Would it be really sad to buy myself an ‘engagement’ ring?

Been married for 15 years and at the time dh bought me a cheapish white gold diamond ring and we chose some again, cheap wedding bands.

This was fine as it was what we felt that we could afford at the time.

However as time has passed I don’t particularly like either anymore.

I keep seeing people wearing beautiful engagement rings but again, I don’t really want to spend family money on an expensive ring, even though we could, it just feels like too much of extravagance.

Would it be a bit sad to buy myself a cheap silver but sparkly ring to wear on my ring finger?

Buy whatever you want - but check out auctions - second hand jewellery is cheap as chips compared to stuff straight from the shop, and you get to see a massive selection that way too.

I like vintage jewellery. My engagement ring was antique diamonds. So have a look round. There are some amazing dupes now too.

Look on in second hand shops-can get some lovely rings. When you say you want something heavy, do you mean the stone or the metal?

You can get quite a lot of bang for your buck with an eternity ring. But whatever you go for, I thoroughly recommend buying second hand as it’s much cheaper. There’s a group on Facebook called Gale’s Gems. She’s got everything!! I browse but don’t buy. Maybe one day though.

But at the end of the day we have been married for 15 years and have two children so all money is family money anyway. I wouldn’t trust dh to choose.

I want heavy sparkly ring to wear without paying lots.

The way I did it for my engagement ring is i spoke to him about the ring i wanted, and we agreed a budget and then I ordered it.

There are many options now for budget friendly, Created lab diamonds are more affordable and better quality than "real". Dont rule them out, they look amazing for a fraction of the price.

Could you use the diamond in your current ring to design something else by adding more diamonds or some coloured stones?

Either way, if you can afford it, treat yourself to something you love.

Many people upgrade their wedding rings as they quite often get thin with wear and fashions do change so I don't see any problem with upgrading your engagement ring. Maybe do it to celebrate your next wedding anniversary if you say you can afford it. My husband surprised me with a nice diamond ring for our 20th anniversary and I use my old one as an eternity ring as it is more that style. 20 years later I still love it so was worth the cost.

I don’t see a problem with replacing the original one if it’s no longer to your taste, especially as it wasn’t expensive.

As PP have said, if you want a piece of jewellery and have the money, then go for it. Or it’s Christmas in a few weeks!! Pick one out and ask DH to buy it.

If it’s family money then speak to him. He may be happy for you to choose anyway

It’s a piece of jewellery! Buy yourself whatever you like (and can afford)!

I’m married and don’t have either an engagement or a wedding ring, though I do wear a heavy silver ring DH bought me years ago on holiday.
