To be a bit stunned by Lily Allen’s new album

Oooofff. I mean it might as well be called Fuck You David Harbour, You Cheating Bastard. Safe to say she’s set a new bar for diaristic songwriting. I feel so sad for her, I know she’s not everyone’s favourite person but it’s always been clear that all she wanted was to love and be loved and she seemed so happy with him- he popped up on her podcast with Miquita Oliver a few times and seemed so genuine in the way he spoke about her… for it to all collapse in such spectacularly public and hideous fashion must have been awful to endure, so I don’t blame her for working through it by going back to what she does best but still… blimey. I feel like I’ve been spying in their bedroom or something after listening to it!

I get all of that. I think the bit I struggle with is her giving DH such a central role in her daughters’ life. I guess we never know how much of what she said is bravado (another reason why I’m cautious about taking her ‘honesty’ at face value), but she did seem very much to set him up as a father to them.

Yes I agree. We can only speculate but I presume he sold her a dream and no matter how recovered she might be, she may still not be immune to charms of a man offering a fairytale.

i feel for her and i really feel for her girls because she has been incredibly candid and raw and although i have experienced mental health blips as a single mum, (including low episodes when a relationship has imploded )
I have never expressed any of my dark thoughts or fears and I would hate to think of them worrying about me.

i grew up with mentally and emotionally unstable parents were there was addiction issues etc and its had a lifelong impact on me ,
I lived much of my life in pure fear, fight or flight and a state of panic and nothing was secret or sacred, i knew way too much, before i was able to understand any of it.

i feel for her girls in that regard and hope that they’re living a life where they are protected from the worst of it and with their dad as a safe person for them while she was recovering.

The whole broken English album is about relationships, life and pain but the song Why'd Ya Do It is one of my favourite relationship let down rage songs ever , way more ‘rrraaaaarrrggghhh’ vicious than anything Taylor swift could produce

Ok…but it isn’t particularly like West End Girl in any way other than being an angry breakup album - as in it doesn’t sound the same, the lyrics, vibe and sentiment aren’t the same, the culture being skewered isn’t the same, etc. I hardly think you can say that LA’s album rips off Broken English!

Wouldn’t want to be Madeleine either. She gets a lot of name checks.

She absolutely doesn’t land anything at Madeline’s doorstep though. Very fair to her.

Vile . I have definitely been there when younger 😭😭😭
i remember one of the podcasts where she said she was reading a book about open relationships, she didn’t sound happy then

I remember one of them where she talked about DH being (I think) disappointed that she was so vanilla. She was quite lighthearted. Kind of “he knows I did all this stuff in the past and now I don’t” and laughing. I think a lot of that podcast is going to be seen in a whole new light.

I also acknowledge I’m spending far longer than a woman of my age should dissecting this.

BackToLurk · 24/10/2025 18:52

Yes. And on reflection I wonder whether she was so full on involving DH with her daughters in order to create a perfect little family. Having read some of his interviews where he talks about the selflessness of being a stepfather, I think he probably sold her a lot of bullshit and preyed on her insecurities

Anyway I’ve listened to some of it and my main takeaway is “David Harbour, what a prick”

I thought he was such a good one - the way he spent time with the kids on his own and mooned about Lily on the podcase.

What a shit.

By all accounts, she seems like a really good Mum and spends a lot of time with her girls.

It does seem like she's trying to stop the cycle and strives to provide a loving home where the kids and their friends love to congregate.

Oh come off it, I'm not judging you by pointing out that at the end of the day, two women talking about their own lives and experiences isn't subject to your own personal sensitivities. When you choose to take their comments as someone personal to who to the point you're disgusted by them, there's some judgement of their experiences there. Notice I didn't call your opinion disgusting and I didn't also say you should never be able to comment, because I'm not actually judging you for your opinion by commenting in disagreement.

Ok.

localnotail · 24/10/2025 18:45

OMG, people are so.... come on. Who tf is judging a pop music album in terms of artist's moral, their personality or parental skills??? Are you for real?

Its entertaining. Its unusual, its brutal, raw, shocking and funny. I understand if someone says "I dont like her voice" etc - but saying "I wont listen to it because she had abortions and did not regret it, she is a bad parent and cheated on her ex" is completely ridiculous. Since when we became Bible belt Americans? Getting a strong album burning vibe here.

Fucking brutal. What a prick.

"If you have to ask me, you're toast". That sentiment has to be the only response if you have any self respect.

And the type that trot that line out have been cheating already,

I knew Lily when we were kids, we were friends for a while. I was going through some shit myself but she was by far the saddest child I've ever known. I hated going to her (Mum's) house (never went to her Dad's) because it didn't feel like a home at all.
When she put out her first album I mostly thought 'oh shit she's never going to find peace now' and... so it is.
I feel sorry for her but I feel even more sorry for her kids, I guess that's intergenerational trauma for you though.

By all accounts, she seems like a really good Mum and spends a lot of time with her girls.

Wasn’t she pretty deep into her drug/alcohol addiction at the time?

She said on the podcast that she used female sex workers after the break up.

Christwosheds · 24/10/2025 18:27

Started listening out of curiosity , had to stop after a few bars . The unbearable auto tune, and the equally annoying constant glottal stops. She really doesn’t sing well. I can’t comment on the songwriting aspect as I didn’t listen for long enough, but I am surprised that anyone would think she has a good voice.

Why shouldn’t abortion be used as contraception? She can have as many as she bloody likes.

I don't think you know the meaning of the word CONTRAception.

Although you might not agree, it’s not actually that unusual. Plenty of people meet someone new and set up home with them/introduce them to their kids. And sometimes that relationship goes on to fail.

She said that the album was autobiographical plus artistic licence so really we still don’t know the full facts.
with regard to the abortion chat, it certainly sounded like gallows humour when I listened to the podcast and very reflective of the time, and of girls who are lost in one way or another, which as a pp has written, is very common, drink, drugs, chaotic lifestyle, abusive relationships etc can all lend themselves to learning to needing a termination or several.
as can conditions like adhd, mental illness, and various types of personality disorder , childhood trauma etc
all of which could easily explain many of the less savoury things lily has done and might also explain her lack of inhibition when it comes to publicising the disasters of her marriages.

if she has any of the above issues and possibly an eating disorder she is more likely to choose relationships which aren’t edifying for her and could easily believe that marriage like hers and David’s will work even if she doesn’t ultimately suit the terms and conditions, she might have overlooked her gut feeling or red flags because she could really want her happy ever after and sell herself short, shrink her self (literally in her case) to win the ‘love’ and approval of this man she had on a pedestal

with regards to the dog, the media did conflate that, she said that there’s been a catalogue of disasters, there’s been intervention and that dog was a poor fit for her family.
she had it rehomed. This is not in any way unusual for rescue dogs, many many people are landed with dogs with high anxiety and challenging behaviour which never goes away and some people do end up giving the dogs back or rehoming them because they’ve made a decision and they don’t take it lightly.
i think lily tends to sound abrupt and cold or try to gloss over things and use humour to deflect, the dog thing blew up and the abortion podcast came later and I think that as well as gallows humour, she may have over egged it somewhat following the media furore about the dog rehoming, in an ‘in for a penny in for a pound’ type of way.

Google in less time than it takes to post on here?

I’ve not heard an album like
that before. Have you? Genuinely interested to know who you think it is derivative of? (Of course it exists within a genre of confessional break up, but it does something very distinctive within that genre, I think).
