Dog friendly supermarket

Yesterday at about 11.45 I went to ALDI Hatfield and saw a dog in there.
It didn’t appear to be a service dog - no obvious jacket or peas stating so. The lady with the dog was very loud in praising the dog so wasn’t even trying to be discreet. The dog was spaniel size, looked like a Tibetan terrier to me. By the time I saw them they were at the checkout then a few minutes later they were walking around again as it looked like the lady had forgotten something.

AIBU to think the staff shouldn’t have allowed this. I love dogs but this was completely inappropriate.

If there was a common culture of hygiene expectation in the UK, dogs outside of Guide Dogs in the majority of buildings outside of the home wouldn't even be be a thought, much less a thing. I volunteer in a charity shop that foolishly lets people bring their dogs in, sniffing the clothes.

I already told my boss that if a dog soils, not to even blink my way to expect me to clean up piss and shit, because that isn't a part of my contract.

It takes a certain type of nasty person to take their dog to the supermarket, shops, pubs and cafes without the dog being a guide dog.
But seeing as there is nearly as much dog shit on streets as there was in the days when stray dogs were common, there is obviously a recurring hardcore of entitled dog owners in this nation.

The misanthropes hating on children and preferring to see dogs in supermarkets are making me laugh, though. The lack of self awareness is strong and long as if they were born as old as they are and never got on anybody's nerves as children.

Getting on somebody's nerves is Childhood 101!

Yep, other countries manage just fine allowing dogs in everywhere. It's a dog, not a tiger.

It was inappropriate as it’s a supermarket. The dog was excitable and zigzagging as the lady was walking along the aisle.

I have a dog and wouldn’t even consider taking her in a supermarket.

ZUT ALORS!! Not zigzagging 🙄🙈🙉🤦🏻‍♂️

I always tell supermarket staff when there is a dog in there and they always go and tell the selfish arsehole with the dog to leave. We need to keep doing this, abd raise it with their head office to ensure any supermarket with door staff stop the dogs from entering in the first place.
So unsanitary.

You clearly only shop at Booths or Waitrose because there's some unsanitary people in my local Asda. Can we ban them too please ?

I've seen dogs in wilkos and H&M this week.

I’d far sooner have a dog walking on the floor of a supermarket than some pathetic parent letting their children sit in the trolly with their filthy sh1t soled shoes..especially now that a lot of supermarkets expect shoppers to put fruit & veg into trolley without bags. If the child’s small then sit it in the trolley seat. If it’s older it can walk! I’m on Team Dog!

You’re aware trolleys are clean regardless of children sitting in them right?

Rats crawl all over them, birds shit on them, and they are never properly cleaned. So you shouldn’t be putting unbagged food in there anyway.

I’d much rather see dogs in Aldi than the badly behaved shrieking kids that always seem to be there when I’m shopping. I was getting really stressed in there this morning with families blocking the aisles, kids literally screeching at the tops of their voices (parents totally oblivious apparently), and kids who were playing hide and seek which involved racing around and knocking things over ffs!
Seeing a dog would have cheered me up, and made the whole experience a lot less fraught.

I have a dog. I love my dog

I would not take him to a supermarket. I don't even take him to the pet shop unless I am feeling brave!

It might have been one of those therapy dogs . Some places ask for a covering letter but they don't need a jacket stating so . My friend has a therapy dog it's a tschitzu. It goes everywhere with her

What is a therapy dog in your friend's case?

Far too many people are claiming their dogs are some kind of assistance or therapy dog despite it being no more than a pet with a hi viz jacket off eBay.

Someone I met has unstable diabetes. Her constant companion is a specially trained dog which can detect a problem (by scent) before she does and alert her.

Then surely they would have had an assistance dog harness on.

But how can supermarkets ensure that only 'good' dog owners bring their dogs inside? They can't really discriminate so better to disallow all dogs

They can't, but if all owners were responsible they wouldn't need to.

It’s not an anti dog thread. I have a dog, a cockerpoo, I just don’t think dogs should be allowed in supermarkets. I also wonder if this is just happening in ALDI Hatfield or other supermarkets too.

In Glasgow Silverburn shopping centre has just halted a trial of being dog friendly, it was already fairly unpopular but dogs were unsurprisingly fouling & after an incident in the food courts where owner didnt clean up the mess they've finally decided to stop it. There had already been complaints from cleaning staff that they were having to deal with this.

It's bad enough having badly behaved kids in supermarkets, there's no need for dogs as well. And annoying though some kids are, they don't usually wee in the aisles

Bloody scooters, though. Despite the notice on the door saying no scooters.
