Stupid things that annoy you

I know this is probably stupid because I don’t pay the bill, it doesn’t impact on me directly and frankly why is it any of my business… but it really aggravates me when a retail outlet has moved premises or gone out of business but the bloody lights are still on. Surely it’s wasting resources and not brilliant for the environment? Why didn’t the person who was last to lock up flick the switch?! Is there a reason? Does maybe the landlord require the lights to be on for security reasons or something? It really does drive me nuts when I walk past a place that isn’t in use and the lights are on. And breathe… tell me stupid things that annoy you too so that I don’t feel so alone!

Supermarkets and food manufactures changing foods to a new improved recipe and it tasting vile and it then ending up in the bin!
Also going to places to eat or on conferences where the website says we provide a delicious menu with something for everyone and it's cheese, fish or roasted veg - no that's not what I eat, and it's certainly not delicious.
Also ready made sandwiches with mayo/salsa/ sauces I just want a plain simple chicken or ham sandwich thank you.

Not deliberate just poor typing.

People on amumsnet not realising People live other places rather than Britain.
It's Haitch where I am.

Yes, British. Are you Australian? Thanks for pointing it out, and I'll try not to be irritated by it anymore. 😃

@elliejjtiny , That's the sort of thing my mother does although not to the same degree.
I could never tell her I was going for a smear test or something because she'd tell everyone. No filter.

@Didshejustsaythatoutloud , People on here correcting people's spelling
Sometimes there's an autocorrected word that changes the meaning of the post, and telling the poster might mean they get a chance too edit their post.

I assume the ‘too’ in your last sentence is deliberate, @AlbieJiggered.

My dad just insists no one projects their voice properly I used to get that too.
Dad also had 20/20 vision despite having bespectacled offspring and a dented car.

I honestly think my dad's ears shut down because of my mum's incessant waffling about absolute rubbish. That's why he didn't wear his..he wanted to read the Guardian in peace :)

My dad just insists no one projects their voice properly 😭 because of course it’s nothing to do with him. He used to be the same with his glasses until DD asked him if he wanted to come to school for guided reading because she thought he couldn’t read properly.

People who press the button to cross the road then ignore it and cross without waiting for the lights to change meaning the traffic has to stop for no reason

Pelican crossings that take so long for the lights to change that all the traffic has passed and you're left standing there like a lemon if you don't cross the empty road or look like a knob if you cross and then the lights go red just as @letmebetheone drives up to the crossing.

Old(er) people who have hearing loss and refuse to accept it, or worse still - know and won’t wear the hearing aid. Both my dad and FIL are guilty of this, mum and MIL both use their hearing aids fine so maybe it’s a man thing. My dad is worse than FIL because at least he accepts it, my dad is in total denial and thinks his neighbours are on witch hunt against him when actually no, his TV is insanely loud. It doesn’t really impact me too much, but it is annoying.

When an adult writes "You gave me a giggle there OP" or "I hope you don't mind I had a little giggle at what you wrote"
It just sounds so infantile!

Also when people who are already online, take part in any kind of live discussion or forum (MN, Twitter etc) to ask what a word or abbreviation means (or actually anything they could instantly look up). It is just so lazy and helpless.

Same goes for people who comment "I agree" or "I don't know" with no other worthwhile contribution.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 19/02/2026 11:25

People who don't indicate
SNP
My dp leaving an empty milk carton on worktop when the bin is directly beneath
People on here correcting peoples spelling
Shoppers chatting in middle aisle, oblivious to others
Dogs in shops
People who don't reverse into parking space
Parents who get primary age kids mobiles
Tablets strapped to pushchairs for toddlers
I could go on 😂

elliejjtiny · 19/02/2026 11:21

People who talk about other people's medical problems and get the information wrong. Eg my BIL was going for tests so my MIL told the whole family he had cancer (when he didn't want anyone to know he was having tests).

Also, my car steering wheel not being very precisely centered. Makes no difference to how it drives, it's just slightly off.

Could you get it adjusted?

Ponoka7 · 19/02/2026 11:03

Posters who put, Yum at the end, especially if it isn't particularly special food. What do they do, most days, eat food they don't like? Why would you be making food that you don't think is nice?
When a poster wants tips on food/diet/easy, cheap meals and someone puts they make something like, sausage pasta and a poster will put 'sounds lovely, what's the recipe?' Until you know the recipe surely it sounds like something you might be interested in, but at that point you don't even know if it's edible.
Sweetcorn, it can do one.

That’s for emergency services or indeed anybody , in case of an accident, not to make a state about procreation abilities of the other people in the car.

Only on tv shows.

InOverMyHead84 · 19/02/2026 09:52

Mayonnaise in almost every supermarket sandwich. No, i don't want Hoisin Duck wraps today, smoked salmon and creame cheese would be nice.... What's that, it has Mayonnaise in it!? Why ruin otherwise great options with that emulsified oil horror.

An empty property is at risk of being looted/squatted etc so it needs to be protected in some way. If it is just left vacant with no lights on it can be easily targeted. I hope that helps you to stop being annoyed about it!

I doubt the lights being on makes much of a difference

Tv dramas that rely on text messages on occasion. So that the vital clue is shown on the actual phone screen .Its always fleetingly and , in my case ,15 foot away (if I was actually watching the screen at the time).
Subtitles dont help in this instance.
There are other ways to carry the storyline forward that dont rely on the audience being eagle eyed .

Talking of subtitles.
When they don't match with what's being said onscreen.
They miss whole lines of dialogue in subtitles.
It really cannons me,as I depend on the subtitles being accurate.

Also when the mouths don't match the words coming out of their mouths.

See also cafes where people don’t shut the door ( be that staff or customers ) when it’s pissing down and 4 degrees

This. If someone walks into a cafe where I am enjoying a coffee and leaves the door wide open I shout out loudly " shut the door please".

Shops that have their doors open in cold weather - especially charity shops. What a waste of heat and money.

Puddles and mounds of wet leaves

Aggravates" means
to make a problem, injury, or bad situation worse, more serious, or more severe. It also informally means to annoy, bother, or irritate someone. Common examples include actions that aggravate a medical condition, such as exercise aggravating an injury, or noises that aggravate a neighbor.

Being cold.
I get genuinely really angry like a stupid, spoilt toddler.

@ChristmasChroniclesBookFairie p.s. I agree with all the others!
