Why do none of my in-laws wash their hands

Need a rant to be honest. Actually sick of their lack of hygiene.

They’ve only arrived today and it’s making my skin crawl. I’ve gone to bed for an early night and I’ve just heard my fil going to the toilet, not flush or wash his hands. A few minutes later, mil comes up. She flushes at least but also, very definitely, does not wash her hands! The toilet is a small toilet along our upstairs landing (separate from a bathroom) and you can hear the tap being turned on very clearly.

We had chicken wraps for dinner, all putting their fingers in the sodding salad. Fil currently has a cold.

Debating whether to say something to my husband but there’s a huge backstory whereby he feels like I’m constantly criticising them, so probably best to keep my mouth shut. I might just passive aggressively repeatedly remind the kids to wash their hands tomorrow.

Does your husband rush off to wash his hands if he actually touches your bits during sex?

Hand washing is going to happen at some point surely? You don’t have to ‘rush off’. How ridiculous. But neither do you ‘wander off’ to, say, get your kids ready for school or work on your laptop or make coffee. You generally wash your hands first. Don’t you? Oh God, I hope so🤣

Petitchat · 31/12/2025 11:38

We are so lucky to have flushing toilets, running hot water, soap and clean towels.
I wish people would appreciate this.

In third world countries, many of the deaths are caused by lack of sanitary conditions besides lack of food.

Good point, how do germaphobes have sex?

I have frequent and regular sex since my mid teens and still manage to wash my hands when l go for a wee.

CoolPlayer · 31/12/2025 11:33

I would hate this so I feel for you. I get some people don’t want to wash hands too often but washing hands after going to the loo is just standard isn’t it?

We wash our hands afterwards. Doesn’t everyone?

I’m genuinely curious, why then are you so resistant to doing it after a wee if handwashing is such a habit of yours?

Because i don't think its necessary after a wee in my own home. You can over wash your hands. I do it enough during the day without doing it for a quick wee

Allmarbleslost · 31/12/2025 09:41

I'm 45 years old and I have never had norovirus. I always wash my hands when I arrive home from anywhere, and before I prepare food but not after a wee in my own house. Funnily enough there are a few people I work with who are constantly at the antibac hand gel and they get ill a lot more frequently than I do.

Same I've never had norovirus neither has anyone in my family. Yet one of my friends who is always washing her hands and using anti bac is always ill

But toilet tissue is pretty thin and without going into too much info here, there can be times when your hand can come into contact with your bits when wiping…..

Totallybannanas · 31/12/2025 10:43

And this is why I hate eating out 😭

Yeah i read it but i don't believe you. You made a point about how it takes less then 10 seconds to wash your hands i pointed out that you need to be washing them for a minimum of 20 seconds at a time you then suddenly said oh no thats only sometimes in the middle of the night. Its ok I'm not judging. Welcome to the gross side 🤣

It's OK, I'm not judging you, I'm just calling a complete stranger a liar.

Are they grabbing the salad with bare hands? We use salad tongs in this house...

Yep, OP said they had their fingers in the salad!

Sahara123 · 31/12/2025 10:21

youalright · 30/12/2025 23:01

Then you're not washing them properly it should be a minimum of 20 seconds. I may not be washing them as often as you but I am washing them properly when I do

I was just thinking this, a 10 second hand wash does nothing germ wise, plus you need hot water and mine takes that long until it runs hot .

I take a few sheets of paper, usually two, and fold them to the size of one sheet, but thicker. I then put them between my legs, hold my flap open with my free thumb, and then wipe my inner labia. Otherwise you’re just drying the top layer. The fingers on the edges will definitely make fanny contact.

This is the weirdest way of wiping after peeing I can even imagine, let alone been told of someone practising 😭

BettysRoasties · 31/12/2025 10:16

You might have to start reminding them before dinner like children.

”Dinner in 10 everyone go wash their hands ready”

Gross. Weirdly the one place I don’t wash my hands is the public toilet I use hand sanitizer there as I don’t want to touch the dirty tap to tie it off after washing my hands and then the likely dirty door handle. Though mainly I use a public toilet maybe 5 times a year tops luckily.

She also said she's had her finger up her husband's arse but I may've dreamt that

Edited

I am thinking maybe I dreamt that too, because it’s too disgusting to be true - twiglet finger 🤮🤮🤮

See i think this is gross & unecessary!

Two sheets of loo roll isn't enough. I would use at least 4-5 and i use them to properly wipe between and absorb. I can easily feel if there's moisture left.

I can't see why your method is necessary unless you've got oddly large/closed labia that get in the way a lot, which isn't typical.

I have large, closed labia. They're not "odd" thanks. They come in all shapes and sizes, just like noses, breasts and penises.

CalzoneOnLegs · 31/12/2025 10:05

@KitsyWitsy yes OP has said they put bare hands in her salad.

I'm dying to know what your day job is!

My job is very boring to most…think data science/analytics.

Maestoso · 31/12/2025 08:06

You said this "I only wash my hands after a wee in public places not in my own home". So, a non-washer after using the loo.

And then you said "Everyone in my household has been inside me one way or another i don't think they are worried about my germs its family" as a reason for not washing your hands after the loo, that's as batshit as it gets. I hope you all enjoy your dysentery. Together. As a family.

She also said she's had her finger up her husband's arse but I may've dreamt that

Dirty hands in the salad. Grimsville 🦠😬

Peridoteage · 31/12/2025 09:54

If you are getting faecal particles on your hands through contact with the skin etc when wiping, you need to learn how to wipe properly.

If you think the faecal particles are airborne and are reaching the skin that way, they could landing on your skin after washing and not just before.

Why are people so germphobic? Yes, washing before eating & cooking etc are a good idea but some people are clearly constantly scrubbing all the healthy bacteria off their skin. You will get ill more regularly if you do that. We have not evolved to be sterile, we live in symbiosis with millions of bacteria that we need.

Tink3rbell30 · 31/12/2025 09:52

So even after having it explained multiple times that choosing not to wash hands after using the toilet that you would get faceal matter bacteria on hands from touching the flush and lid then spreading that all over the house, people are still refusing to wash their hands? 🤢 are these people proud of being disgusting and lacking personal hygiene?
