Dog friendly supermarket

What's the dog doing wrong,exactly? Fingering ,squashing fresh fruit and veg with filthy hands? Opening boxed items and discarding the contents over the shelves?Opening alcohol perhaps and drinking it?being abusive to staff and other customer's?stealing your purse?shop lifting?...oh no that's all human stuff who are clearly better behaved than an innocent dog.

Generally speaking in the UK supermarkets are not dog friendly. So YANBU. I do like taking my small dog places with me but he's small enough that if I feel it's not safe for him I can just pick him up and keep him out the way of trollies etc. Silverburn being dog friendly was very exciting and we did take him along, in reality however most of the shops were not dog friendly and me and DH had to take turns standing outside shops with him. We'll stick to the fort which is outside.

Sounds less irritating that the families of 5 often filling the aisles in our local supermarket

I think it’s a trend that’s likely to continue. Retailers/ hospitality etc see this is a market to tap in to. Hotels that not only allow dogs but have dog beds and welcome treats and a dog menu! Retailers know that fewer people want to leave their dogs alone these days ( probably due to upsurge in dog theft and pets being used to being with owners from lock down / wfh.) they know they have to remove the barriers to people physically being able to shop in person. Welcome their precious ones and you’ve found the way to their heart and their wallet! I think it’s here to stay to be honest it’s too big a market now. Dogs are like family members to many these days.

Yanbu but seems to be a lost cause, they’re everywhere now and it seems to be unacceptable to not want them everywhere

Our local garden centre allows dogs in. Fine. But is isn't just a garden centre, it has a restaurant, a café, a big toy section, homeware section and clothes section, and people take their dogs through all of it. I saw a dog cocking it's leg on some clothing once and it was so gross. Owner was oblivious. I've also seen a dog in the restaurant licking the floor, seat, side of table, owner was aware and was laughing, saying how she's "so greedy". It just isn't hygienic to have dogs in these sorts of places. Let alone supermarkets. Plus, unfair on the staff who then presumably have to clean up after other people's dogs. I have dogs, and love them, but I don't take them everywhere I go, because it's just not necessary.

Completely inappropriate. Dog allergies are very common and can be severe for some people. Having them around food when they're not trained to a level where they definitely won't get saliva on a product is risking peoples health. Equivalent to wiping any other allergen on food packaging without warning.

Obviously not including working dogs.

I feel exactly the same, I don't want dogs in areas where there's food. I like them but choose not to have one yet they're basically everywhere & YABU if you don't welcome them it would seem.

Legally, because of the proximity to fresh food, dogs aren’t allowed in the open-air markets, grocery stores and boutique food shops. Check for the “no dogs” sign

For everyone saying "he isnt jumping up licking the food" how do you know? Are you watching? Is anyone? Dog allergies are serious there is no need for a dog to be there

Also my son is scared of dogs not all dogs he likes the ones he has been introduced to he even helped walk one the other day! But when confronted with a strange dog approching him recently he ran into the road I had to yank him out and force him to walk past the dog he was making distressed squeaking noises the dog was attracted to the noise the owner could see I was struggling and approached me WITH THE DOG to berate me for having a child who was scared of her fucking dog ds was dragging me back towards the busy road trying to get away I pointed out she wasn't being helpful asked her to back off she kept insisting her dog was fine I said DS isn't and he will attack BACK OFF PLEASE

Allowing well behaved dogs and owners in lead to not well behaved dogs and their owners coming in

Yep, other countries manage just fine allowing dogs in everywhere. It's a dog, not a tiger.

Only service dogs in shops not any Tom Dick or Harry dog, I would have found an assistant, asked for the manager and complained, loudly. The problem with the UK is that it doesn't like 'confrontation' and everyone has 'needs' for some reason or another - it's getting worse and worse.

If the shop allows it and it makes commercial sense then it’s really none of your business what she is doing. If you don’t like it shop elsewhere.

What happens if a dog cocks it's leg and pees over the food? Or it fancies a nibble of food? Or gets injured BTA shopping trolley?

YANBU. I have a dog but certainly wouldn’t be taking her into a supermarket. It’s completely inappropriate even if the dog is well behaved as others will begin to do the same with dogs who will not be so well behaved. It’s not the place for them.

There are plenty of badly behaved and dogs out in public who’s owners don’t seem to give a toss, and they don’t need to be allowed into supermarkets.

No dogs should not be allowed in shops unless they are service dogs.
Has nobody every been stood near a wet dog when it shakes? Mud, water, slobber flies everywhere I don't want that on the food/clothes/goods I am buying.

Glad to report that a shopping centre near Glasgow has stopped allowing dogs in after customer feedback during a trial period. Some disgusting owners were not cleaning up after their dog. Indoors!!!!! They let their dog shit indoors!!!! I'd wipe the owners' faces in it, not the dogs fault. Manky gets.

It depends on what you are doing, full monthly shop no dogs should be at home. Been on a dog walk and want a pint of milk I could happily take ours in. Could it be a therapy or guide dog in training OP? Not all of them like to wear a bib

Not appropriate and unnecessary. Why take a dog to the supermarket? It’s probably very stressful for the poor thing. Much as I love my lot, they’re quite happy at home.
