Labour Voters. Honest question

Tryingtodobetter82 · 29/12/2025 23:46

I’m not looking to start an argument on this subject. I know it’s a very heated and emotive topic.

I have strong views on political issues. What with algorithms and biased news organisations, it’s very easy to end up only seeing information that confirms what we already believe. Because of that, you don’t often hear the other side of the political divide.

I’m honestly curious whether those who voted Labour at the last General Election, for reference I did not, would vote the same way if there were an early GE in January, purely hypothetical of course.

If so, I’d really appreciate you sharing what you feel they’ve done right so far in their term. I’m asking as I genuinely want to understand different perspectives.

YABU - I would vote labour again
YANBU - I wouldn’t vote for them again (or ever have)

After the election I spent ages watching PMQs when Starmer was in opposition. He kept on framing and talking like the Tories were all useless idiots and that labour were all well behaved and had all the answers.

I’m sure Starmer and co thought they’d be doing better than they are rn

After hearing all about the evils of Tory austerity, I thought Starmer would magically fix public services. I was wrong.

Oh come on. It will take years to fix what the Tories destroyed. Maybe Labour could manage some significant progress after two terms, but of course a second term is now looking very doubtful.

I am sure the spiv will fix everything overnight if he gets in, though. We will all be able to walk down the street wearing watches, which we can't do at the moment.

I’m looking forward to 2026. End of Starmer. Beginning of the end for Labour. Happy New Year!

We should be careful what we wish for there. Obviously Starmer is terrible, a human bollard if ever there was. However a replacement could be even worse. A far left loon is a terrifying thought.

TheRishi · 01/01/2026 09:27

I wish we had more grammar schools. All my DC went to a state grammar school, all received a fabulous education.

CatkinToadflax · 01/01/2026 08:40

In the past I’ve been a ‘floating voter’. I didn’t vote either Labour or Tory last time around and I don’t see myself voting for either ever again. I align most closely to Lib Dem but frankly they’re useless at the moment.

The intended improvements to state education being funded by VAT on private school fees seems to have gone noticeably quiet, as have the gleeful posters shouting ‘bravo!” since Labour quietly muttered that the funds raised are being used for affordable housing instead. The Tories properly ballsed up state education and Labour doesn’t seem to have any plans to improve it.

One thing I will say is that our ‘new’ Labour MP is brilliant. If I could vote specifically for her without the party coming with her then I would. She really really cares about the local community and represents us well. The previous two Tory MPs - one of whom was a former Home Secretary - were utterly useless. They rarely ever visited the town and didn’t seem to give a damn. We’re lucky with who we’ve got now.

So, what has starmer achieved up to now.
In no particular order:
Given billions away to the Chagos Islands
Given our fishing rights away
Fucked over the private school system.
Fucked over private business enterprise
Reneged on his "no tax rise" policies
Fucked over the pensioners and disabled then U turned.
Made working for a living pretty much pointless by giving huge UC rises
Fucked over the farmers.
Gave train drivers a big rise with no conditions attached
Conspired with Merseyside police to cover up the Southport stabbing perpetrators identity.
Jailed those who made their feelings clear over the whole fiasco.
Hasn't smashed the gangs. In fact more and more arriving almost every day.
And finally.... the cherry on the cake (drum roll) made it his top priority as UK premier to allow in aan anti semitic jihad supporter who openly Hates Britain, white people and Jews, and declared how delighted he was to accommodate him Ta-daaaaa!!!!

This is closer to how the majority feel than the glowing posts.

They have been disappointing ☹️

Hope it passes as quickly and merrily as the last Tory run Parliamentary term (with its blur of 3 prime ministers) did for me!

At least in less than an hour it’s 2026, and Labour being gone in 2029 doesn’t seem quite so far away.

Thinking the same….not so long.

TheRishi · 31/12/2025 23:33

National Living Wage, personal tax allowance increase, automatic pension enrollment. They increased the hours for funded childcare. Sugar tax was good.

Furlough was good, vaccine rollout was very fast.

Ah we'll see. A while yet till 2029. Happy new year under our Labour government in the meantime! Wonder if Nige is in Clacton.

Does it matter?

Does it matter if they posted this thread in good faith? I think it does but it clearly won't bother the OP

Your question is moot. The British vote as the media instructs them when the time comes. We are in a cycle of the country being bled dry beyond re-electability every three parliaments. However it is already obvious the current government is intended as a placeholder between cycles. There will be no second term.

Honestly a lot. Legalised gay marriage. Expansion of our renewable energy portfolio, quickest decarbonisation and air quality improvements. I'm a proud Tory. Will never vote labour.

Those are indeed the good things they did, I can't think of much else either

Conservatives are no long committed to the renewable energy portfolio.

peacefulpeach · 31/12/2025 22:34

? I like Sunak. He’d have been an excellent PM for a long time, if he hadn’t been handed a dud tenure.

Think people got mixed up in the quote replies

I recognise that you may dislike Sunak because he was wealthy and had married into a wealthy family. However his wife as an Indian national was legally entitled to apply for non dom tax treatment for the income she received from her father's Indian based company.

I equally think that Starmer is a good decent person but he is out of his depth as PM and to be fair to him acknowledges this. Of the two Sunak is by far the smarter one.

Liz Truss on the other hand was massively out of her depth and not fit to run a Government Department let alone the country. What made it worse was that she actually thought and still thinks she has the capability when she was by far the worst PM in living history.

Johnson was actually smarter than the appearance he gave. However he wanted to become PM more than he wanted to actually do the job and quickly became either disinterested or didn't want to put in the considerable effort required to do the job.

Tories made some mistakes but also did a lot of good

I’d love to know what good you think they did.

Papyrophile · 31/12/2025 22:27

Not my monkeys, and I'm a long way off being an organ grinder... I think Labour is good enough at digging their own holes. Even so, I think highly of Wes Streeting and Shabana Mahmood; clever, and principled.
