Irritated by my sister in law since she started Wegovy?

Since going on it she has become utterly smug!!

Every meal is a lecture about portions, willpower and how easy it is if you just decide to be disciplined. She brings it up constantly and watches everyone else eat with a tiny smile. She posts mirror selfies and captions about finally respecting her body. If anyone mentions side effects or cost she waves it away and says excuses are a mindset.

The thing is I am genuinely pleased she feels healthier. I really am. I just cannot cope with the sanctimony. Family dinners are exhausting and I dread comments about my plate. When I gently asked her to stop she said I should be inspired not threatened. I'm not overweight and have never struggled with my weight.

AIBU to think this is insufferable and want some boundaries or should I just swallow it and nod along? I really want to tell her this can't continue and she needs to calm down and stop with the horrid attitude.

Within 3 months she will be back to her previous heavy weight and you will still be the same slim beautiful person you always were.

I really resent shit like this. I am losing weight for my health. I was beautiful - inside and out - when over weight.. So unnecessarily insulting. No wonder people are grabbing the chance to be thinner when people think it's OK to openly insult anyone who doesn't meet some societal imposed beauty standard.

That's interesting. It's only been three months for her so early days. Honestly I think she is just on a high because the weight is falling off with little effort from her. Not sure how she'll adapt when she goes off the drugs and the appetite comes back. I've heard that can be a really intense adjustment.

Yeah, that’ll be the real test. I lost a couple of stone on Mounjaro and after it had worn off I would have quite happily eaten my entire family I was so hungry.

Fi9610 · 11/01/2026 21:17

You could say you’d love to go on the jabs for her willpower but you don’t qualify.

paddleboardingmum · 11/01/2026 21:15

Who has loads of dinners with their sil though? just meet them for coffee instead or a walk or something.

"Yeah, willpower is amazing! That's what the rest of us have been using all these years to maintain a healthy weight, while you were eating like a half-starved Labrador. I'm so glad that there is now this miracle drug for people who don't have the discipline to eat healthily"

Smile sweetly.

This! But only because she's smug and insufferable. I wouldn't say that to a wli user who is not sanctimonious.

Fi9610 · 11/01/2026 21:11

Lots of great suggestions for replies already OP. Nothing to add other than my own experience: I’m carrying a bit of extra weight atm and my cousin (also on the jabs) said “You must be consuming a lot of calories to sustain that.” Without a hint of irony! 😂

Let her. Let people have their moment. You can be busy for awhile and not have to listen to it.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/01/2026 19:07

Mean.

Partly true though. I say partly, as it will be more likely 8-9 months before she regains the weight. Not 18 months.

Zov · 11/01/2026 21:03

Don't worry about it @YourRealTurtle as soon as she stops taking it, the weight will pile back on.

NotThisShitAgain121 · 11/01/2026 21:02

Tell her to shut the fuck or you will not be inviting her over anymore.

JacknDiane · 11/01/2026 19:53

No. I eat whether im hungry or not. I like it too much.

You eat when you are not hungry? I can understand chocolate etc but food like a dinner or sandwiches or toast when you are not hungry? I believe you I just can’t imagine doing it, I wouldn’t get the point of it.

I’d be tempted to say that you’re glad the Wegovy has finally given her the chance to experience food the way you do naturally, and that it takes real courage to admit that you need help to control your appetite. You can’t imagine how hard it’s been for her until now, but good on her for getting help. And then smile sweetly.

And I say this as a card-carrying lard arse who would love to be able to afford the injections and wishes that she had an easy way to get her weight down to something sensible.

Please, pretty please, say this to her.

ResusciAnnie · 11/01/2026 20:40

how easy it is if you just decide to be disciplined

?? but she hasnt just decided to be disciplined if she’s on wegovy. I’m on WLI because you cant just decide, it doesn’t work like that.

ANGIEPANGY77 · 11/01/2026 20:37

This right here. Please, pretty please, say this to her verbatim.

DarkForces · 11/01/2026 20:25

Is triggered the latest insult to shut people up? Pointing out you are citing information that's bloody obvious and is something most people have considered from the start of taking injections as they've already failed at numerous diets is hardly triggered. More bored of people asking about it as if it's a revelation.

And yes, 'fat shaming' people you disapprove of is mean.

Touched a nerve, I see. Oh well. What's "bloody obvious" to you might not be for everyone else. Come down off your high horse sometime!

BruFord · 11/01/2026 20:33

I’d be tempted to say let’s change the subject, it’s boring talking about food all the time. Any holiday plans this year, SIL?

Deliberately change the subject and I bet everyone else will be relieved and start talking about anything but food.

AngelinaFibres · 11/01/2026 20:31

YourRealTurtle · 11/01/2026 18:07

I think I'll have to. She was absolutely insufferable during Sunday lunch - I felt the eyes on me as I reached for a second serving of roasted potatoes!!

She isn't using self discipline, she's taking a drug that stops you wanting to eat. If she wasn't on it she'd stay fat .

TroysMammy · 11/01/2026 20:31

If she had will power she could have lost weight without fat jabs. If she knows about portion control and discipline why did she go down the fat jab route? She's a sanctimonious twat.

Uhghg · 11/01/2026 20:30

Squirrelchops1 · 11/01/2026 20:16

I hear you....that's a good example of 'food noise'. I'm on mounjaro and I'm now the annoying fucker who forgets to eat and doesn't really look forward to food....maybe once a week as the jab has worn off. It's a bit shit really.

Can you not go down a dose?

I’d hate this, food is meant to be enjoyed and you’re meant to look forward to your meals.

Long term, I’m not sure how this would help with weight loss/maintenance.
If you follow any health or fitness people you will see that what they eat it is a big part of their day and that’s completely normal (and healthy), they would never skip meals or not enjoy eating.

WhateverMate · 11/01/2026 20:28

You need to stop being so gentle with anyone who has the manners of a pig and the intelligence of a gnat.

"Eyes on your own plate SIL. I'm sick to death of your boring food/diet talk".

Incidentally, I hope there are no kids present while she's enlightening you all with her talk of disordered eating?

Uhghg · 11/01/2026 20:26

MeinKraft · 11/01/2026 20:03

I tried Mounjaro and it was a hellish month on it. I don’t know if it would have calmed down if i’d stayed on it but I was completely obsessed with what i was and wasn’t eating and felt really down. Yes my appetite left me but mentally i struggled hugely with what a mindfuck it all was. i was only at the entry dose though.

Definitely do not go on it if you feel like this.

Its meant to reduce the guilt associated with food.

Yes you still have to be conscious about what you’re putting in your body but you’re supposed to enjoy eating good food.

That sounds like an ED waiting to happen.

MySweetGeorgina · 11/01/2026 20:25

Why do you have to be sensitive to her feelings and you have to tip your around and say things gently?!

don’t be such a doormat, gosh I would literally challenge or mock any family member or friend (gently or maybe not gently 😁) if they were being a sanctimonious twat

are you scared of her? how do others react? can you not just laugh at her? she is being silly after all

DarkForces · 11/01/2026 20:25

IslaNotFisher · 11/01/2026 20:21

I was correcting the person I quoted who said stating facts was "mean". You sound triggered.

travailtotravel · 11/01/2026 20:23

Just wait until.she stops taking it and it all piles on again.
