To think Jeremy Bamber might be innocent

Or that at the very least his conviction wasn’t safe and there needs to be a retrial? Ihe was convicted in 1985 of murdering his adoptive parents, sister and her twin sons at his parents’ farmhouse. It was at first deemed to be murder-suicide by the sister, Sheila Caffell, who was a diagnosed schizophrenic. Bamber had been on full life tarriff ever since and still protesting his innocence. I always assumed he was guilty until I listened to a podcast called Blood Family. There was a lot of evidence the jury didn’t hear, it seems the police mucked up the crime scene, his cousins had a financial motive for framing him and a police officer in the control room apparently took a 999 nonspeaking call from the farmhouse while Bamber was outside with the police, which would indicate someone was still alive at that point.

Phoning his girlfriend, taking precious minutes when lives are at stake? According to some, because of course one needs support at such a time. (Yeh right when a crazy person is running amok with a rifle)

Plenty of time to phone girlfriend because he knew there was no rush, the deed had been done, and he merely had to meet the police at the scene looking distraught, hence driving there slowly and them passing him.

Distinct lack of rushing around at such a devastating time really. Before we start with other evidence.

This is the thing, to believe Bamber’s version you have to believe his explanations of lots of bizarre and suspicious bits of behaviour.
To believe the police’s version you have to believe that all the places their paperwork or actions at the time contradict their own account are just (convenient?) mistakes.
Either way I find it a stretch.

Maddyisqueen · 04/01/2026 21:31

I just can’t imagine who else did it?

nope for me it’s him - he implicated himself with that phone call saying it was Sheila - we know it wasn’t Sheila so 🤷‍♀️

I Wonder how CCRC are managing to avoid retrial

thing is he will never confess as he has whole life tariff - bundy also never confessed until execution time

Well he found these written logs back in 2011 among a gazillion documents. I guess he thought he'd struck gold at some ambiguity of recording.

Unfortunately its all been brought before the CCRC on numerous occasions and been rejected. And explained as one call poorly recorded.

Edited

Agree the calls are contested but I have no faith in the CCRC to do an honest job in a high profile case. Think of the enormous embarrassment to the system if he were acquitted at a retrial (which is likely given the gaps in evidence, regardless of whether you believe he’s guilty). Not to mention the compensation which they’d now have to give untouched following Malkinson.

What a bad defence - there would be a reason they didn’t refute the prosectution evidence

like Lucy letby - then make a big fuss after the trial when they didn’t challenge it AT the trial

as pp said one was radio log

berlinbaby2025 · 04/01/2026 20:57

The jury never saw both logs of the two calls:

Yes and apparently he kept going on about how crazy Shelia was to police when he arrived …..but he didn’t respond that way when his father allegedly phoned him

as well as leaving a loaded shotgun against the kitchen wall the night before….

Maddyisqueen · 04/01/2026 20:44
  • Single call logged:

The court accepted that only one call was made to the police that night, which was from Jeremy Bamber at around 3:26 am (later logged at 3:36 am due to a misread clock) from his home, not from Nevill at the farm.

Maddyisqueen · 04/01/2026 20:43

WigglywagglyWanda · 04/01/2026 19:45

There was one call. The person who took it explained that it looked like it had come from Neville, but was poorly recorded. It was from Jeremy saying his father had said this sister was going crazy with a rifle.

Yes this. The notes leave room
for ambiguity which is what JB is trying to exploit

WigglywagglyWanda · 04/01/2026 20:07

berlinbaby2025 · 04/01/2026 19:48

One call but two logs? No.

One was a radio log, the other an event log.

Prosecution successfully persuaded the jury that it was a duplicate.

Defence argued there were 2 calls. I guess in light of the other many items of evidence, it was something for the jury to consider.

Neville’s dead - how can we know he’s saying same thing?

Sheila couldn’t have done all that and wrestled with Neville without chipping a fingernail (no shellac or gel then)

what was Jeremy doing in that ten minutes while according to him his sister was going mad with a shotgun? Polishing shoes???

why didn’t the defence present this call from Neville at the trial?

just like Lucy Letby - they couldn’t refute it so kept quiet

Also wouldn’t Neville have left the phone off the hook if he was attacked meaning Jeremy couldn’t use his phone in those days (until caller hangs up) I just can’t see that someone is going mad with a shotgun you would call your son and not 999

There’s pics online of both phone logs. Google is your friend here, such a marvellous invention, you know.

If JB didn’t do it then that ten minutes isn’t relevant, is it? Because he didn’t make that first call.

You really think google is font of all knowledge?

I think your better with evidence

of course the ten minutes is relevant - going mad with shotgun - don’t call 999 - call son who kicks around for ten minutes and then drives to farm at 10 miles an hour and is over taken by police and arrives five minutes after them

the call logs are all questionable btw and ambiguous - nothing conclusive there - amazed you know more than the prosecution and defence

I can't recall if this has been pointed out already, but the call Bamber made from Goldhanger was at 03.36, ten minutes after the first call made by Neville (if it was Neville) from the farm. Bamber couldn't have got from the farm to Goldhanger in ten minutes. Both JB and Neville say the same thing about Sheila.

I do remember mentioning earlier that Sheila had been on that (single) medication for a while and perhaps the medication wasn't making her drowsy as it had done before.

I could be wrong but I think it's possible to tell menstrual blood from other blood in analysis.

And they said they could see blood. The items with blood had been soaking, so the blood would be watery. It seems a desperate link to me.
Yes I’m sure menstrual blood is different to normal blood.

One of the big ones was how the silencer was found by relatives (who stood to benefit from his imprisonment) and then was in the custody of an unreliable detective. There is the possibility of Ann Eaton tampering with the silencer and adding Sheila's blood via some knickers she had found.

Then there is there possibility of a call being made after 6am from the house, which was something I was unaware of before. I did feel he gave a reasonably convincing explanation of why he didn't call 999, although I appreciate he might be a very skilled liar.

Savile is something else - but I think the same level of arrogance applies. These people are superficially charming and think they can get away with things. Until they can't any longer. With regards to Jeremy Bamber - I can see that the police made such a bad job of it, there is plenty of room to claim an unsafe conviction. But he set himself up with the phone call. Sheila could no way have attacked her father and reloaded a gun without the slightest trace evidence, at a point when she would have been medicated and sleepy. And as I recall her autopsy showed she had taken her normal medication. Her nightie and feet were clean and her nails undamaged. Like she'd just got out of bed, one could say.

Maddyisqueen · 04/01/2026 14:40

I heard saville had such shit hot lawyers the BBC couldn’t risk it
