The double standards on here are getting out of hand

SpunkyAmberReader · 30/01/2025 06:52

A male posts that is his wife is grumpy and complains and its immediately the man's fault: "you're not loving enough," "what do you when she complains," "she complains for a reason," "you don't appreciate her enough," "do you get her painkillers when she said she has a headache."

Yesterday I read a thread about a woman who was considering ending her affair because her husband had been diagnosed with cancer and a few posters told her to continue and not feel guilty.

Another poster wrote about her daughter complaining her father / posters husband was always miserable and lots of posters attacked a suggestion that the posters should try to cheer up her husband. The gist was a wife isn't responsible for trying to make her husband happy.

Therr is a really nasty double standard here and in society.

@Didimum it is literally named MUMSnet.

The only reason men are promoted as being welcomed with open arms is because nowadays we are obsessed with being inclusive.

Do you have any evidence to support your claim that is the real reason? Are you in touch with the site admins?
Because from where I stand it looks like you plucked that nonsense out of thin air.

The same double standards exist the other way in real life though, you just don’t see them written on a forum:

Man walks down the street, nobody bats an eyelid.
Woman walks down the street & is told ‘cheer up luv’ ‘smile’ etc.

Woman lies on the beach and topless sunbathes & is described as ‘attention seeking’, lacking dignity etc.
Man with same size breasts as above mentioned woman walks openly along beach promenade, sunbathes, and moves throughout hotel topless. Nobody bats an eyelid.

Sure, but this is not a bloody competition to see what sex/gender stoops the lowest.
This is a place where posters come to seeking advice which is meant to be reasonable and not based in hatred.

Why does a woman's perspective mean it's inherently against men? I just see it as a different way of viewing the world, not as it necessarily being some sort of defense or attack of men.

It's generally an acknowledgement that the entirety of our society is structured in a way that benefits men. This is the fundamental disconnect between the rights of the two sexes and the issue that equality has not only never been achieved, but its prospects seem to be moving rapidly backward.

It is not a level playing field, and this is the situation women have to navigate. This in turn means we are not in a position to negotiate it in the same terms as men. This is simply not possible.

Read the thread about the hideous discrimination against a pregnant woman in her workplace. About the numerous references to women's aid, the danger women are in when leaving an abusive or controlling partner, the alarmingly frequent murder of women by men, the necessity of having to risk-assess in everyday situations. The proliferation of incels, now openly boasting of their grotesque misogyny offline, and all-too often infiltrating this site.

The concept of a double-standard benefitting women as opposed to men is so transparently ludicrous as to be risible. But the OP very likely knows this. The site is lately full of wind-up threads intended to push the buttons of its members.

JustAskingThisQ · 30/01/2025 09:21

I think what happens on here is similar to something I've experienced with colleagues.

So you're all in a relatively shitty job, some of you manage to see the job for what it is, a way to make money. You may vent about it on occasion, but it's more a method of social bonding than expressing the turmoil haunting your soul. You have no plans to uproot your life to find a new job.

You have 3 sets of other colleagues. You have the ones like you. Then you have the ones who can't move job but are terminally miserable. They are resentful of anyone like you who doesn't want to rock any internal boats.

Then you have the people who are pushed out by the awful conditions. They stick around and encourage everyone else to also jump ship. Even when it wouldn't be best for them and they know their decision has come with hardship. It might have even been hasty. They think anyone who doesn't want to is too stupid to realise or are even colluding with those in control for their own gain.

Shetlands · 30/01/2025 09:20

Oh look, a thread from a man complaining that "A FEW" women having double standards means that Mumsnet is getting out of hand. Come on ladies, buck your ideas up and stop saying things that might upset men.😂😂😂

Phthia · 30/01/2025 09:19

What I find fascinating is the way politicians etc with utterly abhorrent views and policies, including misogynist ones, suddenly become heroes when they advocate gender critical policies.

IAmAWomanWorkingFromHome · 30/01/2025 09:16

The cancer thread yesterday was as low as it gets.

TbH though, I think that we can acknowledge that affairs happen on both sides, so maybe it’s not unreasonable to assume that all stories have two sides even when it’s the woman being cheated on.

SerafinasGoose · 30/01/2025 09:15

Therr is a really nasty double standard here and in society.

Oh, there is. And you're suggesting that men in general are the ones to suffer under this professed double standard? Really?

Get real.

There are sites peddling and pandering to this arrant nonsense everywhere on the www. Not to mention 'society'. The clue here is in the name: Mumsnet.

ThatMerryReader · 30/01/2025 09:12

It is called misandry: contempt towards men. And it is an attitude as abhorrent as mysoginy.
That coupled with the fact that some women are green with envy that other females are leading very successful and fulfilling lives while they are alone and miserable.
Thankfully, only a minority of posters showcase these appalling attitudes, but they surely know how to disrupt the threads.

Edited

Thank you for perfectly demonstrating misogyny. Womens motives are always jealousy.
Do you have a link to any evidence of your claim that this is how women behave?

Most posts on here are from a woman's point of view so will be against men

I think you’ll find that a significant number of posters are not parents.

And quite a few no doubt are, like me, long past the parenting stage, so are here for other reasons.

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 30/01/2025 09:08

Yeah you see it all the time. Someone suggested the double standard on the woman who cheated and started her thread ‘no judgement’. I told her her behaviour was abhorrent and that is exactly what I would say to a man.

Couldn't agree more. Examples that spring to mind:

Woman looking to hire an escort, that's fine. If a man uses one, divorce him

Woman comes in to inheritance, keep it secret. Man keeps it quiet, divorce him

Woman seeing much younger man, it's fine, have fun. Man seeing younger woman, sick

Woman gives stripper a blowjob, just keep it from your partner.

Woman has stripper on hen do, totally fine. Man goes to strip club, divorce him

All posts I've seen in the last twelve months

And it was the exact same posters on both threads giving conflicting advice was it? Or no, it wasn't and you just expect women not to act like individuals but one big hive mind?

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 30/01/2025 09:06

Didimum · 30/01/2025 06:59

It’s a site for parents.

Judellie · 30/01/2025 09:04

I wouldn't have come here if it wasn't called 'Mumsnet' because I would have thought it was like everywhere else on the internet- dominated by male perspective.
There's actually loads of stuff here for everyone but I would suspect that some women come here for support in the first instance just because of the name.

CurlewKate · 30/01/2025 08:58

@SpunkyAmberReader
You want to do something about double standards? Then start working on society. Start campaigning for men to take an equal share in childcare and domestic work so that women don't lose out financially and in career terms when they have children.

That's why women need to have their own money, secret or not. Because if a woman partly or wholly dependent on a man who is able to earn money because of the unpaid work she does, she is utterly screwed if he leaves her, or she wants to leave him.

I don’t think we need to campaign for that, just expect it and move on from accepting it.

I left a man I had to mother, and am marrying a man who could run this house without me in it.

Put the mothered men in the bin; and find the ones who don’t require it. No protest necessary.

HardenYourHeart · 30/01/2025 08:00

So what?

You hone in on one thread with a few posters you disagree with and judge the whole of Mumsnet by these replies whether other posters may disagree or not?

Talk about selection bias.

Someone asked for the link to that thread.

Golden407 · 30/01/2025 09:03

mantaraya · 30/01/2025 07:14

I agree but I think it's a reaction towards the fact that in real life the double standards are so heavily in the other direction. A man is six times more likely to leave his wife after she gets a cancer diagnosis than the other way around. Men are so much more likely to be the parent to neglect their responsibilities to their children. I think it's cathartic for many women to be in an online space where they can put women first.

I think this is the study you're referring to:

https://retractionwatch.com/2015/07/21/to-our-horror-widely-reported-study-suggesting-divorce-is-more-likely-when-wives-fall-ill-gets-axed/

That study was horrific, its become the gold standard in demonstrating how not to conduct a study. I won't bother going into it, it's not really related to the thread but it can be safely disregarded.

There's just lots of different views. Just like real life, some people are sensible, some people are crackers, but here you have the added piece of anomality so some posters probably are really themselves and "enhance" their views to be put it lightly or to get attention.

RareFinch · 30/01/2025 09:01

vivainsomnia · 30/01/2025 08:47

Lots of posters screaming 'if OP wasn't a woman she would get different answers' missing the point that not many women see their DC a handful of times a month

Lots of posters missing the point that it had nothing to do with how much contact he had but aboudemading a change to their established arrangement to suit her when it didn't suit him as he is working (self employment doesn't mean you can just give up one afternoon work without any consequences). After stating that there is no childcare available and she'd be relying on her new partner to step up for her on her days.

This is exactly how it works. A thread highlighting an issue but posters focusing their response on the one thing they can use to condemn the male.

He was too busy working to pick up the DC from school at all but earnt too little to support the DC in any way. Posters telling her she was morally wrong to expect him to pick DC up from school once a fortnight, because she had an affair. But it is OK to treat DC and wife badly, that is morally fine apparently. We'll have to agree to disagree. And actually in court, most judges would explain that mothers are entitled to work on Dad's days, so Dad should pick up or arrange childcare. The mother needed to work as she was the sole provider for their DC.

IkeaJesusChrist · 30/01/2025 09:00

An OP was told to LTB because her husband had dsred to tell her that she stunk, if my husband smells I'll bloody tell him!
