Why do none of my in-laws wash their hands

Need a rant to be honest. Actually sick of their lack of hygiene.

They’ve only arrived today and it’s making my skin crawl. I’ve gone to bed for an early night and I’ve just heard my fil going to the toilet, not flush or wash his hands. A few minutes later, mil comes up. She flushes at least but also, very definitely, does not wash her hands! The toilet is a small toilet along our upstairs landing (separate from a bathroom) and you can hear the tap being turned on very clearly.

We had chicken wraps for dinner, all putting their fingers in the sodding salad. Fil currently has a cold.

Debating whether to say something to my husband but there’s a huge backstory whereby he feels like I’m constantly criticising them, so probably best to keep my mouth shut. I might just passive aggressively repeatedly remind the kids to wash their hands tomorrow.

Well the last bit of wee definitely dribbles down towards the vaginal opening, that’s not gravity-defying. It literally is gravity! Why do you bother wiping at all if the urine doesn’t get anywhere else?

I pat my urethra dry after urinating.

I have this sign in my downstairs loo to help remind guests.

Love it ❤️.

I think it is a bit odd that you’re getting urine all over- and indeed inside- your labia though. Seems to defy the laws of gravity.

Tell that to op who started this she doesn't wash her hands properly during the night

No.

You asked the question and I replied to you. Most of us are not feral and follow basic hygiene standards that even third world countries try to follow if they have running water.

Well if you look at public health advice about when you should wash your hands, ‘after using the toilet’ is at the very top of the list. So it seems to me that I’m not the outlier here.

Just a message of solidarity. I’m in the same boat. In laws are gross. No hand wash in the bathroom, only occasionally a towel. Limited cleaning (none most of the time), we used to be expected to sleep in effectively a dirty bed when we stayed over as they just kept the same sheets on without washing them between guests visiting. They don’t shower when we are there. I have to ask for hot water to be turned on to shower and bath is dusty. Let’s just say I absolutely hate it!! And wash everything when I get home.

As someone who always washes her hands after a wee, l don’t see anything wrong or abhorrent about that providing she washes her hands afterwards.

God no we will have to disagree on that one I’m afraid !

Mrsclausemunchingonamincepie · 31/12/2025 14:00

So fil is hugging your dc /touching your soft furnishings with dick hands? Fucking grim.

CalzoneOnLegs · 31/12/2025 13:58

youalright · 31/12/2025 13:33

It wasn't clear as you are saying its impossible for anyone to wash dishes as the water needs to be to hot to put hands in. How do you think people without dishwashers manage we don't just throw cups and plates after we have used them

I did not say it was ‘ impossible ‘ did I ?

I have managed to get to almost 40 without touching my vagina or urine when going for a wee. I honestly don't know why you are finding this so challenging no wonder you wash your hands after weeing if this is something you struggle with

Jaxhog · 31/12/2025 13:56

Not flushing at night is one thing - provided its just pee and you shut the lid after. But not washing your hands - yuck!
I'd get a large 'now wash your hands' notice for the toilet door, and draw their attention to it.

youalright · 31/12/2025 13:51

I have never said that read the thread 🙄

It doesn’t matter how many times anyone washes their hands, it’s when you wash your hands and you still seem to think it’s unnecessary to wash your hands after a wee.

youalright · 31/12/2025 13:55

Nevermind17 · 31/12/2025 13:44

Because unless you wrap half a roll of toilet paper around your hand, there’s a chance that you are going to come into contact with your vagina while wiping. I’d rather risk skimming a finger over my bits and then wash my hands than get through 32 toilet rolls a week. Why are you so scared of touching your vagina?

So you wash your hands for practically everything else, risking drying them out and killing good bacteria, but don’t wash after a wee …

I wash my hands when I see necessary after a wee I don't. Before food I do. After being outside I do and after touching animals I do. I also happen to wash my hands more as we don't have a dishwasher

youalright · 31/12/2025 13:51

Maggiethecat · 31/12/2025 13:48

That’s irrelevant. You may as well say that because you wash your hands a gazillion times a day you don’t need to after a poo.

Because constantly washing your hands dries them out and kills good bacteria. I can't say ive noticed everyone around me getting ill. Like i said previously I probably wash my hands more then half the posters on here but thats not necessarily a good thing

I never said there is anything wrong with touching your vagina im asking why you are doing it when going for a wee. Obviously if you're someone who randomly starts masterbating everytime you go for a wee then absolutely wash your hands but I dont. You're all batshit

Batshit is trying to rationalise not washing your hands after a wee.

Seriously, it sounds your hands are more in water than out and that a few extra washes after wees is not going to do any more harm.
Even if you’re generally well, consider people who might visit and be subject to your contamination.
I suppose your rebuttal will be that you’re practically a hermit and no one is at risk.
