The council should be taking down England flags in public places?

I have driven through a couple of areas in the last few days where England flags are being displayed on public lamp posts, it makes me feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome in the area and I think gosh I’m glad I don’t live here, but why are the council not taking them down?

Been along to see some flag flying patriots today - lovely group, had t-shirts and suits with flags on too, and even a hat that said c u next Tuesday - family orientated, brought the kids and taught them the swear words - saw Seig heils, heard some saying we should get raped, and also our kids, was at the wrong end to get the beer on me, or a bottle, saw the nice police doggies having to he used to prevent a hotel being broken into.
Patriotism at its finest then.

The problem is now, if people did actually start putting swastikas up, no one would be able to make that much of a fuss as they have already been crying wolf about the national flag of our own country being flown in our own country.

Ah - got a swastika painted in a local supermarket, along with flags hung up - same time.
Saw a few Seig heils today from the patriots with flags I went to ‘meet’ today too.

Mary Whitehouse!!?? How old are you???

No it's just that needing to drop the f word just means that an argument is likely to be lightweight or non existent so doesn't need dealing with. And your post f**king proved that.

I am 57. How old are you?

Is that right, Mary Whitehouse?

Some grasp onto any reason to dismiss reality. I use fucking all the time. It's a grand fucking adjective. Grin

Unfortunately we live in a world of permanently offended snowflakes looking anyway out of the reality of the reason behind and consequences of their actions. They actually need external validation for the decisions they take in their own home FFS.🙈

We live in England , I expect to see English flags … in Scotland I saw Scottish flags .

I don’t expect to see them shittily painted on every bloody roundabout, or crappily tied to lampposts with cable ties.

It’s not even part of British culture to have the flag everywhere - national days of importance and sporting events is where it’s historically been seen. We’re not Danes.

If you use the word "f**king" in a sentence it can safely be ignored.

See. You can do nice things for people when you try.

OK you've persuaded me. I will get one and fly it from my home (although no one will see it. Although my family and I will which will be nice).

You're not going to fly one from your home, despite the warm and fuzzies you get from flying it? Why do you need others to see it to get the benefit of it?Confused

I am against flying a flag when its used to divide and intimidate. I know the intent of the flag shagging, racist, bigots behind Operation: Raise the Colours. They haven't hidden it.

Well there isn't a huge amount of point me personally flying a flag as there isn't anyone to see it. Maybe I might attach some to my car if I can find some tomorrow. I'm all for it, just a bit disorganised.

I've spent too much time explaining why I don't think most of those flying flags are racists. If you are against flying a flag yourself, you won't know the motivation of why other people do chose to. That's just reality I'm afraid. You can"t read minds. Unless you are God. Or Professor Charles Xavier?

Seriously? You argue the cheeriness and pride you ascribe to flying the flag, but you don't fly one yourself? Why not?Confused

What is it about the backing of bonefide racists that has empowered you now?

Meadowfinch · 28/09/2025 20:57

OP, what gives you the right to decide what should be done?

An Engish person flying an English flag in England is not and never will be unreasonable. A Scottish flag flown by a Scot in Scotland is equally reasonable. Neither act is illegal.

You don't get to judge.

bemoresloth · 28/09/2025 09:20

So nothing like the ones half mast on lampposts and road signs then Confused

Nobody has epressed any problems with what you are describing.

Well to be fair OP didn’t say wether the flags making them uncomfortable were properly hung or not.

No I've already said I don't at the moment but I've been inspired to do so by this thread. I think it's good to fight back against the bigots who tar everyone with the same brush and cry wolf about people being racists without knowing them. It's insulting. But that's just my personal view and you are my inspiration. 😊

Go for it

The county council have already said that they'll remove it, as time permits.

"We"?

Im part of that we. We who know the intent behind using the country's flag like dog piss on lampposts to mark territory. @Love4both said the quiet bit out loud, if you do not like what the racists are doing, move somewhere else. She demonstrated greater understanding of this than your niaive or faux naive(?) take.

I'm in NI and have a lifetime of experience of flag shagging bigots.🙄 Flags go up then residents are put out at great cost to the taxpayer and trauma to the victims. The flags are both a warning and an intimidation tactic. That's something that we can't and shouldn't ignore.🤨

Do you have a flag up on your house @Dogsandhens?

DdraigGoch · 28/09/2025 18:35

I'm ex-forces. I'm very much in favour of flying the flag proudly. Flying it sloppily is disrespectful.

And yes, the motives of those involved in the current campaign are suspect. To the extent that people who have been flying the national flag for years are now leaving their flagpoles bare because they don't want to risk association with the knuckleheads. I'm going to assume that anyone using a cable tie on a lamppost got the idea from Britain First. I don't assume the same of people with proper poles.

As I said. A divisive approach which I don't like at all. We will have to agree to disagree and leave it there.

Council matter, not police. Highways department or planning department.

You could perhaps ring the police and report all the infringements. Show them the rules too. And if they ignore you then at least you've done what you can.

I get it if your objection is that they are scruffy. I think thats a reasonable objection although one I dont agree with. I don't think they should be taken down.

It's those menacing people who put everyone into one box and accuse people that they don't know of racisim that I find most worrying for the future of this country. It's an insidious divisiveness. Very unBritish actually, I'm surprised to find myself typing.

It's illegal to affix things to property you don't own, unless you have permission from the property owner. No one is stopping anyone from erecting a flagpole of up to 15ft upon their own property and flying any national flag from it so long as it is properly maintained. You don't even need planning permission outside of a conservation area.

A handy guide to the rules here, rules which this lot are plainly not complying with:
