Kids screaming in garden next door!

WorkHardPlayHard1 · 01/06/2023 11:17

So for the 5th time this Spring/Summer, the kids next door are playing happily and very loudly in the garden next door directly into the open door of my kitchen.

I really like the adult neighbours (their parents) and really don't want to fall out with then.

Any suggestions of how to approach this as can't bear the idea of a full Summer of screeching kids! They are 10 and 7! 😬

I have adults next to me who shout and screech for most of the day and night, it starts at around 11am and goes on til past midnight. They have their back door and windows open in all weathers so the sound carries to my home, so you have my sympathies. With children I would expect noise, in fact the other side of me have two little ones and I enjoy hearing them laugh and play. They are little so they cry too at times, again this just wafts over my head. It is adults who get to me, they really should know different and be capable of having consideration for others. I use earplugs or have the radio on, when it is really bad I go into the front of my house to escape. I try very hard to be a considerate neighbour, keep my TV at a reasonable volume, use the hoover no earlier than 9am and no later than 8pm, I don't play my music loud. Sadly many people only think of themselves.

LadyJ2023 · 01/06/2023 12:36

I guess it depends at what level the noise is. But we have 4 that play in the garden most days its fine and if they were screaming and screeching I would have something to say to them. Luckily they don't and play quite well.

Move up here to Yorkshire. It's fucking freezing and absolutely NOBODY is out in their garden, screaming or otherwise.

It's lovely and quiet. But freezing.

What person?

Everyone has to be considerate of each other. Who raises their children to scream regardless of other people in other gardens?

Quite a few people on this thread, from the looks of things.

ClaudiaWankleman · 01/06/2023 12:34

Move. Children can play in their garden however they want at 11am.

reesewithoutaspoon · 01/06/2023 12:33

there's a difference between normal child play sounds of laughing, and calling out or the occasional scream if someone gets splashed with water and incessant screeching and shrieking for no apparent reason. It's like nails down a blackboard.

Shut your door maybe?

They are kids, playing in their own garden in nice weather, dont be that person Hmm

Theyre school aged so theyre not constantly in their garden are they?
Shut the kitchen door stop focusing on them. Listen to music thru earphones or get noise cancelling headphones.

Failing that, move to a child-free street/rurally if social noise bothers you that much.

Why is it always the person being inconvenienced who's expected to make all the accommodations on this type of thread??

Wow. Kids doing what kids do. In their own garden. FIVE times this year.

Terrible.

Actually they don't need to scream and screech to play. They can talk, laugh and giggle without screaming. I can't bear the awful screaming that children do in the playground. Not necessary.

SpeckledlyHen · 01/06/2023 12:28

bringincrazyback · 01/06/2023 12:25

But at one time kids were perfectly capable of having fun playing outside and making some noise, bit of shouting/loud laughter etc, without the shrill prolonged screaming a lot of today's kids seem to indulge. I was never allowed to do that as a child, I don't think my friends were either as I don't seem to remember them screaming, and before anyone says it no I didn't have a repressed, draconian or Victorian upbringing, I simply wasn't allowed to scream. And, shock horror, I was able to have a lovely time playing outside with my friends without any of us screaming at all. Who knew?

I honestly don't understand people on here who defend that awful screaming as 'just kids having fun' as though screaming was a necessary part of playing. It's not.

Absolutely this. My ex neighbours were screamers. Screamed and screamed all day long.

bringincrazyback · 01/06/2023 12:27

Apart from anything else, if kids constantly scream when they play out, how's anyone supposed to be able to tell if one day the screaming signifies that a child is in danger?

SpeckledlyHen · 01/06/2023 12:26

Just the thought of this makes me go all shaky. I moved house due to a family of screechers moving in next to me. They proceeded to install full size bouncy castle for all year use, a swimming pool, hot tub, trampolines etc and invited most of their school friends after school and every weekend for a screeching session. Mainly girls who screamed at the top of their lungs. It was not "normal" household noise. Despite having a detached house, in a rural location with a very large garden due to them being so loud I could hear them over the TV with windows shut. I didn't venture into the garden for about 3 years as even noise cancelling headphones didn't drown them out. Lockdown was hell on earth.

I ended up selling my forever home that I had spent £££'s renovating. When I did due diligence on the next house I ensured there would be no neighbours who could affect me in the same way.

OnlyOpenMouthToChangeFeet · 01/06/2023 12:26

Would love to know if you find the answer?!!

My neighbours have only been here a couple of years, ones before were great, and everyone else in our cul-de-sac very considerate. But 'new' neighbours have 2 girls aged around 8 and 10, and all they seem to do is shriek and scream outside. It can start at 5am when weather nice, and go on for hours each day.

My problem is I'm disabled and bed bound, and conditions quite unpredictable. My pain levels may mean I can't sleep for days, or only sleep at certain times, and I'm constantly being woken by screaming. Unfortunately when the children scream, the parents yell over the top of them to shut up and I rarely get any peace. I constantly overheat, and like to have my bedroom window open for the air even in winter, but can't even do that now.

It's seriously driving me nuts and bringing me down, which is having a knock on effect on my health.

Carer has tried a polite word, but seems no-one else matters. And if it's not screaming and shouting, it's his bloody motorbike. 😞

Theeora · 01/06/2023 12:25

We've just moved. It's become apparent the bit of grass opposite my house is where the very young kids in the village like to congregate and play. For some reason I just can't get worked up about the noise (I probably know deep down this is karma for my own behaviour as a youngster).

Shut the door. Put some music on. Remind yourself that you were a child once and you too enjoyed having fun at some point...

DuchessOfSausage · 01/06/2023 12:24

I can sympathise @WorkHardPlayHard1 .
My neighbour has a daughter and she voices all her play - talks to her dolls and explains what each one is doing. Very loudly.

A little boy several doors away calls out his sister name repeatedly and it's a name with several similar-sounding syllables, so much that both the mother and his sister have told him to stop. I hate the sister's name now.

NDN's DCs used to kick a football against the wooden fence, and it was bang-bang-bang can I have my ball back please all day every sunny day.

There is playing and playing.

Katiesaidthat · 01/06/2023 12:23

Can´t get wound up about this. Sorry. If on the other hand it was at night, you would have my sympathies. During daytime it is one of the sounds to be expected.

Atticus999 · 01/06/2023 12:22

Move?

Pottedpalm · 01/06/2023 12:22

I love the sound of children playing but the constant screaming is a different thing.
On a recent trip to a very large Sainsburys a child was screaming at the top of her lungs. Not crying. Not shouting. Literally screaming. When I got to the checkout there she was, still screaming. Aged about five or six, in school uniform, with a younger sibling who added in their own scream. It was ear piercing. I tried my best teacher stare and she made eye contact but carried on. I really wanted to say something but mother didn’t look like someone to be reasoned with. Checkout operative heaved a sigh of relief when they left. Child still screaming in car park ad I left..

GladitooktheHighRoad · 01/06/2023 12:21

If we are actually talking about constant screaming!!! then ask your neighbours for the kids to stop constantly screaming.
I suspect it’s just kids playing.
so
Shut the door.

bringincrazyback · 01/06/2023 12:20

Kids screaming and screeching at the top of their voices is simply not necessary. There is a different between that and what I would consider normal noise. And there is certainly no need for it to go on for hours

Exactly this.

GameChanger54321 · 01/06/2023 12:15

@theemmadilemma 😂 ohhh yes of course that's what I do! Me and DH also join them in the garden and we all just stand their screaming for hours it's our favourite past time.

Mariposista · 01/06/2023 12:15

Jagoda · 01/06/2023 11:18

Two options spring to mind.

Shut your door.

Kill them.

Or get a powerful hosepipe and 'just miss' when you water your garden 20 times a day.

Bluebells1970 · 01/06/2023 12:15

Stand outside and scream yourself.

It's very effective.
