They’ve got millions . Make them pay some of those millions to a women’s charity.

BBC STORY:

A charity run organised by the East London Mosque Trust has excluded women and girls aged 13 and over from taking part.
The Muslim Charity Run, which was held in Victoria Park in Tower Hamlets on Sunday, said on its website: "Our inclusive atmosphere ensures that every individual, from the youngest to the oldest, can take part and make a difference."
It added: "This is open to men, boys of all ages and girls under 12, but everyone is welcome at the park to cheer on the runners."

The Muslim Charity Run says its "inclusive" race is open to men, boys - and girls under 12.

Do you really need to ask? Have you not heard of the equality act? Read it and it'll tell you why this event is all types of wrong.

This type of event - a charity fundraiser - where specific groups are invited to take part, is perfectly lawful. For example, imagine an event organised by the Stroke Association whereby only people who had suffered from a stroke could take part, would you object to that?
Muslim girls are unfortunately subject to all sorts of exclusions, all perfectly legal.

SomeGreyDay · 13/10/2025 17:43

" it's fine"? How on earth is it fine to discriminate against girls and women in a supposedly inclusive event? Religious organisations don't have the right to pick and choose our laws based on what they decree as ' correct'.

I said it's OK to have separate events. They should have similar investment and funding, proportionate to the number of runners. I've given you a list of women only activities at my local mosque, are you suggesting they should be open to men too?

If the ELM is only organising events for men then that is an issue and they need to be challenged. But if you tell people they can't have segregated events then you are imposing on the UK's religious freedoms which are for everyone, not just you.

Er, these ones do - religion. Belief is a protected characteristic.

But the women also share that belief.

greenleafy · 13/10/2025 17:40

What do you mean by "these men" and "UK laws" and "law of the land". Anyone would think you're racist and viewing Muslims as foreigners 😏

I meant exactly what I said. I think most people who aren’t trolling will realise I’m a feminist and find it unacceptable that in that charities eyes that equality in the UK doesn’t extend to Muslim women in the UK. Do they not deserve rights too?!

Thatstheheatingon · 13/10/2025 17:48

I'm surprised to read other posts saying there are "women and children of both sexes" events, as I'm not sure how that can work legally.
Other than babes in arms, eg boy babies at a breast feeding group!

Merkins · 13/10/2025 17:47

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 13/10/2025 17:12

That's not what is happening here.

The Equality Act permits groups and organisations for people who share a protected characteristic, excluding all people who do not share that protected characteristic.

What it doesn't permit is a race in which women over the age of 12 are excluded. Because men and boys don't share a protected characteristic with girls under 12.

Er, these ones do - religion. Belief is a protected characteristic.

Could you explain how it is that female only events are apparently lawful under the EA but this one isn’t please?

Because it’s not just male only. It’s for Muslim males and Muslim females up to age 11

This isn't a male only event, since they allow girls under 12. So it's not a single sex event. So what are the grounds for excluding women 12+?

Sorry but your comments are beside the point . Doesn’t matter if we’re not Muslim. Doesn’t matter if the Muslim women “don’t mind”. How dare those men disregard the laws of this land. How dare they exclude women over 12. They need to be made to understand UK law in financial terms. I.e. a massive fine. They have millions & can afford it.
I bet our country will be too pathetic and weak and afraid of upsetting people to do anything.

OP I’m confused at your posts. If that’s that clearly illegal, why are you posting a call to legal action (what even is that?) why don’t you just take legal action yourself?! Why does someone else need to do it for you?

DramaLlamacchiato · 13/10/2025 17:44

This event is discriminating on 3 characteristics:

religion
sex
age

they may be able to justify an event for Muslims or even an event for Muslim males but what would be their justification for the age discrimination as well? That their religion sees females who’ve hit puberty as lesser? Is that likely to be a legitimate justification

SomeGreyDay · 13/10/2025 17:43

nomas · 13/10/2025 17:35

It's fine as long as they organise a separate event for girls/women over 12.

Seems alright. I've been to events which are women only, but children (of either sex) are permitted. It's the exact same thing.

Me thinks the OP's shit stirring.

I’m not shit stirring. I’m advocating for Muslim women’s inclusion in a running event instead of just being there to cheer the men and girls under 12 on.
But interested in legal view. If I’m wrong I’ll just have to accept

I took part in a women only running event last year. Should that be banned too?

There is a specific exception which makes this lawful (Section 193 (7)):

It is not a contravention of section 29 for a person, in relation to an activity which is carried on for the purpose of promoting or supporting a charity, to restrict participation in the activity to persons of one sex.

The charity could have organised a male only run but there's no lawful mechanism that I can see for what they're doing.

Muslim women don't exercise with Muslim men. Religious rights exist, and are allowed for under equality laws.

Women and men only spaces are also allowed to exist. For example, there is a women's only floor at my gym. Whilst some women use the bigger communal space downstairs, I've never seen a muslim woman outside of the women only floor.

Exactly. We are in the UK. A Christian country.

greenleafy · 13/10/2025 17:38

We have women only swimming in our local pool, but little boys are allowed.

But as Muslims sport is often divided by sex. There are plenty of women only sport groups and activities.

It's really OTT the way everyone is going on about this one piddly fun run. It's run by a mosque.

If you're not Muslim or you don't attend that mosque I don't see why it's anyone's concern. Are the women of that mosque having problems with it? If so then fair enough.

Absolutely not being unreasonable. Silent acquiescence and compliance now will create bigger problems later on.

I assume by "sued" you mean "prosecuted".
If you feel that strongly, make a complaint to the Charity Commissioners and the Police rather than post on MN.

No, she means sued. The Equality Act is civil law, not criminal law. Nothing to do with the police or prosecution.
