To think mid cycle bleeding is common

Hi, I have been suffering from midcycle bleeding for 3 or 4 months. I get pain on my left side, which feels like a dull ache. It goes around to my hip and lower back on the left side. The bleeding is light, and only when I wipe and pinky red coloured. It is intimittent stopping and starting again over about 2/3 days. I am also constipated. I am 39, no pain during sex and no vaginal dryness.

What could this be? Has anybody experienced similar symptoms?

Dh has had a vasectomy, so no chance of that thank goodness. I'm 39, with a 7, and 5 year old.

Vasectomies can fail.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 12/11/2024 15:30

Once I had a gynaecology referral things progressed quite quickly. The GP may want to do some blood tests first but do push for a referral too.

Sorry this might have been addressed, but have you done a pregnancy test?

I some times had spotting because my hormones were part of the problem so I also had a cervical ectropion (checked with a colposcopy).
The pain was monumental it was like I had a spiked golf ball in my groin and that someone had covered me in chilli from knee to navel. So backache, front ache, groin pain - I would struggle to stand upright for about 48 hours.

The level of pain is not necessarily linked to the seriousness of the condition. I used to get terrible backache with my periods as we’ll because I had endo on some of the pelvic ligaments.

Oh thank you, this sounds so similar. The pain feels achy on my left, and sometimes like a deep nawing deep in my hip. It can affect my groin too, and back. I usually only spot around the day of ovulation (and not every month). This month, I have had it cd10, cd15, cd19, cd20 (today). I usually have my period cd25.
When I say spotting, I mean really light when I wipe, and not every time I wipe, so I'm not bleeding all day, it could be as little as 2 times at the toilet that day iyswim. Theb other times absolutely nothing. I get ewcm when I ovulate and then no unusual discharge or anything after that, in that respect everything seems as it should be.
How long did it take you to find put if you don't mine me asking? Did you get irratic spotting too?

Thank you, rang the GP, and they have said to ring first thing in morning for an appt tomorrow. I have had some more light spotting today (cd20). I'm getting period pains almost like about to come on my period 5 days early. I am going to get checked.

In the meantime has anybody had this? Pains only on one side, and across lower back. Could it be the starts of peri menopause at 39?

Edited

I suffered with ovulation pain for years but I already had had scans etc and had a diagnosis of PCOS, endometriosis and adenomyosis.

Any new persistent symptom should be checked even if the most likely explanation is something benign.

Go and see your GP.

Thank you, did you get spotting with this, and any back pain?

Stop trying to diagnose yourself online and make an appointment with your doctor.

If it's ovulation pain and spotting then great, you have nothing to worry about, but if it's something more serious then at least you can be treated appropriately.

My mid-cycle bleeding was a symptom of PCOS.

September1013 · 12/11/2024 11:36

Please see your GP. The likelihood is that it’s nothing serious but mid-cycle bleeding should always be checked out to exclude cervical cancer, even if smears are normal.

Fakinguntilyoumakeit · 12/11/2024 11:33

I'm starting to think I have a UTI, my pelvis doesn't hurt today, and just some aches in back and frequent urination. I think I have pulled a muscle there after some physical activity which coincides, and then that and the possible UTI.

I do have a hormone imbalance, too. I'm epileptic and this triggers my seizures at the two points of my cycle. (I have a lot going on). I have my LH surge between dc17 and cd19. I start my period cd25. It is CD 20 today.

When I think back when ever I haven't been on the pill I have always had ovulation pain.

I get this and honestly, so do a lot of women I know. I went to GP and had ultrasound which was fine, as was smear. I think mine is around ovulation too but can also be a week or so after my period.

MsPavlichenko · 12/11/2024 08:01

Fakinguntilyoumakeit · 11/11/2024 21:51

Thank you, it is worrying isn't it? I am sp sorry that you had to go through this. My Mum had benign ovarian cysts, which makes me think that maybe I do.

Last month I didn't have any issues, the month before I did, and this month I do. If it is alternate ovaries each month, it makes me think it is something to do with my left side.

Dh, and I have had a good feel of my stomach, and no lumps, or bloating where it should be, both sides feel the same. The pain has lessened today, and I expect it to be completely gone tomorrow. If all symptoms haven't gone I will ring the GP.

Edited

Please wrong the GP in any case, even if your symptoms have gone. It may be entirely innocent but all non menstrual bleeding needs to be investigated. It’s taken very seriously.

CraftyOP · 11/11/2024 23:34

See the GP, I went as was having weeks of spotting, irregular periods etc. He wasn't worried but I had a smear all fine which was almost due anyway and blood tests all fine except I'm often anaemic which has weird symptoms. Went back on the iron and been regular since. I have a copper coil and similar age to you, I don't think what you describe is uncommon but good to chat to the doctor

ShinyBinLid · 11/11/2024 23:28

What I think it is... is a reason for a GP visit! Please get yourself checked out!

PrimalLass · 11/11/2024 23:26

OP says it’s new for her. I didn’t say it doesn’t happen but it’s really not common.

NHS: ovulation pain and a little bleeding is common.

OP, please don’t trust Wikipedia as a reliable source of medical information. Jeez.
speak to your GP.

FFS. I said yes there's a medical name for mid-cycle pain and spotting, but go see your GP.

How about the Mayo Clinic - is that better?

merryandbrightdelight · 11/11/2024 22:44

Op I could have written your post myself! I have lots of threads on this, but mine started a few months ago.

Periods started aged 11 and were long (7 days), painful and heavy
Pill (different types) from ages 15 to 26 (ish)
IVF at 27
DD1 at 28
Back on pill, then off pill
DD2 at 30
Depo from 30-nearly 33

Periods returned after 6 months but were sporadic - first few cycles were between 23 and 25 days, then 28, then the last 2 have been around 34 days long. Periods are now lasting for about 4/6/6 days and are quite light.

Never any pain or bleeding during/after sex, or mid-cycle bleeding.

Smear end of July this year (painful and difficult, tilted cervix - always have to go to colposcopy for them).

One episode of bright red blood after sex, day after period finished. Went to nurse who referred me for a scan, but said it could be an ectropian. No bleeding at all after sex since. Nurse said to keep a log.

Since, I have my period, and then I have mid-cycle 'bleeding' like you - very light pink on the toilet paper, nothing to fill a pad or mark underwear. Lots of EWCM around ovulation, last cycle a brown streak. Back to see nurse, and explained that from my log over the last few cycles, the 'bleeding' is once I've finished my period, up to ovulation, and then nothing.

Ultrasound showed everything was normal but said I have a 'bulky cervix' and scan was 'borderline'. Nurse wasn't concerned and said everything else is exactly what they would expect to see, but referred me to gynae just for reassurance because I have horrific health anxiety.

Gynae rang to book me for a colposcopy. I cried down the phone (because of said health anxiety!) and it was actually the same lady who did my smear. She said everything I'm telling her, plus my smear, and my scan, sound normal. That she can't say 100% because she hasn't looked yet, but given everything else, it sounds like it could be hormonal, and that when my smear was carried out, it's like something's been irritated.

Anyway, my appointment is tomorrow - however my period has now arrived, albeit lightly, so I'll have to ring in the morning and see what they say.

Either way I will update - sorry for the really long post, but everyone is right saying get it checked out, but I've found some posts here quite triggering, so I just wanted to share my experience. Let us know how you get on 😊

I should also add that a friend of mine is a gynae nurse and she said to me to request an MRI for adenomyosis which another pp has mentioned. An MRI is the best way to detect this, but I explained that from day 28 I get horrific period pains off and on until my period on day 35 and she said to look into this.

LaLaLaurie · 11/11/2024 22:41

Just because it’s normal for people on here it doesn’t mean it should be used as reassurance. This is not normal for you if it only started a few months ago.

Thesystemisbroken · 11/11/2024 22:23

Fakinguntilyoumakeit · 11/11/2024 20:48

Thank you. I'm pleased you have said ewcm, I don't want to be graphic, but I get a lot of that. And it can be blood tinged as well. Did it stop? I have wondered if it is a form of endometriosis, I read sometimes cysts can develop and then heal themselves.

I have these symptoms and some pain during sex and I have spotted afterwards.

I'm 34.

I was diagnosed with adenomyosis and looked like I could have endo but wasn't clear enough to diagnose. It hasn't made a difference having the label other than less worry about what's going on.

Painful though 😭

UnimaginableWindBird · 11/11/2024 22:19

Like several other posters, this started for me in my mid-late thirties after the birth of my second child. Very occasionally, the bleeding is quite heavy. Usually it's just light spotting/streaky EWCM. I had a smear test and a scan of my ovaries and it was all fine.

Greenkindness · 11/11/2024 22:13

I had this and it was a polyp. I was seen really quickly, they took it seriously.

WhatMe123 · 11/11/2024 21:57

Please check. Mid cycle bleeding was my sign of abnormal cervical cells don't just assume it's ovulation 😁

BeardieWeirdie · 11/11/2024 21:52

My mid-cycle bleeding was caused by polyps. Once they were removed, I finally managed to get pregnant. Also had three ovarian cysts removed under open surgery. Don’t ignore any weird bleeding.
