Where do you hide your running away fund

If you have one?

I’m soon going to be working more hours and earning almost double what Dp does. I’m not planning to run away, but I do want to save that money and Dp is hopeless with money and it all gets frittered away somehow.
I want/need to save the money for an important reason-medical tests and help for my ill Dd and then possibly a trip to Disneyland in a year or so. I plan to work very hard for as long as this opportunity presents itself and to save as much as possible.
I’m thinking cash in a larger envelope, but where? My thoughts are in a high up picture frame in Dd’s bedroom, but i’m not sure 🤔

Where do you hide yours, if you even do?

Are you able to do this privately though? What about letters/statements to the house via post?

There are some accounts where any statements etc only appear online.

You might be able to request that any communication is only done via the app or by email.

Why don't you just put any spare cash straight into your pension?

Because I need the premium bond money to be accessible within the next 12 months. I would ideally prefer it in my pension for the long term benefits but circumstances are such that I need a savings buffer available.

Now I am at max holdings any spare winnings or spare cash can go into my pension.

Poddingtonpeace · 19/01/2026 00:02

When I ran, it was not planned. I just had whatever was in my bank account. If things are good, why bother? If things are bad, just go.

If someone needs a running away fine they need to have access. So cash is usually the way they get it together. Not q bank account that is traceable

An envelope stuffed with cash and hidden in the house is discoverable and can be taken. I would argue an online bank account is far safer. Even if it is traced the money can’t just be taken.

Cash in an envelope? Are you 95 years old?

I put mine in premium bonds. I have max holdings so winnings can’t auto reinvest. Any winnings go to top up my pension.

Why don't you just put any spare cash straight into your pension?

Luckyforsome23 · 18/01/2026 23:12

Please don’t hide that sort of cash in your house in case you are burgled or the house burns down or your DP accidentally throws it away or lends it to someone (eg the suitcase idea).

Even if you go for paperless they generally will send some sort of letter eg a pin at the beginning. I would open an account he knows about and then a different one at the same bank.

Noshadelamp · 18/01/2026 22:58

Get an online bank account eg moneybox, mettle, Monzo, revoult etc
Online bank statements are usually by default.

SpiritOfEcstasy · 18/01/2026 22:54

I always keep mattress money 🤷🏼‍♀️ I just do. Not huge amounts - a few thousand - but cash is still King. I keep it under the bottom drawer of my beside cabinet … I don’t have a husband to run away from anymore 😂 but if the Russians arrive I want to know I have some insurance.

Does your company have a dedicated payroll saving scheme? If yes, you can request that they deduct X amount every month from your salary and deposot in the saving scheme. Only you can access these savings and DH will be none the wiser.

Lockdownsceptic · 18/01/2026 22:33

An online account. Always assuming he can’t access your computer.

Somuchsugarinoneday · 17/01/2026 17:14

What is paper free? No letters to the house?

That's correct. Everything is sent by email.

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 18/01/2026 21:41

Mines invested in a risky S&S ISA to make more money. Not planning on running anywhere but I like to have savings in my name.

Givingmytwocents · 18/01/2026 21:28

You can opt for paperless online statements and any communication can go to your email, so there won’t be any post through the door

Chickadee001 · 18/01/2026 20:49

a secret bank account!

But she wants to save money for something of her choosing, he'll just spend it on himself.

Well maybe he did too when he was the higher earner but instead he shared his money with her. She wants to spend the money partly on going to Disneyland, it says so in the OP. Perhaps what she considers him wasting money on is not what he considers a waste of money and vise versa.

HateThese4Leggedbeasts · 18/01/2026 20:33

Bank accounts in the UK are protected-your country may be the same. A cash envelope is easily stolen.

Open an online only savings account and you won't get any physical letters but yes I would tell him you are saving for DD tests but be vague if you must about the amount in it. You can also get some that give you more interest if you don't withdraw anything in a set period.

croydon15 · 18/01/2026 20:18

Yes it's a bit piss take considering that he earned a lot more than you for a number of years and now since you earn more you want to secret it away.

A fairer way would be to put more in the joint pot and save some in your name.

You're not married? Then open a savings account somewhere and deposit the money regularly.

Pay it into a savings account. You can find quite good interest rates on some Internet savings with instant access and no penalty.

PersephonePistol · 18/01/2026 19:53

If you’re squirrelling away cash to “run away”, can I politely suggest your relationship is dead and you might want to end it?

If you don’t, why not save the money in a bank account that’s solely in your name? Nearly everything is / can be done electronically.

Incognito1975 · 18/01/2026 19:49

I agree with having some in cash. If for some reason you split you may have to declare all your accounts. He could get a forensic accountant involved. I've had various small safes in my houses. Someone mentioned a locked drawer at work which could be an option. All the best!

Tuesdayschild50 · 18/01/2026 19:32

Just open another savings account and set it up to be transferred into there.
Don't leave it in the house.
