compared to 5 years ago.

My local garden centre has done the brave thing of banning dogs inside their store despite the fact they have a dog grooming service (located outside). They will inevitably lose customers, but their argument was that as well as the high cost of damaged items, they were fed up of their employees having to clean up regularly after incontinent dogs.

Recently, in a cafe, a huge German Shepherd jumped up at a nearby toddler and started licking the child's face everywhere. The dog owner just laughed and said something like 'he's a friendly one!' 😕

Chipper28 · 18/02/2026 17:39

People who say they don't vote, watch the news or know what's happening in the world because it's "too depressing." Literally none of my business and they're probably a lot happier and less anxious than I am, but it drives me insane as I think it's the height of ignorance.

Blush

Thats me Blush but not because I find it depressing, it just doesn't interest me.🤷

Incompatible packaging and product design! Washing up liquids, hand creams and scissors in sealed plastic packets.

Especially scissors. I bought some new kitchen scissors the other day to replace the ones that I had mysteriously lost and I needed scissors to liberate them from their packaging! Luckily i keep a pair upstairs for cutting labels off new clothes and opening sachets in the bathroom.

Old(er) people who have hearing loss and refuse to accept it, or worse still - know and won’t wear the hearing aid. Both my dad and FIL are guilty of this, mum and MIL both use their hearing aids fine so maybe it’s a man thing. My dad is worse than FIL because at least he accepts it, my dad is in total denial and thinks his neighbours are on witch hunt against him when actually no, his TV is insanely loud. It doesn’t really impact me too much, but it is annoying.

My Grandma had a hearing aid that she always complained was useless. My Mum had to point out to her it’s because she kept it in the sideboard… 🧐
