Is my DS’s tutor being unreasonable

Tutor here. She’s organized her time well beforehand which involves both personal time as well as other students. That’s why cancellations with less than 24/48 hour notice gets fully charged as it’s a massive inconvenience when the student cancels on the day for whatever reason. Yes illness cannot be necessarily known beforehand but imagine this happens 5x a week to a tutor, it makes everything very difficult for the tutor.

I had to cancel a driving lesson this week because I have covid. 140 quid down.. shit happens, but the tutor still needs paid for the time they could have otherwise tutored someone else

Ex-tutor here. YABVU. Just because you have suddenly cancelled doesn’t mean she can suddenly see another Tutee instead. She is running a business. Of course she still needs paying! I had the odd customer who thought like you and ditched them, you clearly don’t value her time!

YABVU. You've agreed to a contract where you can't cancel on the day without paying. The tutor will not be able to fill that slot with paid work so it is quite reasonable. She has generously offered you a weekend slot but you refused.

This poster is probably smiling to herself, states in a nonchalant way the tutor made customers pay upfront because she was having rmto chase you to pay her fir work done. This tutor then bends over backwards to accomadate her even though she has offered another time.

If I was self employed I would sack you off immediately. I would then ensure that any other tutors I know, would be informed that you are a late payer, arrogant with a vile attitude. Just in case you contacted them.
You ate lucky to have this tutor, she is unfortunate to deal with you. You are at best greedy.

Very unreasonable. Standard practice:

you cancel - you still pay (not her fault)
she cancels - you don’t pay (is her fault).

hopefully there’s a contract that says all this?

if this wasn’t the case then people would mess her around and cancel things - she can’t then fill the space with little warning and so loses money.

you’ve already said people didn’t pay on time - including you. So you’ve contributed to her having to change her terms.

She’s running a business. It’s not her fault she’s not working, why should she loose money.

I would expect to pay for the missed session but also for any sessions not taken due to holidays as I would be fuming if my weekly slot was given to somebody else 😬

You are saying she already had to chase you to be paid ànd now you expect her not to ask payment for a lesson yóu annuled at the last moment? You dó know she does this tutoring for a living, right? Not because she's your best friend..

You're unreasonable. You know the terms, stick to them. What you want isn't the same as what you agreed to. Be the adult or bow out of the agreement and find a weaker tutor who will bend to your unreasonable, and obviously childish demands.

I have been in this position, that is to say a a tutor. When someone books for the school year, that day and time is reserved for the whole of the school year. If the student unfortunately falls ill their time, as a tutor money is lost and can’t be replaced. OP your tutor kindly offered another time, that is very generous of them it is not their fault you are otherwise engaged.

Yes, if she cancels she credits you because its her fault. When you cancel she doesnt because its yours.

YABU. This is part of her income, you had a time booked and you are cancelling on the day. Not her problem. You take the hit. Same with swimming or anything else.

I can’t believe that you are complaining about this. Get yourself un busy at the weekend. The Tutor has offered a spot at the weekend. What a generous offer. Seriously check yourself.

When my child was ill and couldn’t make a lesson booked for that day I didn’t wait to be asked, I immediately said “invoice as usual
obviously”.

She offered
you another date. You refused so you need to pay.

If you turned up at work and the building was unavailable, would you expect to be paid? That’s your answer!
