Does anyone else not like using names much?

I don't know why but I feel quite embarrassed about this and wonder if it's normal.
I'll use their name if I have to, such as to gain their attention but I've never been the sort of person to say, Hi Sarah, how are you Sarah, etc .. even with my own parents and partner.
However I feel like people use my name all the time, every time they speak to me. Maybe as it's short?

Hate it. Except with DC, maybe it's different because I chose their names? Don't know. Anyone else, including DH, and it makes me cringe a little.

I also hate saying any standard seasonal greetings. Like happy birthday, or merry Christmas. I just can't make it sound natural.

Yes! I have no problem saying dds names at all, love saying their names. And say Happy Birthday to them, never said it to anyone else!

Waiting to be told I'm weird 😂

It's used as a plot device in Hamlet to show how insincere and well how dodgy Hamlet's new stepfather is, he uses Hamlet's name constantly.

I'd say the same applies in real life.

Can't bear it or my name being said either, never have liked it.

Wanttobeanonhere · 13/02/2025 12:02

Google ‘Alexinomia’
is it this @Ditaditaddddita ?

Mozzarellaballs · 13/02/2025 12:01

I actually get what you mean! I use peoples names if I know them well buy I never address people by their name when greeting them at work etc. I have never lived with my Dad and I always feel abit shy or embarassed calling him Dad to his face too and I don't know why. Also slightly off topic but I hate it when people start telling me stories like Mandy came round the other week and she was saying Nathan did this and I'm thinking who the f are you talking about?? I would say 'my sister' or 'my sister...followed by their name' I don't just assume people know who I am speaking about.

CherryPopShowerGel · 13/02/2025 12:00

I find it so, so bizarre when someone is talking directly to me and uses my name. Like who else are you talking to to need to make it clear that sentence is directed at me? It's fine in a group to get someone's attention or highlight them. But anyone using your name in a one on one convo is weird.

Blarn · 13/02/2025 11:57

No, I'm the same. Used dhs name maybe twice outside of our marriage ceremony and I have known him about 25 years! I never even say Mum or Dad to my own parents now I think about it. Using a name maes me feel oddly embarrassed.

Rewis · 13/02/2025 11:52

I never use people's names if I'm talking to them directly. Other than to get their attention. I find it weird when people do.

romdowa · 13/02/2025 11:49

I don't mind using people's names but I don't like people using my name. I hate when my husband uses it!

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/02/2025 11:48

It's fine attracting attention (Hi [name]) or giving instructions ([name] can you do this please) it's the unnecessary insertion of the name mid- sentence when someone is already talking to me I don't like. I'm struggling to think of an example though. The husband of an ex colleague used to do it a lot.

honeylulu · 13/02/2025 11:45

I've just remembered something else. In the 80s there was a playground trend that if you called out someone's name they would retort "yes that's my name, don't wear it out!"

honeylulu · 13/02/2025 11:43

I don't tend to unless I'm attracting their attention or referring to them in the first person. I'm not really sure why but (as another poster mentioned) I do have some autistic traits, pointed out by the consultant when my child was diagnosed.

I have to say I really like being called by my name. Except if they get it wrong - I have a preferred diminutive and hate the more common one; I also have a surname similar to a more common one.

I'm a solicitor and I've noticed barristers address me and others by name a lot, it feels kind of flattering I suppose and makes them seem confident and aware of detail. Does that make sense?

I would like to do it more but I think deep down that (a) I've never really done it so I'd feel self conscious making the change and (b) feeling annoyed when people get my name wrong makes me paranoid I will do it myself. I remember someone correcting me quite sharply and telling me her name, Sophia, was pronounced SO-feea not so-FEE-ah (the more common way). This was several years ago and I remember clearly how bad i felt. We worked together a couple more years but I don't think I ever called her by her name again!

Superscientist · 13/02/2025 11:41

Yes yes yes!
I have a memory of being about 7 and not knowing what to call my friends mum - Mrs A? Her first name? B's mum? I have had a fear ever since and have to make a conscious effort to use names

MirandaWest · 13/02/2025 11:26

I don’t like using people’s names. My dad taught me for 5 years and my mum for 2 of those years and I don’t think I ever called either of them anything in that time!

lovingmememe · 13/02/2025 11:23

I use peoples names its normal.
However in my family we dont use names only if we have to.
We are given a name at birth the norm then our parents give us a nick name thats what we use and our nick names stick for life its normal for us odd for outsiders.
Even our kids call us by our nick names no mum or dad.

Libertysparkle · 13/02/2025 11:23

I'm the same. Fine with family, apart from in laws.

TheOriginalEmu · 13/02/2025 11:22

Me! I hate using names. It makes me cringe inside. Especially if it’s full names. I don’t know why!

Dotjones · 13/02/2025 11:19

The only time I use names is when the meaning may be unclear if I don't. In a busy office it makes sense to start with "Hi XYZ" because if I just say "Hi" either half a dozen people will look up or nobody will. If there's nobody else around, it's obvious who I'm talking to though.

SantasLargerHelper · 13/02/2025 11:18

Natsku · 13/02/2025 07:24

I don't like using names much because I have a constant low level fear that I'll use the wrong name and embarrass myself. I've always been really bad at remembering names and faces.

This is me exactly 💯 🤣

Lou205 · 13/02/2025 11:18

I managed to rename someone in my head that I'd worked with on and off for a few years. The name I've given them suits them so much better 😂. Yes OP, best to avoid using names especially if you're anything like me.

ItGhoul · 13/02/2025 11:16

Most people don't use people's names a lot in conversation, unless they're actively trying to get people's attention. When someone repeatedly addresses another person by their name in normal chat, it can actually seem a bit creepy.

Dweetfidilove · 13/02/2025 11:09

Names are to be used sparingly, then use pronouns as intended.

89Brachen · 13/02/2025 11:06

It’s a sales tactic to seem familiar.

I used to absolutely hate to use names and didn’t until I was well into my 20s. I still do sparingly because it feels over familiar. I wonder how many of you are socially awkward or have autistic tendencies?

mewkins · 13/02/2025 11:06

DisplayPurposesOnly · 13/02/2025 07:25

People who over use names are weird.

I agree😁
