To be a bit stunned by Lily Allen’s new album

Oooofff. I mean it might as well be called Fuck You David Harbour, You Cheating Bastard. Safe to say she’s set a new bar for diaristic songwriting. I feel so sad for her, I know she’s not everyone’s favourite person but it’s always been clear that all she wanted was to love and be loved and she seemed so happy with him- he popped up on her podcast with Miquita Oliver a few times and seemed so genuine in the way he spoke about her… for it to all collapse in such spectacularly public and hideous fashion must have been awful to endure, so I don’t blame her for working through it by going back to what she does best but still… blimey. I feel like I’ve been spying in their bedroom or something after listening to it!

I think that some people need money and some people need sex and when you put those things together people get what they need. And if you make it legal and safe then everyone can do the thing they’ve been doing since the beginning of time and sex workers are less likely to get hurt or killed. So yeah, I’m in favour of prostitution. But you clearly aren’t, so why not? I’m very curious.

You could say the same if you replaced sex with selling your organs, it wouldn't make it right.

Prostitution exploits vulnerable women and is wrong.

Prostitution is driven by economic disadvantage and involves women who are some of the most vulnerable in society. It goes hand in hand with violence and exploitation and drug abuse. 70% of the UK’s prostitutes were from the care system. 75% of female prostitutes in the UK entered prostitution before they were 18. How is this a positive thing? And how would making it legal change the situation for these women driven into selling their bodies?

Why shouldn’t abortion be used as contraception? She can have as many as she bloody likes.

Nice.

Sheezus this thread went a bit bonkers.

I loathed her music when I was younger and didn't rate her much as a person until I read her autobiography.

I think the album is decent. I agree with PP that male musicians with very questionable (often illegal) actions don't receive quite the same level of vitriol about their personal life when releasing new music.

If anything it’s hushed unless it’s something particularly heinous but most of the big guns have never lost any popularity.
apart from on today’s discussions about lily, I’ve rarely seen anyone cite led zep and Bowie as problematic due to their history with underage girls

Why would someone be for prostitution?

At the time of the Saville, Haris, et al arrests and subsequent allegations against the 70’s DJ’s as part of the Operation Yewtree Enquiry -DH and I commented at whether or not that level of scrutiny would later be directed towards the aging rockers still banging about or posthumously.
Bear in mind they and their victims in autobiographies/accounts at the time clearly document underage ‘ groupie’ sexual activity/ ‘relationships’

AKA now and then by most - as abuse /rape/ exploitation.

Yes. It is absolutely the fault of the customers of the sex workers that sex workers exist.... because they wouldn't be sex workers if they didn't have any johns

Why are you so against prostitution?

You deleted her albums when you had your daughter?! What? Why? Because you disapprove of her behaviour?! That’s weird. Did you delete the music of say, as an example because I have no idea of your musical tastes, The Beatles? Because those guys did way worse than Lily Allen could ever dream. Even lovable old Ringo almost beat his wife to death! But yet still, my kids primary school has them singing Yellow Submarine in assembly FFS.

This is all pearl-clutching, misogynistic nonsense and this thread is genuinely shocking reading. I didn’t know people still thought like this!

13/14 year old girls climbing through windows/air conditioning vents to line up and perform sex acts with the members of Led Zepplin (plural) is well documented. Similar for the Stones, Bowie, Beatles and others ‘of that era’
Later the Chilli Peppers as recent as the 90s where Matey is on record stating that one he realised his girl friend at the time and daughter of local sherrif or such like, was actually only 14 and dad was out looking for him - he’s better get his end away quick before they found her
etc
etc
well documented not hard to find that info

Absolute cunt- fuckers vile men.
disgusting

Wonderful, wonderful music tho
listen to them all
the time

But context matters. When someone is in the grip of addiction or deep emotional pain.
I'd say over 70% of criminals have been in the grip of addiction or deep emotions pain, it doesn't excuse hurting others or prison space would be plentiful.
Her situation with her DH was playing with fire, again risky, risky actions have desperate consequences.
Her Children are the victims.

It doesn’t excuse but I also have a lot of compassion for a lot of people who have committed crimes.

And I wouldn’t necessarily want them in my life or even on the streets but I don’t automatically hate or disrespect everyone who has done something bad.
one of the components of the justice system is that criminals need to show genuine remorse and a desire to change, be culpable, and own their actions.

things go wrong on release when they don’t stick with the changes and go back to their previous habits and lifestyles
those for whom prison or rehab or hospital sections etc work are those who do the work to keep maintaining or improving their life and rehabilitation becomes a tangible outcome .

blatantly Lily has done things many of us might not do or would not do, some of us definitely have.
she has talked at length about trauma and rehab and therapy and sobriety etc and has been very open about the things she has done and how they affected others.

i don’t necessarily agree that the candidness is ideal for the children to hear but that’s her choice as a parent.
in discussion with my children I am very open on the whole but as they get older they ask more pertinent and mature questions and i sometimes dread what they might ask me because im not ready to share some of it yet, mainly because of their emotional maturity and because I grew up very damaged and undiagnosed neurodivergent.

lots of my life ‘choices’ are not things i am proud of and to explain nuances and trauma and substance misuse and vulnerability is difficult because of their age but here we are adults with all kinds of lives experience

Everyone has their story.
we are all human and none of us completely without blame.
some people are in circumstances which drive horrible behaviour

I’ve not heard it yet…. But hee songs always were a bit like that ‘fuck you, fuck you very mu-uuuu-ch’ was one from years ago wasn’t it?
I used to be a fan and deleted her off devices when I had my daughter many years ago. Then she’s had a few years of not doing much due to becoming a mother herself didn’t she?
I do love her voice though, The song she sang for the John Lewis Christmas advert was lovely

Bambamhoohoo · 26/10/2025 18:08

Not sure she’ll make that much. I have just finished listening to the rest is entertainment who revealed that to earn minimum wage (as revenue not taking into account any costs or revenue share) an artist would need 567,000 streams a month. Lily is going to get many millions in the next few months but it’s not going to last forever. If she doesn’t tour there doesn’t seem to be much money available

Fridgemanageress · 26/10/2025 17:53

She has always sang (and made a lot of money) about family members - I’m glad she isn’t a family member of mine.

She then says horrible things about her feelings towards her children. No wonder hubby went off for comfort elsewhere, you wouldn’t want to be around half the toxicity that she pedals.

carchi · 26/10/2025 17:49

AmIthatSpringy · 25/10/2025 18:24

Im surprised she's still relevant.

Clearly she has run out of money because she was never really relevant in the first place.

Mangetoutmangetouti · 26/10/2025 17:31

If a married / partnered person pays for sex without their partner’s knowledge, that’s a betrayal , man or woman.
But context matters. When someone is in the grip of addiction or deep emotional pain, as lily was at the time, their choices often come from survival mode, not entitlement or thrill seeking. It doesn’t excuse the behaviour, but it does change what it means.
and it is up to the partner / family how they choose to deal with it, whether to work on it together and independently or whether it’s an unfixable breach

Her situation with David is different again. If they agreed he could sleep with paid strangers but not have an affair, that’s a boundary, a messy one, but still a negotiated arrangement / agreement that he reneged on . The question is whether she actually wanted that, or whether she said yes because she felt like saying no would cost her the relationship.

What’s striking is how quickly people forget that men do this all the time and get treated as flawed but forgivable.
Ive seen hundreds of posts on here over the years where the woman has chosen to forgive her partner and work on the marriage.
When a woman does it, it’s “proof” she’s unhinged, broken, or deserving of punishment.
The public loves a redemption arc for men but rarely extends the same empathy to women, especially women who are open about sex, addiction, or regret.

on a technical level, paying for sex while married isn’t morally different between genders.
But the reaction to it is. The outrage towards her says less about ethics and more about how uncomfortable people still are with women owning both their sexuality and their damage, both inward and outward and how we/ they express it.

That is not what I said. I'm starting to feel a bit sorry for you in all honesty, I hope you have a good weekend

I asked you earlier

Do you expend so much compassion and understanding on male punters?

You answered

No, I don't

You then changed your tune in your later posts when I asked again if your requirement that we apply compassion and understanding applied to male punters or just Lily Allen? And said "yes it does"

You changed your tack and are now trying to make out I'm just too stupid to understand you.

Nothing, including your hand wringing on behalf of Lily Allen, excuses the use of prostitutes. I find your posts embarrassing.

You said earlier you wouldn't waste time trying to drum up compassion and understanding for "damaged" male punters. Are you changing your tune?

Still an apologist either way.
