Shouted at by male midwife mid panic attack

Hi all,

Yesterday, I attended the Early Pregnancy Unit for a suspected miscarriage. Due to complex PTSD from a violent sexual assault, I generally can't see male providers without prior notice, and sometimes only with my husband present in regards to female examinations. This has never been an issue. At my usual hospital, this is flagged on my chart to avoid misunderstandings and so I don’t need to explain. However, since I was bleeding, my midwife recommended I go to a closer hospital, where I’d been seen before (without any issues). I take it on board I should have mentioned it, however as I’d been seen before in the unit only a few weeks before and I’d only seen women providers. Again, I accept this was my mistake.

Unfortunately, when I entered the exam room, the midwife was male. I immediately panicked and explained that I didn’t know there would be a man present. He seemed visibly offended and dismissive, telling me to leave the room in an upset tone. Despite being visibly distressed and bleeding from a miscarriage, I ended up trying to comfort him by explaining my history. The situation escalated with him shouting at me, and none of the nurses intervened. They blocked the door and wouldn’t allow me to leave.

I was able to get out and to the reception, where I requested to speak to someone in charge so they could help. The male midwife followed me and continued shouting, saying I had verbally attacked him. He even told me to "get over myself" and shared that he also had a history of panic disorder. I felt utterly humiliated and helpless. Eventually, the lead midwife took me to a quiet room, but no one apologized or acknowledged his behavior.

What’s most upsetting is that during both a miscarriage and after sharing my trauma history, I was shown no compassion or sensitivity by this midwife, which is the complete opposite of the amazing care I’ve always received from the NHS, especially during feminine examinations.

I’m considering filing a formal complaint, but I’m worried it won’t be taken seriously. I was later told that others on the unit are afraid of this man and won’t speak up. I went to PALS, and they advised I file a formal complaint with the hospital, but I'm unsure if it will actually lead to any action.

I’m not entirely sure what outcome I want to see, except that I believe the midwife should have shown more compassion in such a sensitive situation. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Will my complaint be taken seriously, and where is the best place to escalate it?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It really made me wonder why some men go into gynaecology

It's because it's a great career and one of the few you can work in both medicine and surgery. It's flexible and offers a good work-life balance. The ones I know love Caesarians in particular because they can schedule them in around their golfing timetables. 😬

Such an old fashioned view . Surgeons and OBSTETRICIANS work a punishing schedule in a very litigious field and the majority are dedicated and professional. This is not to undermine the OPs terrible experience which needs to be shared and escalated with the hospital concerned.

How do you know the majority are dedicated and professional. Do you speak to them all?

Again I never said anywhere that I looked at all doctors suspiciously because of their speciality.

I said that I met one gynaecologist who talked about being a gynaecologist, in my opinion, in a sexual way.

And it subsequently made me question why some men go into the area.

Yes we can move on

As a doctor I try and give colleagues the benefit of the doubt. But I will always remember that the two creepiest and slimiest blokes from medical school went into gynae. I am not saying that all gynaecologists are creeps, but there is an element who will be attracted to that speciality. Just gross.

Not so much in obstetrics though I have found.

There's been some depressing threads on Mumsnet before highlighting how some men are attreacted to midwifery etc for the wrong reasons:

In the middle of all this, there is a woman who has suffered a miscarriage yesterday. People need to bear this in mind before quizzing her pointlessly.

Thanks for your contribution.

That's very interesting - that the two creepiest men in your medical school went on to be a gynaecologist.

A male midwife is an actual woman midwife. You can request a female if it offends you but you can't just expect them to not exist. What is a TIM?

What a horrible thing to say! Why can't men love caring for children like women do?

Fathers love their children why wouldn't some of them ljust love caring for and playing with other children too? Or should they be questioned for enjoying caring for and playing with their own children?

Being gentle and nurturing are not solely female traits. Society can't complain that teaching and caring roles are low paid, undervalued etc. and women's work is unimportant then declare something a woman's only profession and van men from working in it in it the same breath. Society will never Ben equal whilst it is divided on prejudice.

I meant a male midwife is an actual midwife.

I still don't understand what a TIM is, I assume its a transphobic slur.

AnotherEmma · 17/10/2024 18:09

I think TIM is trans-identifying male. But this thread is not about that.

Midwife means "with woman" so you can get male and female midwives.

Anyway, back to the point of the thread...!

Carriemac · 18/10/2024 08:48

@Mrsdoyler I work with a large team including male obstetricians and gynaecologists and yes the majority are dedicated and professional and hardworking. But of course there will be bad ones and they should be absolutely complained about and removed from practice . I'm just saying just because a man chooses this profession it doesn't make them creepy.
However
I would refuse a male midwife and I only see female dentists ( bad experience as a child with male dentist under anaesthesia)

PadstowGirl · 18/10/2024 08:57

Good God, that is awful. I'm so sorry for your loss and that you went through all this as well.
I know that the male nurses I work with ALWAYS give female patients the option of seeing a female HCP. There is absolutely no offence taken if the patient chooses a female nurse.
Please do complain.

Whereas the ones I know went into it purely for the money 🙄. An abundance of very profitable private work!

IhaveanewTVnow · 18/10/2024 17:30

Some of the posters on this thread should be ashamed of themselves. They way they have responded to a woman who has just suffered a miscarriage.

Why are so many defending an abusive man? We all have the right to same sex care. I don’t care about men’s feelings when it comes to protecting my female friends and family. so what if she shouted at him? I’m sure we have all dealt with worse in our jobs. Any caring man would have immediately stepped back and walked out of the room. Just disgusting. St George’s and the staff there should be ashamed of themselves and I hope some are disciplined. I’m sure they won’t. It’s all about protecting the menz.

It doesn't make sense now the post PP was responding to has been deleted, but it did make sense with context. No need for the confused faces. Read it as 'a male midwife is an actual midwife for women'

I wouldn't want a male midwife myself.

It would be very legally hard to stop men from entering any profession though wouldn't it.

You can request not to be treated by a male midwife that's no problem and is your right, but you can't demand they don't exist.

Yes I also only see female dentists, after a bad experience with a male dentist.

Yup me too!
It's actually ridiculous the effort I have to go to due to the abusive behaviour of men. Male dentist didn't even sexually assault me or anything but he was shit and pushy and ignored my pain which was in itself triggering of prior abuse.
