Kids screaming in garden next door!

WorkHardPlayHard1 · 01/06/2023 11:17

So for the 5th time this Spring/Summer, the kids next door are playing happily and very loudly in the garden next door directly into the open door of my kitchen.

I really like the adult neighbours (their parents) and really don't want to fall out with then.

Any suggestions of how to approach this as can't bear the idea of a full Summer of screeching kids! They are 10 and 7! 😬

@thelinkisdead oh no the 😘 faces are out, my opinion must really be rattling you! I said nothing about you banning them from talking loudly. You said that screaming is absolutely not allowed and that talking loudly is fine 'at times'. I can only go by what you've commented? 😂 It's not my job to read between the lines.

Anyway, I'd rather sit there and listen to kids playing happily, talking loudly and even screaming right in my actual face than having to endure listening to you miserable and moaning lot whinging and whining.

GameChanger54321 · 02/06/2023 16:48

@Tiddler39 no, because her children are only allowed to talk loudly 'at times' - in their own garden. I feel that's harsh.

When kids are having fun, excited and happy, they laugh and talk loudly, that's only natural surely? as most adults do too.

Sorry I forgot you know all about my kids’ garden behaviour 😂 Maybe I just have better kids than you? I don’t remember saying I have banned them talking loudly, but there is an enormous difference between screaming and normal, excitable kid conversation. Mine are pretty calm kids who get on well with each other playing nice games, but I guess we can’t all be perfect 🤣😘

HauntedPencil · 02/06/2023 17:11

Why are people going on and on about incessant screaming from the OP when it's five times. If this was a different thread about kids that went out at the crack of dawn and literally screamed all day, then obviously, people's responses would be different

As a PP listening to kids fighting screaming and crying is a different issue. These kids, as per the OP are playing. Happily, yet noisily. My neighbours have visitors right now and are out there I've got my doors open and I can hear them. Shall I go out and hose them down? Scream?

FIVE times this year. MY LORD.

@thelinkisdead I don't know how children talking loudly in their own garden, during the day, when they've already been banned from any sort of screeching/screaming and kicking their balls against the wall isn't slotting into society? From my view they're going above and beyond as children to keep it lovely for the adults.

Children are only children for a few years. Talking loudly imo isn't unacceptable behaviour when they're just having fun and in an outside space.

Lots of trades people are employed! Lots of building companies employ people.

you can think and IMO all you like, but I doubt you’ll get anywhere with either home cinemas or radios.

it’s certainly not noise pollution as the PP said.

What I meant by employed was that they would be accountable to someone, rather than self-employed.
You're right of course, people will and do listen to radios loudly in their gardens.
Fortunately no one around me has a home cinema!

Oh I see - I took your comment out of context (you have to click on 'See more' to see the full quote history, which is sometimes ridiculously long).

I understand now, though I'm inclined to agree, it's annoying enough (though something you just have to accept) if your neighbours are having work done, but to listen to (usually terrible) radio for the duration is anti-social IMO. I am sure if tradespeople are employed there would be something in their contact that states their work should cause minimal disturbance to others.

Home cinema - I agree. In a build up area, not all your neighbours should have to listen to you and your mates watching Dirty Dancing.

I live in an area where most people have children so it’s often noisy. Yes, kids (including) mine do occasionally screech and scream. That is fine. A house a few doors down has 2 small children who make horrendous noise. They’re screechy and they squeal and wail when they’re fighting and let me tell you, they are often bloody fighting and crying! It’s pretty horrible to listen to. I wouldn’t dream of complaining or saying anything but it is very irritating.

I know that OP hasn’t posted since her first post? What’s the relevance of that?

I was talking about the poster that I’d previously tagged and answering a subsequent message.

That poster was moaning about

Children
Adults
tradesmen

saying it was noise pollution and could cause I’ll health.

I understand perfectly, but this particularly poster is whinging about everyone……. She’s the common denominator and not sure noise pollution is caused by people enjoying their gardens.

OP has not posted anything more than her first post, which mentions screaming and screeching (also that they're happy and it's only the 5th time this season), from her immediate neighbours, not everyone.

If you bother to look at my quotes, you’ll see who I meant.

Do you not understand the difference between reasonable vs unsociable enjoyment of your garden?

Children playing (laughing, some shouting, some arguing) - OK
Children screeching endlessly so that neighbours cannot hear themselves talk in their own garden - not OK

Lawn mowing, DIY projects - OK
Regular bonfires at a time when people are enjoying the weather, hours of leaf blowing/pressure washing/drilling - not OK

Having people round to enjoy a BBQ - OK
People having drunken karaoke at 3am - not OK

Your poor kids

Because she sets boundaries about screaming?

coeurnoir · 02/06/2023 12:34

Blort · 01/06/2023 14:26

Kids that age can play without screaming. Mine like to make a lot of noise but pipe down if i remember to tell them.

I wouldn't mind a neighbour saying something nice to them about not needing to scream when out in the garden.

Mine are grown up now but, like all kids, could get carried away sometimes. The difference was that we always brought them in if they started getting too loud and disturbing people.

We were also happy for our neighbours to tell them to put a sock in it as well.

I just don't get this new approach to parenting whereby the children have all the rights to make as much noise as they want and it is the adults who have to inconvenience themselves. It makes me worry for what society will be like when those children become adults.

Im only 50 and I am not, and was not, a perfect parent by any means...but when my children and their friends, my friends children etc were young...only 20 years ago....we were very much aware of our children needing to learn how to behave in order to fit into society and not that society (adults) have to bend to their will.

Two options spring to mind.

Shut your door.

Kill them.

😂

Oh dear…. We must all be silent in our garden, not have work done, not use the garden, I wonder why they even sell BBQs?

The sound of people enjoying their garden reasonably in the summer is not noise pollution. I have every sympathy for people i during proper anti social noise but can we get a grip on this one which is a property with a good neighbour relationship and kids that have played out five times the whole season to date.

Complaining about everyday noise is also a form of harassment often used and can be detrimental to others mental health.

You consider incessant screaming to be 'enjoying their garden reasonably'?

Billyho · 02/06/2023 12:07

lieselotte · 02/06/2023 08:41

Yeah well the adults who want to make sure the whole street can hear their party are annoying too.

As are the tradesmen with their loud music.

As for garden cinemas...

Noise pollution is a significant problem, and can cause health problems. Just have a little consideration and keep the noise down.

You would really hate us. Our 4 kids play out most days and can be quite noisy. If the neighbours asked me to make them keep it down I would probably encourage music instruments in the garden for the next few days. Give them something to actual moan about.

You don't think a bit of consideration for your neighbours is a reasonable thing to ask for, @DinoDaddy? I don't think most people expect kids to play silently in the garden - and as I said earlier on the thread, I enjoy hearing the happy noise of kids playing outside - but I don't think it is unreasonable to think we can all treat our neighbours with consideration - and sometimes that means keeping the noise level (whether from kids, music etc) at a reasonable level.

Or do you truly think that you and your children can do whatever you and they want, however loudly you want, and fuck the rest of the world - because that is a pretty poor bit of parenting, if you do.

Absollutely agree. Dinodaddy you are the abosulte wanker of a parent that allows your children kick the bag of airplane seats too :)

I got deleted for the first time in years this week for saying something much milder than that - the person I was talking to must have complained.

He does sound, as I said, like the parent you don't want to live next door to.

AlexaM86 · 02/06/2023 10:10

You have my sympathies OP, we have the same situation. Reasonable noise is fine but when it's all day and it's shrieking and screaming it's bad parenting.

We don't complain to our neighbours, but having just renovated our garden, we're planning to have frequent parties and will expect the same level of discretion from them. Heaven help them if they knock on our door complaining about the noise from our guests at 9pm on a weekend because their kids are in bed...
