Name something unhygienic/disgusting but people do it

I start off:
. Holding money their mouths. It’s mainly an elderly person thing. Friends working in retail see this often. Even in mask wearing days, customers lowered masks to do this, yet denied it.
. Going to the toilet and not flushing
. Washing chicken out. People don’t realise that this can spray bacteria around. Cooking it properly will kill bacteria.
. Coughing without covering mouth. Even with Covid, people are still doing this.
. Not washing hands after using loo. In public toilets, I use hand sanitiser as seen people from certain cultures spit and mums letting their toddler DS to wee in the basins.
. On planes, people walking barefooted especially in toilets. With the quick turnaround of planes, the staff can’t clean everywhere

Phones in bras.. boob sweat against your face on the phone 🤢

Skimpy thongs with see-through cycle shorts and those crop top bra thingys with socks sliders, especially on the school run 😬

Leaving litter on beaches, green spaces.. ANYWHERE that's not a bin. Take it home people it's not hard!

Hoodies in 30° heat

Deodorant avoiders

People leaving their toenail clippings laying around

Snot in jumper wipers

Having dirty animals living in their homes with them.

Thank goodness most people have clean animals

I'm always put off having an ice cream from street vendors (or from some shops) because they don't wash the scoop in running water. They dip it into a basin of cloudy, ice-creamy water...and surely that can't be hygienic?

That's how a relative discovered that her DD has an allergy. She had an ice cream and it must be something on another ice cream that got into the container of water. Her lips and eyes went very swollen. Had some tests and found she's allergic to a food colouring.

My friends who work in retail - their managers will back them 100% if any customer demands to speak to a manager after my friends and their colleagues refuse to take their money as been in their mouths. As well as money, customers hold coupons, lottery tickets/slips, scratchcards and receipts (if wanting a refund/exchange) - in their mouths.

Asking - are these customers that do this at your work, elderly? They are the rude ones, not the staff.

Are you just 'elderly' bashing OP, you've mentioned it several times now.

I work in retail, and our bosses said during covid and still to this day, if we serve customers with money in their mouths we can refuse to take it. I’ve had to do this on a few occasions, you’d think they’d apologise or find a different note, but no they double down on it. They argue with you, they become all entitled going on about “legal tender” which is a myth anyway. Or have the cheek to call the staff rude.

stick other people’s genitals in their mouths.

Wait, we're supposed to put our own in our mouths, not other people's?! 😱🤣🤣

I think I wash my chicken just to upset people on Mumsnet 😄

That's the only reason I have tattoos

Like goats, or something? Or do we mean just standard pets 😂

When you get served a coffee or drink in a cafe/pub/restaurant and they hold it by the rim and then you have to drink where they’ve been holding it. Huge irritation of mine!

Men are more likey to leave skidmarks on the bed, shed hairs just as much, are more likely to shit themselves, are irrisponsable with money, mostly un-housetrained: and unlikley willing to learn, and prefer to stick their hands down their own pants, have a rummage and then sniff their fingers afterwards. Men are also far more effort and less affectionate than a dog. I far prefer my dogs to any man i have ever had the misfortune of having dated.

Jesus, I've never met a man who routinely shits himself and leaves skid marks on the bed. You need to find better men.

My ex did too. It was absolutely vile.

Letting dogs sleep on/in the bed

I wouldn't have it any other way. My dog has no more germs than I do.

Rancor · 02/07/2025 16:24

Biting nails. I am guilty of this, it's a habit I've had since childhood so it's a strong urge!

Bonbonthechewyone · 02/07/2025 16:23

Expecting the clinic receptionist to touch your urine pot/stool tube/sputum pot with their bare hands. No. Please either put it in a bag and hand it over or put it in the offered tray. Deeply unpleasant and unhygienic.

All new to me, I dont know anybody who washes meat at all.

We were camping with family once and MIL washed chicken in some cold water, and then washed the bowls they were going to eat from in the same water ...which seemed counter productive Confused....and germy!

The whole concept of dog-ownership is disgusting, but from a hygiene perspective, it's vile.
They poo, and then their anus is on your floors, sofas, bedding. The eat poo, they eat vomit, they sniff other dogs' asses, then their face is all in your stuff. Rank.

I feel the same about cats, but they aren't as filthy as dogs.

I kind of agree with this.

I know people will say - humans can be gross too and of course they can be but not the ones I live with!

Just don't get the appeal of having an animal's bum on my sofa/bed, having my face licked by a creature that just licked its own bollocks etc

Sooo..not a dog - lover, then?

I work with the “Great British Public” and can assure you I’ve seen some foul, filthy and disgusting things done by human beings (I’m talking hotel & restaurant setting )… who are apparently far more intelligent than dogs.
Dogs are domesticated to a degree, but are still animals and will behave as nature intended. We can choose wether to have them in our homes and beds, working alongside them with regards to being clean, hygienic etc.
The human beings, however are expected to have learnt manners, hygiene and general good social behaviours. Come and work where I work, a well established, well run hotel and restaurant and you may well change your mind. In my 50+ years of dog ownership, none of my dogs have ever…

Wet the bed
Shat the bed
Left skid marks on bedding and cushions
Wiped their bums on hotel curtains
Burnt holes in furnishings, or set fire to their room
Been aggressive and abusive to anyone
Made anyone cry
Left wet and setting cement in rooms
Shat in the restaurant deliberately during a busy shift.

My dogs have, over the years, brought me far more joy and love and comfort than any of the thousands of customers I have dealt with.
** not all customers are vile, many are lovely, kind and pleasant.

Coughing and sneezing without covering their mouths/noses
Not washing hands after using the toilet
Not closing the toilet lid before flushing
Men who walk around with their hands down their pants 🤢
Kissing your dog
Letting their animal sleep in your bed

I think when people say they wash meat, they don’t generally mean they hold it under a running tap with water splashing everywhere, or that they think washing meat removes bacteria. They usually have a designated bowl which they use a mixture of water, lemon juice and vinegar in to rinse the meat thoroughly to remove slime and all the residual bits that don’t get cleaned off during processing, and the chicken cavity that’s to be stuffed, before seasoning / stuffing it. I’ve always done that and just treat the bowl that’s had the raw meat in it just as I assume people treat their chopping boards and knives when they prep meat: good kitchen hygiene.
