Labour Voters. Honest question

Tryingtodobetter82 · 29/12/2025 23:46

I’m not looking to start an argument on this subject. I know it’s a very heated and emotive topic.

I have strong views on political issues. What with algorithms and biased news organisations, it’s very easy to end up only seeing information that confirms what we already believe. Because of that, you don’t often hear the other side of the political divide.

I’m honestly curious whether those who voted Labour at the last General Election, for reference I did not, would vote the same way if there were an early GE in January, purely hypothetical of course.

If so, I’d really appreciate you sharing what you feel they’ve done right so far in their term. I’m asking as I genuinely want to understand different perspectives.

YABU - I would vote labour again
YANBU - I wouldn’t vote for them again (or ever have)

Although we are 14 pages in, I love the first page of replies.

I'm guessing, not what the OP was expecting.
Notably she hasn't returned to engage with her thread.

Presumably another of the interns paid to start the 3 or 4 threads a week slagging off the labour party ?

Do you think only interns dislike Labour?

They are up against right wing press so the good news doesn't get out , you so have to look for it they are not as left wing as I would like but they are making good changes and getting the job done. I like having a steady hand rather than a "showman" for a pm . So far (and there are more ..
1000 more GPs
Shortened NHS waiting lists
Ended train strike
Increased minimum wage
Renationalising railways
Banned no fault eviction and gave renters rights
Planning reform
Guaranteed homes for veterans/ Care leavers & domestic abuse survivors
Introduced legislation to smash the people smugglers
6500 more teachers
30 hours free childcare
450,000 kids out of poverty
Introduced breakfast clubs
Largest pay award ever for the armed forces

And while we’re at it can we stop calling it ‘30 free hours’ it’s not 30 free hours… 30 hours per week over 38 weeks meaning for the vast majority it’s at best 22 or in mg case we can only use 6 a day so if you work 4 days a week it’s 24 for 38 weeks spread over 52 which I think is 18 or so…. On those 18 hours I have to pay a ‘surcharge’ and then they’ve jacked the price up on the other hours so I am literally no better off at all.

nomoreforks · 30/12/2025 17:43

They are low average. I was hoping for a stronger and more competent government after the tories. What was the thinking behind the NI rise for employers - complete madness. What was the thinking behind putting full VAT on school fees? Why did they not choose a lower rate say 5%. Round here the good state schools have seen an influx of kids who woould have gone private making it harder for less privileged kids to get in. I bet getting into a grammar school now is like the hunger games. Why didn't they just improve state schools instead? It feels very idealolical and preachy. I am sort of ok with Keir Starmer but he needs to stop changing his mind. over everything. Everyone I know feels flat and a bit worried about the future. I think there needs to be growth in the economy or everyone who is mobile (by skills or nationality) will leg it.

She crashed the market with her budget, people are still feeling the effects

Great example of a better alternative

Reform will be Truss on steroids, even better

She’s not an alternative, she’s not the leader of a party?

What Reform policies don’t you like?

Papyrophile · 30/12/2025 17:37

Cameron promised a referendum to silence his backbench Eurosceptic lunatics but didn't really expect to win the election, and then when the Labour Party picked Ed over David, he won it anyway.

Cameron was an ardent Remainer. Labour traditionally were much less enthusiastic about the EU. Corbyn was virtually invisible for the whole campaign.

The 30 hours free childcare was a Tory policy that was being phased in. It’s a terrible scheme so not sure why they are trying to take credit for it. Nursery bills are still sky high due to cost increases like NI hikes.

i don’t know of any schools that have free breakfast clubs unless you are pupil premium. It’s £5 for me and has been for years

the 6500 new teachers is only what they have said they want - not what has materialised. I believe there are now less teachers in fact

Do you not care about the people who are put out of work - how many?
the closed businesses - how many?
the farmers who committed suicide over the IHT - which hasn’t yet happened
the increase in rents - market forces
the closure of 270 independent schools - 60
the custodial sentences for Facebook posts - Connolly pleaded guilty
the low GDP growth - like the rest of the world
the people who can’t find jobs - why can’t they?
the tax increases squeezing families - there have been no tax rises affecting individuals
the fiscal drag until 2031 - would you have preferred tax rises?
the open borders policies - don’t exist
blasphemy laws - what blasphemy laws?
the decolonisation of state school policies - what does that even mean?

Words salad.

Posting on social media that you only vote for who seems to care the most even if it makes things worse for you is text book virtue signalling. Do you not care about the people who are put out of work, the closed businesses, the farmers who committed suicide over the IHT, the increase in rents, the closure of 270 independent schools, the custodial sentences for Facebook posts, the low GDP growth, the people who can’t find jobs, the tax increases squeezing families, the fiscal drag until 2031, the open borders policies, blasphemy laws, the decolonisation of state school policies ?

There's a range of stuff I care about. While MN is social media, it's 100% anonymous, and this is an actual thread about who, how and why we vote. So it seems logical to write about why.

But if you can only see virtue signalling in wanting to live in a civilised society, I'd posit you're already voting Tory and therefore not in a position to criticise.

@CainsArm You asked for a single example, I gave you one, you’ve had two in fact, don’t go spitting your dummy now.

Edited

One example is because inflation is lower, when it’s actually higher. The other example is because you feel better off even though you have no ‘facts’.

You got me, your logic has defeated me ….Labour are doing an amazing job.

She’s not an MP let alone shadow cabinet. Gilt yields have been higher under Labour if that’s your major concern

She crashed the market with her budget, people are still feeling the effects

The one where Ed Miliband somehow forced Cameron to offer a referendum. Sorry to tell you that this is a strange fantasy of yours! Do you have a second job in Trump's department for stopping wars, by any chance?

What? I never said ‘Ed Miliband somehow forced Cameron to offer a referendum..’.
Quite bizarre thought processes you have there..

And a global issue not caused by the Labour government and which we were recovering well from by 2010. Until some people decided to austerity the hell out of the country and grind the recovery to a halt.

As far as I remember that wasn’t the Labour government either.

Clearly the electorate don’t always think Labour are blameless. They get voted out for not doing well. They’re just a political party subject to scrutiny.

BIossomtoes · 30/12/2025 17:28

EasternStandard · 30/12/2025 17:25

Really? There’s a reason Labour get voted out too. In the 70s and 90s.

It’s just how it goes the electorate votes them out when things feel broken, Labour isn’t immune to that.

The Blair government was voted in at the end of the 90s after 18 years of Tory government. The misinformation on this thread is mind blowing.

Papyrophile · 30/12/2025 17:28

Alistair Darling, then Chancellor, acknowledged that austerity was inevitable whoever was in power.

CainsArm · 30/12/2025 17:28

ClawsandEffect · 30/12/2025 17:07

It so isn't virtue signalling. It's being civilised. Caring for the elderly, the disabled, children.

It's very very sad that you think anyone who cares about that is virtue signalling.

Posting on social media that you only vote for who seems to care the most even if it makes things worse for you is text book virtue signalling. There was a recession in the early and mid-1990s under the Tories, but things were looking up when Blair won in 1997. I think Denizen probably meant 2008, and the GFC, which was genuinely terrifying.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 30/12/2025 17:18

Pfft. Labour’s bankruptcy of the country in te 1970s and 1990s is conveniently forgotten. 🙄

Pffft. Black Wednesday happened when the Tories were in power.

jen337 · 30/12/2025 17:25

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 30/12/2025 15:52

Do you think Labour is “magically” going to turn things round? Or even “unmagically”?

They got in off the back of an exhausted Tory government. And quite right too. But Labour’s proved too stupid, dishonest and craven to govern, even in 18 months.

Labour’s best legacy now is making the right come to its senses.

In government, Labour’s failed even the smallest tests.

I don’t know, but I have ample evidence that the Tories won’t. And that’s the right with its ‘senses’?!

EasternStandard · 30/12/2025 17:25

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/12/2025 17:21

This. And not just now. The Tories break everything every time they get in and leave it for Labour to fix. They haven’t even moved on to Labour aren’t fixing it quick enough yet. They are still on ‘look at all the problems’ while failing to mention they caused almost all of them.

Really? There’s a reason Labour get voted out too. In the 70s and 90s.

My ‘version of history’? You mean the factual representation of events? The one where Ed miliband stabbed his brother in the back?

Edited

Your fantasy.

LostittoBostik · 30/12/2025 17:24

I voted ‘you are not BU’ but partly because I’m disappointed in the short term and if there was a ballot tomorrow I would vote Lib Dem (for the first time since I was 18 - I’ve always voted Labour). But there is still time for things to change. Too much disappointment and echoing reform values so far though

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/12/2025 17:23

It would have to have been st some point between 97 and 99 in that fantasy since the Tories were in government for most of the 90s.
