Why do none of my in-laws wash their hands

Need a rant to be honest. Actually sick of their lack of hygiene.

They’ve only arrived today and it’s making my skin crawl. I’ve gone to bed for an early night and I’ve just heard my fil going to the toilet, not flush or wash his hands. A few minutes later, mil comes up. She flushes at least but also, very definitely, does not wash her hands! The toilet is a small toilet along our upstairs landing (separate from a bathroom) and you can hear the tap being turned on very clearly.

We had chicken wraps for dinner, all putting their fingers in the sodding salad. Fil currently has a cold.

Debating whether to say something to my husband but there’s a huge backstory whereby he feels like I’m constantly criticising them, so probably best to keep my mouth shut. I might just passive aggressively repeatedly remind the kids to wash their hands tomorrow.

If i wee in my own home, i wipe with decent chunk of loo roll. There is absolutely no part of my hand that touches wee/skin/the loo bowl or seat etc. If i constantly wash my hands the skin gets dry & sore so i don't.

I always wash before preparing food etc & if i have a poo.

I get more germs from holding the pole on a train carriage than wiping a wee.

This Thread exactly reminds me why I know that the minority of general public are revolting! Now at supermarkets in my area all chilled items are behind a door to the chilled cabinet… so not only do I have to touch where every other piddle, poo and norovirus fingers have had their hands it’s then all over the items that get taken into our home and fridge!!

for those of you who don’t believe in washing your hands… there are enough particles in a pinhead sized droplet of norovirus to infect 100,00 people… just let that sink in next time you’re eating with your unwashed hands

I'm 45 years old and I have never had norovirus. I always wash my hands when I arrive home from anywhere, and before I prepare food but not after a wee in my own house. Funnily enough there are a few people I work with who are constantly at the antibac hand gel and they get ill a lot more frequently than I do.

Justify it 😂 you know complete strangers don’t actually have to justify their behaviour to you don’t you?

Not to me, you fool, to yourself.

Now wash your hands 😂

Well we are very rarely ill and why would my hand be touching my vulva when im using toilet roll. I'm really questioning how you lot wipe yourselves after using the toilet no wonder you all need to wash your hands

I take a few sheets of paper, usually two, and fold them to the size of one sheet, but thicker. I then put them between my legs, hold my flap open with my free thumb, and then wipe my inner labia. Otherwise you’re just drying the top layer. The fingers on the edges will definitely make fanny contact.

So when you go for your 3am wee and you're desperately trying to stay asleep do you really wash your hands in the dark

Yes!

Itsmetheflamingo · 31/12/2025 09:28

honeylulu · 31/12/2025 09:26

You are presumably touching the flush that has previously been touched by someone who has wiped their arse.

Yes, this exactly. How can you justify it? How can you bear to walk out of the bathroom with faecal particles/germs on your hands, bleurgh. It's so easy to have a quick hand wash.

In other news, I've never dried cups on my tits, albeit it seems less objectionable particularly if your top is clean (perhaps not if you've worn it while pooing and flushed with the lid up but I digress ...). It has honestly never occurred to me. I have tea towels next to the sink. Maybe that's terribly quaint these days.

But i wash my hands on my period after a poo before preparing food, before eating, after being outside, after touching animals, the 50 thousand times I wash pots a day, after doing arts and crafts with the kids. Plus a shower or bath daily the reality is i probably wash my hands more then half the people on this thread who think im disgusting

I’m genuinely curious, why then are you so resistant to doing it after a wee if handwashing is such a habit of yours?

CalzoneOnLegs · 31/12/2025 09:12

@Maestoso agree. The manky mitts on these type of threads ALWAYS say the same things, ‘I’m never il’, ‘we need germs’, etc, however, Its a first to hear someone confessing to fingering a mans butthole and sounding proud of it 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 that is totally sick and a health hazard
it makes me want to wear blue gloves when out in public 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

You said this "I only wash my hands after a wee in public places not in my own home". So, a non-washer after using the loo.

And then you said "Everyone in my household has been inside me one way or another i don't think they are worried about my germs its family" as a reason for not washing your hands after the loo, that's as batshit as it gets. I hope you all enjoy your dysentery. Together. As a family.

You are presumably touching the flush that has previously been touched by someone who has wiped their arse. Ditto on the toilet roll.

And how can anyone dry themselves without coming into contact with their own vulva. What do you use, a toilet brush and a pair of salad tongs?

Not washing your hands after using the loo is utter skank behaviour. You’re just as likely to get ill from E-Coli you catch from your own child as from a stranger. “They’re my family’s germs” makes no sense at all. It’s like saying you don’t need to wear a seatbelt in your husband’s car!

I’m on holiday with DH. We’ve been away three weeks and it’s the longest I have ever spent in his company. I have learned his hand washing standards are woeful. We are in South America so I think we should be extra careful with hygiene etc but he just rinses his hands under the cold tap for a couple of seconds after using the loo then will make me a sandwich! I’m so unimpressed. I guess it’s just people’s habits and it’s their choice but I also find it grim.

GreywackeJ · 31/12/2025 08:39

This thread is hilarious.

It’s second nature to me to give my hands a cursory wash after every loo visit, but I have no idea if guests do. And I don’t care tbh.

Some posters seem very obsessed about illnesses. We’ve never had a stomach bug that’s gone around our family. I care more about all the visiting men that stand up to piss and get splashes everywhere. Now that’s minging.

Funnywonder · 31/12/2025 08:33

SouthernNights59 · 31/12/2025 06:02

Yes, why is it? I don't wash my hands after a pee in my own home, and I am rarely ever ill. What do you think is going to happen?

You might make someone else sick?

I make my own yoghurt. A couple of days ago, I opened the yoghurt flask and the entire surface was covered in a pink liquid, which I’m reliably informed is mould, ie dangerous bacteria. One of the utensils I used must have had a microscopic speck of something on it. The wooden spoon probably. I have always been pretty scrupulous about hygiene, but this didn’t half give me a visual on how bacteria multiply. Obviously the yoghurt was kept at a warm temperature, but all that does is accelerate the process.

Why would my hands be dirty after having a wee i don't wee on my hands.

Someone will probably have flushed your toilet using the hand that they have just used to wipe their bum after a poo and when you flush after a wee, you could pick up some poo germs that you would transfer to the rest of the house as you didn't wash your hands.

StarlightLady · 31/12/2025 07:12

thepariscrimefiles · 31/12/2025 06:59

No-one needs toilet germs though. If never washing your hands after pooing or weeing helped build resistance to germs, why are people in countries with no access to toilets and proper sanitation dying of preventable diseases?

Poor or no hand washing after using the toilet significantly increases the risk of contracting and spreading serious infections.

This.

ln addition not only does washing hands after each loo visit guarantee good toilet hygiene, it ensures regular hand washing. Have so many people forgotten the pandamic?

Bones75 · 31/12/2025 07:11

I can't get over the people on this thread who don't see this as an issue. It is disgusting not to wash your hands after using the loo.

youalright · 31/12/2025 07:09

Washing hands with soap and water saves lives. Imagine surgeons not scrubbing in.

All you "I don't wash my hands but I'm not a filthy fucker" you absolutely are, fucking gross.mingers

Washing hands with soap and water is first level prevention of disease spread. Some idiot saying "all the people in my house have been in my body at some time ..." Have they not washed since?

Soap and water is BASIC hygiene that's rolled out from first to third world countries. And so many here ignoring it because they think they're above it. If anyone learned anything in lockdown it should've been hand washing.

If you don't wash your hands after the loo, why wash them before cooking? There's no point. You already left shit over everything you touched so if you wash your hands to cook and touch what you touched after not washing them you just picked that shit up again.

No reason to call me an idiot

beigeybeige · 31/12/2025 07:07

I’ve noticed this not washing hands can go with some abnormally high and fixed self opinion, whereby the non washer feels they are fine so everything they want to do (including not washing hands) is fine.
this won’t change sorry. Hope they are kind and nice in other ways.
