To be oblivious to the issue people have with JKR? I thought she was a feminist. What have I missed?

People have warned me not to state the view above as ‘it’s more complicated’

The issue is that histrionic people have loud voices on the internet. And that’s all it is. They are saying ridiculous things, loudly and repeatedly. If it were real life, you’d ignore them. Histrionic personality disorder is a real thing. People that have it don’t like to admit it.

“Working class doorstep.”

You learn a new expression everyday!

I was a bit more 😐at that expression than seeing it as a learning moment tbh.

Unpleasantly classist. And with just a soupcon of anti women sentiment.

And from someone saying that other people are 'bitchy-bitchy'..

There is a prize of £1 million if you can find anything that she has said or written that is transphobic.

Actual transphobia, not the 'words are literal violence' and the 'Recuing poorly bunnies is transphobic'.

Just to confirm, to my knowledge nobody has ever won this prize to date, correct?

Because it is a sexual orientation and more than the sexual equivalent of 'dry January'. It is something that is not much understood and that people get bullied over, like with any other difference in fact, because our society is still so incredibly normative.

It's not a sexual orientation according to the Equality Act.

Say, for the sake of argument, that it is one. What does this extra understanding and awareness achieve? Asexuals have all the same rights as everyone else. Someone who is going to bully you for not having sex is not going to stop just because of Asexuality Awareness Day. If anything it just provides another excuse to mock.

Most of us live in the grown up world where we accept that not everyone is super nice all the time and sometimes we are going to be confronted by other people who are unpleasant or whose opinions offend us. Adults learn to brush these things off and give them as little attention as they deserve. Adults realise that having eleventy billion awareness days is not necessarily going to achieve anything and may indeed be counterproductive.

I'm not campaigning for a gender critical feminism awareness day, even though it would actually be really useful for the general public to understand what we believe and why it's not legal to discriminate against us.

The hate seems to be mostly keyboard warriors, and dare I say it, people who don't have much going on in their own lives. I only experienced it once as I'm not on social media or twitter etc. Ds goes to a hobby club, mostly quiet tech types and the classes are run by young men, helpful lads but not so strong on social skills. One day DS turns up in a Harry Potter T shirt and was told by a leader that he shouldn't support HP, when he asked why he was told JK is basically a bad person and homophobic. I said i had never heard this, I heard some people disagree with her views on certain things but the 'homophobic' angle was news to me. I knew damn well where this was going as I'd read her essay and some articles on it. These guys all started shouting the most awful things, one guy who had never spoken or indicated that he even had a personality was in DSs face talking so passionately about his hate for her. This went on a while, like they were bonding over their views. I don't think any of them read her essay and what they were saying sounded like a total misinterpretation, it was eye opening. I chatted with DS afterwards but the whole incident kind of scared me. How many more people out there are like this?

Fwiw I make a point of never watching anything with Emma Watson or Danielle Radcliffe anymore and have zero respect for them.

I have been searching for tweets that would support the claims that she is bullying specific people and I cannot find any that is not her pushing back on abusive male people who have directly abused her.

If people are making these claims, please can you list examples of those so we can all see.

Otherwise I think it is becoming apparent that those making those accusations are inadvertently supporting abusive male people in their abuse of JK Rowling and of other women.

Meanttobeworking · 16/06/2025 11:38

Can’t believe the trouble this woman got into for insisting women should be called women.

i mean that’s literally all she did.

DunnoMate · 16/06/2025 11:32

I’ve only read the first page of posts but @laughingnow i had the same confusion/ question as you.

I live abroad and not on twitter so seem to out of the loop a bit but have been equally baffled by the vitriol towards JKR. And even more so when friends (whose opinions and views I generally respect) seem to also think ages abhorrent.

When I read a few articles etc in the whole thing I couldn’t fathom what she’d done wrong and am in agreement with her views. I think there’s a name, with special abbreviations, that I would now be labeled. Im certainly not transphobic, but I as a mother to 2 girls, I will not let their rights dwindle and all the efforts of those who’ve stood up for women in the past go to waste.

Why do we need to be aware of people who aren't having sex?

I find there is a huge amount of misinformation on google. When I google something that I want to check, I can go pages with misinformation or carefully curated information rates highly on search engine optimisation but is full of false information.

I no longer tend to tend google at face value, just like wiki.

Those saying “it’s complicated” might be mocking Harry saying that to Griphook in the final film; and Griphook repeats this line back to Harry. (I don’t know if JK wrote the screenplay of the final film.) Also, many of the haters probably haven’t seen the films, or even read the books.

I laughed at reafing that the haters hate her because she didn’t invent the concept of houses. A magic school is also not her invention - Jill Murphy’s “The Worst Witch” is old enough to be Harry’s mother, she pre-dates him by a quarter of a century.

Well quite. But apparently anyone who thinks her books are original is thick because she just ripped off The Worst Witch, despite them being nothing alike. Other than the magic school part. And I don't think Jill Murphy was the first person to write about such things either.

Helleofabore · 16/06/2025 11:20

Have we got the examples of JK Rowling 'bullying' specific people?

Or is it really just that JK Rowling has not been kind to abusive male people who have abused her directly? Some of which have made her the focus of their abusiveness now for a very long time to boost their own engagement figures or to get applause from others?

This mumsnet chestnut again: “the OP could just google it!”

Here is why people don’t want to google:
Google replies are likely to be AI generated, and probably more biased towards the status quo, which is (to many people) that JK is evil. If the boss of google believes that (I don’t know if it’s true), then the replies will probably reflect that.

Asking on mumsnet brings (I hope) mostly real replies from real people.

I googled something the other day, for medical school btw, before anyone accuses me of being obsessed by genitals. The topic was the ligaments between the urethra and the pelvic floor. Low and behold, the AI answer proceeded to tell me that the urethra was connected to the vagina…

I don’t think she was being ‘whiny’ or ‘huffy’ at all, just calling out something that she, and many others, don’t feel there’s a need to have a day of awareness about. Not everything needs a day of awareness. Where does it end? That doesn’t equate to not caring that being asexual might be bothersome to some.

If a TRA posted the same tweet I’d bet my last mars bar that they wouldn’t be called whiny or huffy.

Wasn't she calling out the claim to them being oppressed?

JKR didn’t do that though did she. She expressed her own opinion. That’s what Twitter/X whatever it’s called now is for.

As I said - we don’t have to agree do we

(although imo saying what we do and do not need is dictating to people what they should and should not take benefit from.)

Stompythedinosaur · 15/06/2025 14:19

Feminism is not one single thing. There are different views within feminism.

Surely you haven't missed her conflict with the transgender community?

JKR is a trans-exclusionary feminist, I'm a trans-exclusionary feminist. There isn't just one set of beliefs, people disagree.

Do you mean by this that you and she support female only spaces? Just making sure of my terminology!

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 16/06/2025 11:04

JHound · 16/06/2025 11:02

Are awareness days just about discrimination?

It’s perfectly comparable in terms of raising awareness of something which does impact the lives of individuals and people they form partnerships with.
I maintain her post getting whiney about that (as well as being clearly misinformed) was weird.

If something is not for you - ignore it. Especially when it literally is not harming anybody.

I love JK, she is a feminist. The people who don't think she is a feminist are those who think humans can change sex and that women should give up our rights for those who believe wishes impact biology and magically transform men into women.
