Why does everyone say they love being fat until they get their hands on skinny jabs?

I’m seeing this so much on social media. People screaming from the rooftops how they love their bodies. Hate comments come and they combat them with body positivity, I admired them so much.

Lately though, the very people who were oh-so-body-positive are popping back up five stone lighter. Some comment on it and some don’t, as if they’re waiting for people to ask. Hang on a minute, I thought you loved your big body? Did you love being fat or not?

It's not about thinking you're better off fat the idea is loving your body no matter what - as the alternative (hating yourself) is no good for anyone.

I am very fit and strong (and not fat) but I am unattractive regardless and am currently facing significant hair loss as a result of a medical issue. I try very hard to stay positive and focus on the good things. That doesn't mean I wouldn't love to be attractive. I'm not a fucking idiot.

I imagine they had tried at various points to lose weight through diet and/ or exercise and failed, realised not being fat was unobtainable for them and so taught themselves to embrace their body. Loathing yourself isn’t healthy.

The injections have meant it is now obtainable for some of the people who weren’t previously able to lose weight to do so. Being thinner suddenly is obtainable, and losing weight comes with health benefits as well as aesthetic ones so it is sensible for obese people to lose it, even if they liked their fat bodies.

Obesity isn’t the only place where there is a body positive movement. I have a close friend who has become disabled and is now a wheelchair user, online she is very positive about her body and proud of her disability, but I also know she would lose her disability in an instant if she had the choice. Just because somebody takes the cure when it’s available doesn’t mean it wasn’t okay for them to feel positive about their body before that cure existed.

Yes that's a good analogy too . I am so grateful to wheelchair influencers who made me get the confidence to use one out and about, it has transformed my life. I love my chair and don't feel at all pitiable, it's far better than being housebound. I would give it up in a heartbeat for my health though!

I’ve been slim and I’m now fat and I find that women are nicer to me now I’m fat and I’m not sexualised by men anymore. But I would love to be slim to look good in clothes and fit health reasons . Because I’m vain . But I know the bitchiness and lewd remarks would start again . Can’t win either way .

Ha! Yeah I also quite like that I no longer get sexually harassed or even randomly groped by men. It's definitely been a silver lining

Good job no one is forcing you to then.
Obesity also comes along with serious health complications, so many people will deem it worth the risk.

Maybe if I were morbidly obese and I felt the benefits outweighed any particular risks. These things can have serious side effects. I'm a bit overweight but I'm very fit so, for me, it's not worth the risk.

I do agree it’s feels a bit disappointing when people who made their image about being big and accepted use the jabs. To me, it suggests they were never sincere and undermines the message they previously delivered.

You see, I really cannot fathom this? You deliberately denigrate WLI by describing them as 'stuff', implying they're dodgy, murky and potentially dangerous? When in fact the active ingredient in WLI is one of the most thoroughly researched and tested drugs on the planet, used by millions of people over the last 20 years.

And yet, and yet you happily choose to put excess amounts of highly processed foods in your body which have been proved to cause Type 2 Diabetes, obesity, heart disease, increased risk of strokes, kidney disease, high blood pressure........the list goes on and on.

Madness.

How do you know so much about their diets? Or are you making assumptions?

Why do people admire honesty? I find it baffling.
I admire reticence.

Thank you - I have - blood tests showed nothing odd. I think it is just that I've got away with a terrible lifestyle for decades - too much booze, food and literally zero exercise and I can't get away with it anymore.

I hear you. I am 40s now and weigh 10kg more than I did five years ago, same exercise, same diet. Thinking of giving up toast but fear my life will not be worth it.

Holmints · 06/08/2025 10:28

BeltaLodaLife · 06/08/2025 09:56

What did you admire them for? What’s admirable about it?

I’m about 4 stone overweight. I know I am. I know it’s bad for me, I know I don’t look good in a lot of clothes, I know I’m not healthy and if I don’t sort it out then I’ll have issues and cost the NHS money to fix them. I know all that; if I jumped up saying how amazing it is to be fat then I’d be a liar. Just like every “body positive” person you admire is.

I admired their beauty, their confidence, their ‘honesty’. I feel a bit lied to. They helped me feel more confident but it was a sham, they don’t celebrate my body type at all.

I'm sick of hearing about these injections - the people who take them never seem to shut up about it. I think that's the bigger issue - attention seeking (usually on SM) from both 'body positive' people and the jab users.

You know you don’t have to read the threads, though right? And if you didn’t engage with the posts on SM, you wouldn’t see them.

Aspanielstolemysanity · 06/08/2025 10:27

As someone who put on a huge amount of weight when on steroids, I am so grateful to the influencers who gave me ideas on where to shop and what to wear. I don't see why I had to be ashamed of my body when it was literally that way because I was fighting a serious illness. I was grateful for the same reason to influencers who shared wig tips and confidence in hairloss when i switched medication.

Being yelled at in the street, or sneered at in the spa, just because you are on life saving medication, is not for the faint hearted. I was grateful for the influencers who made me feel less alone and made me feel I was still allowed to do things I enjoyed and take care of my appearance

Weirdly when I was anorexic many years previously I was complemented all the time. Our society is pretty fucked up.

Most people, fat, thin or otherwise, should get off social media. It turns the most sensible people into attention seeking narcissists.
I don't count MN because it's anonymous.

BlackCatGreyWhiskers · 06/08/2025 10:26

My body is more than just its weight, it grew my children, carries me through life, allows me to exercise and experience life. I can appreciate my body and my ability to be attractive and still want to be thinner?

SwingTheMonkey · 06/08/2025 10:25

Agix · 06/08/2025 10:00

Of course people should love their bodies as their body is. What, you want them to sit there despising their body? Wait, don't answer that... We all know society wants fat people to sit there and despise themselves.

Many people found weight loss very difficult, or very slow, or the actions needed to enable weightloss lowered their quality of life (calorie counting, lack of food joy, making time and energy for exercise etc) so sustainable weight loss was extremely hard for them.

Of course they had to make peace with their bodies.

Now they have an injection which makes that weight loss much easier. It didn't mean they didn't make peace with their bodies previously, or learn to love the skin they felt stuck in... It means a new option is on the table.

I remember watching a fat positive influencer back in the day in YouTube. She said straight out "if there was a magic wand to make myself thin, of course I'd wave it, but I can't".

Well, the injections are that magic wand, so now they're waving it.

Don't get me wrong, I have issues with the injections - I have anorexia, have been in treatment and forced to eat more and gain weight, and take great issue with it now being okay to eat extremely little when you paie for an injection to make it possible for you to do so... but it is apparently a mental illness and a medical problem when I do it for free (I'm back at it now though - what they gonna do? I'm not eating any less than injection patients) .

But my issues arnt with the people taking them. I totally get it, really. I wish people could be better than me but I now realise that they're not - only difference between me and all these mounjaro takers is that I can starve myself without the injections. We're all the same, and society is to blame for it.

Sorry, you keep saying this every time there’s a thread like this. Most WLI users aren’t starving themselves. They are eating to lose weight. Which means reducing calories. Not starving.

If someone is on WLI and they’re eating starvation rations, they are on too high a dose or the medication isn’t suitable for them.

Honestly, these threads clearly aren’t healthy for you to read.

SomeOfTheTrouble · 06/08/2025 10:24

Fat people can’t do anything right, can they? If they claim to be happy with their body they’re deluded, normalising obesity, ignoring health risks etc etc.
Lose weight though… ‘but I thought you were happy being fat, you’re a bullshitter, you’re letting people down’ etc etc.
What do you want fat people to do?

KateMiskin · 06/08/2025 10:21

I actually think Mindy Kaling looked better before..But possibly she is healthier now.

Theteenandme · 06/08/2025 10:20

Because you can love numerous things?

Maybe they did love their body but realise being slimmer is healthier?
Maybe they were quite happy with their body but were fed up of negative comments from others?
Maybe they feel obliged to lose weight?
Maybe they are just jumping on the bandwagon?

I like being short but if there was a magically way that I could suddenly become taller then you betcha I'd take it. The world is built for people who are taller than me. There are more advantages being a little bit taller than I am. My life would be easier if I was a bit taller. It doesnt mean Im not happy being short.

Maybe it's the same with weight?

DancefloorAcrobatics · 06/08/2025 10:01

Marketing is working very hard to make being fat unacceptable.

It was working real hard a few years ago to make it almost desirable though wasn’t it?
It’s amazing the amount of body positive people now dropping weight and pretending it’s down to ‘taking the stairs’. Fucking Billy bullshits in so many ways.

BlankBlankBlank14 · 06/08/2025 10:20

Don’t a lot of people have a false persona on SM? You know, photos of them together as a family walking through the woods happily laughing together….. in reality when you speak to them, they’re marriage is in crisis and the children are driving them mad.

Do you believe everything you read on SM?

CommissarySushi · 06/08/2025 10:18

There's a difference between body positivity and fat acceptance. One was co-opted by the other.

Originally, the movement was about accepting and loving your body, even if you had stretch marks or a bit of cellulite on your thighs or some post-pregnancy loose skin on your belly.

JackGrealishsBobbySocks · 06/08/2025 10:15

If your other habits haven't really changed, please do see a doctor. It could be nothing, it could be something

Self defence mechanism, I should think. And a good thing too.

Otherwise self loathing and depression would set in. What's the point in letting that happen if you have the presence of mind to make peace with your self?

But you know it's a compromise. If then you are offered a way out which was previously unavailable to you, many would take it.

Agree with this.

However the worry with all the body positive stuff is that it normalises obesity which, irrespective of whether one thinks it’s “unsightly” or not, puts unnecessary pressure on organs/joints etc.
