Labour Voters. Honest question

Tryingtodobetter82 · 29/12/2025 23:46

I’m not looking to start an argument on this subject. I know it’s a very heated and emotive topic.

I have strong views on political issues. What with algorithms and biased news organisations, it’s very easy to end up only seeing information that confirms what we already believe. Because of that, you don’t often hear the other side of the political divide.

I’m honestly curious whether those who voted Labour at the last General Election, for reference I did not, would vote the same way if there were an early GE in January, purely hypothetical of course.

If so, I’d really appreciate you sharing what you feel they’ve done right so far in their term. I’m asking as I genuinely want to understand different perspectives.

YABU - I would vote labour again
YANBU - I wouldn’t vote for them again (or ever have)

So, what has starmer achieved up to now.
In no particular order:
Given billions away to the Chagos Islands
Given our fishing rights away
Fucked over the private school system.
Fucked over private business enterprise
Reneged on his "no tax rise" policies
Fucked over the pensioners and disabled then U turned.
Made working for a living pretty much pointless by giving huge UC rises
Fucked over the farmers.
Gave train drivers a big rise with no conditions attached
Conspired with Merseyside police to cover up the Southport stabbing perpetrators identity.
Jailed those who made their feelings clear over the whole fiasco.
Hasn't smashed the gangs. In fact more and more arriving almost every day.
And finally.... the cherry on the cake (drum roll) made it his top priority as UK premier to allow in aan anti semitic jihad supporter who openly Hates Britain, white people and Jews, and declared how delighted he was to accommodate him Ta-daaaaa!!!!

They are up against right wing press so the good news doesn't get out , you so have to look for it they are not as left wing as I would like but they are making good changes and getting the job done. I like having a steady hand rather than a "showman" for a pm . So far (and there are more ..
1000 more GPs
Shortened NHS waiting lists
Ended train strike
Increased minimum wage
Renationalising railways
Banned no fault eviction and gave renters rights
Planning reform
Guaranteed homes for veterans/ Care leavers & domestic abuse survivors
Introduced legislation to smash the people smugglers
6500 more teachers
30 hours free childcare
450,000 kids out of poverty
Introduced breakfast clubs
Largest pay award ever for the armed forces

But is it right wing press or are people just pointing out Labour are lieing? Even from your list, most claims are quite easily proven false. Instead of 6500 new teachers there are actually 1350 fewer teachers, instead of more GPs there are fewer GPs per capita, instead of ending train strikes there have been almost double the amount of strike days in 2025 compared with 2024. Smash the gangs ? Theres been a 10% increase in illegal immigration.

That’s before you get to the ideological argument in favour of £95 billion in tax increases, taxing education, authoritarian policies on free speech, identity politics around ‘working people’ etc. covered up with creative black holes, accounting, accusations of being far right and dodgy statistics.

I think this has got to be the most unpopular Government I’ve ever lived through, I saw a prediction of them only having 5 seats after the next election which I can well believe. They are deliberately malicious driven by really sinister motives that very few people agree with.

You are also referring to Raynor, Reeves, Mandelson too I'm guessing with the corruption and lies?

I wouldn’t say corruption on the same level but if you’re after my personal opinion:

Mandelson is vile
Reeves should have gone
Raynor should have stayed

but don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Biskieboo · 30/12/2025 13:40

Yep voted for them last time and would again. Possibly with a bit less enthusiasm but when the alternative is either Farage or Badenoch or some horrible combination of the two then I'd still crawl over a mile of broken glass to do it.

I don't know whether it's social media or what, but I swear most of the UK's adult population are like dozy kids with tiny attention spans these days. The Tories really did leave a terrible legacy to be sorted out, the UK faces pretty serious demographic problems anyway, and there is all sorts of shit going on in the world that is really very unhelpful. Yet because Labour/Starmer haven't delivered a land of milk and honey in 18 months people are once against turning to a charismatic charlatan selling simple solutions, this time in the form of Nigel Farage. If anybody thinks he's got the interests of ordinary working people at heart then they are fucking gullible idiots.

Do you feel that the PPE contracts during COVID were well-managed and handed out fairly, including the use of the VIP lane? Do you think any contracts were handed out because they were donors to the Conservative Party or friends of MPs - and if you do, that was ok?

No, I don’t think corruption happened. All the contracts were vetted by the civil service.

Some contracts were bad, but that was because the government was trying to keep people alive in the middle of a global pandemic. It was an unprecedented scramble.

GLP lost every single challenge on PPE procurement. The VIP lane was held technically unlawful because of a European procurement regulation. The breach was so minor that the court refused to grant a declaration of unlawfulness.

I think it looks very, very bad for Labour to lie about this and to try to score political points from it. Labour’s website pre-election went on and on about supposed PPE corruption. Crickets now.

The ‘corruption czar’ reported last month. Nothing about corruption at all. Just some bad contracts, such as they were.

HTH.

This was done only yesterday. Getting boring now

In defence of Labour (or for that matter any other party in power) the impossible task is getting policy actually implemented. Any new policy will be watered down and delayed by the Civil Service, there will then need to be exceptions made to placate backbenchers, it will then face legal challenges or conflicts with existing legislation or regulations etc. All to the point where the original policy is watered down to the point where it becomes ineffectual.

Secondly they are in an impossible situation economically , they can't increase debt (as Liz Truss found out the hard way), if they cut spending then their backbenchers will rebel and if they increase taxation then the economy will simply further slow.

As a criticism of Labour, I really don't think that they think through the secondary impacts of their policies, for example the restrictions on WFA meant an increase in those eligible to claim for pension credits meaning that the savings were much less than forecast , the VAT on private school fees meant that wealthy parents pre paid, less wealthy parents switched to the state sector meaning revenue raised is much less than forecast. The removal of the non dom tax benefit meant that wealthy individuals simply left the country meaning net tax revenue went down.

This!
Would hate not to vote as people fought so hard for universal suffrage but beginning to think abstention is my only option.

The f* up that is Brexit (and I blame the tories for this entirely) is very difficult to fix.

No. You should blame Ed Milliband for Brexit.

HollyhockDays · 30/12/2025 13:26

Its impossible to change a whole country in such a short time.

peacefulpeach · 30/12/2025 13:25

MandingoAteMyBaby · 30/12/2025 13:12

Well that’s kind of how our system works. You vote for your representative and pester them to improve local issues. That’s it.

How does that work with Labours manifesto promises? And with the things they’ve done but didn’t mention in the manifesto?

Trixibell1234 · 30/12/2025 13:22

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 30/12/2025 13:04

There isn’t a shred of evidence for any of that. (Apart from the world shattering allegation of parties 🙄).

Thank you for proving my point so effectively. 👍

Labour ran a campaign of lies. They have no complaint about any coverage of them.

This. I'm utterly appalled. Took a chance on them and bitterly regret it.

Hard to take but I doubt you’re alone.

That’s great, for you and other locals. Sadly it’s down to a particular individual, which is so often the case in many areas of life.

What new policy has Labour enacted that brings about a cashless society ?

Digital I.D
Pay per mile.
No more jury trials.
Cashless society.
State surveillance.

Absolute no chance.

Hopefully they will be wiped out in Wales next year, that might send them a message!

The major reason for the Tories being labelled corrupt was the Labour campaign of lies

Now you're having a laugh. Contracts for their mates to make millions during Covid? Johnson and his dodgy Russian contacts, his parties, his putting some unknown young woman in the House of Lords? And that's the tip of the iceberg. They were labelled corrupt because they are corrupt, on a scale visible to Stevie Wonder. That's why they are polling at something like 5%

There isn’t a shred of evidence for any of that. (Apart from the world shattering allegation of parties 🙄).

Thank you for proving my point so effectively. 👍

SpinningaCompass · 30/12/2025 13:03

The right owns most of the major newspapers and news outlets ... not surprisingly, that distorts the public's perception of all things political.

peacefulpeach · 30/12/2025 13:01

MandingoAteMyBaby · 30/12/2025 12:52

Our MP changed from a long-standing and particularly ineffective and absent Conservative to a young, ambitious Labour. Prescriptions are now filled faster, we suddenly got a whole load of roads resurfaced - even rurally. And building projects unstalled after years of NIMBYism.

Things started to actually change where they had been frozen in time with the previous guy.

That’s great, for you and other locals. Sadly it’s down to a particular individual, which is so often the case in many areas of life.

'Smash the gangs' was never going work. Smash one and another dozen will pop up to fill the gap. Pointless drivel peddalled out to pacify growing concerns.

It was absolutely hilarious when Stephen Kinnock tried to claim that Labour has already smashed 240 gangs on Question Time though.😂

I’ve voted unreasonable because there was a very similar post up earlier this week and I’m more curious as to why people keep highlighting the same question. I smell a rat There are polls and threads but also the peoples right to keep their vote private between them and the ballot box which is why the polls are often wrong

Yes people have the right to keep their vote private but no one's forcing them to click on this thread. Equally, people could vote on this thread but not comment and then their voting intention would still be private so I don't see the problem.

I'm not the person you're referring to, but I've also seen improvements around here, where I am.
Police on the streets, which I haven't seen for years.
Kind of nice and reassuring to have a "bobby on the beat" again, who you can pass "hellos" to as they go by.
Ringing up the doctors at 8am in the morning and actually getting an appointment for the same day instead of hearing "you are 29th in the queue" then when you eventually get through an hour or so later they've all gone and "ring back tomorrow" 🙄 for more of the same
Just two off the top of my head.

Whereas elsewhere, the number of people waiting more than a month for a GP appointment has soared under Labour - far from reducing waiting times, they've achieved the complete opposite.

💯 agreed. It’s like someone (forget who) in a newspaper article said recently - Labour politicians and people supporting Labour spout the same old shit slogans and statements, on repeat, with zero facts to back them up.

Slogans and soundbites like ‘smash the gangs’ and ‘end child poverty’ are designed to short-circuit thought and leave reason at the door. Used to tremendous success by the communists and nazis.

Embarrassing really. To say the least.
