I have a dog too and I wouldn’t bring them in a shop/supermarket I only been to pet stores with them

Why? I love dogs (one of mine is snoring on the sofa beside me, the other has plonked herself at my feet) but I don't think mine should be allowed everywhere even though they are well behaved, gentle with children and pretty clean.

Christ, I worked in a supermarket, you should be more worried about the state of the humans that go in them and work in them touching everything than a dog that just walks around minding it's own.... then there's the rats and mice that live in almost every supermarket warehouse!

Two wrongs don't make a right. Children have a legal right to be pretty much everywhere in society. Dogs do not.

Random meetings with random dogs owned by random owners in an enclosed space where you can't see round the corners is not the place to desensitise a phobic child. (same with dog reactive dogs).

The mass hysteria over the hygiene of dogs baffles me.

I have never in fact had any infestation of parasites upon my body from a dog - I have caught nits and impetigo and ringworm from children.

I have witnessed children licking filth off the ground, sticking fingers down their own bumcracks (well down their pants) or in dirty nappies and smearing it everywhere and licking their fingers, ditto fingers up noses.

I have witnessed children pissing and shitting in public places including in shops.

I have found dirty nappies left in public places by parents.

I have seen kids handling fresh foods and putting them back (or parents taking them and putting them back) with obviously filthy hands.

Please tell me how dogs are dirtier again?

Ive seen children grabbing food and taking a bite and parents who put that fruit/vegetable back when they notice it.
Dogs are at least on leads and more under control.
Obviously if they arent well behaved they shouldnt be there, but where I live dogs are allowed everywhere and the misbehaving ones are the minority, because people usually leave those at home.

True. I work in a vets and clueless people stand watching their entire male dogs sniffing at the side of the doorway on the way in, the corner of the reception desk, the shelves with food bags on and the legs of the consult table ALL THE DAMN TIME, then express surprise (if they even notice at all) when the dog naturally lifts its leg.

We're usually on the ball to point out the pre-pissing behaviour so the owner can stop it, or at least handy with a mop, blue roll and disinfectant spray, but some of this is inevitable. We're also very handy at knowing which dogs need to be kept away from other dogs and doing dog tetris to keep everyone safe.

A increasing, ever changing throughput of dogs down narrow supermarket aisles with loads of vertical surfaces and owners whose attention is on what fabric softener they want to buy is a recipe for piss splatters everywhere.

Plus as previously noted, it's not fair on people with allergies. Fine to have some pet friendly pubs and cafes, especially if people have a choice of dog free ones, but not essential shops.

It takes a certain type of nasty person to take their dog to the supermarket, shops, pubs and cafes without the dog being a guide dog

It is not really nasty when the owners of an establish allow dogs. The café I frequent is dog friendly. The staff always come and hi to visiting dogs, offer them treats and post their photos on their social media.
If me taking my dog to such a place makes me "nasty" then I dread to think what you think of actual nasty people.

I know a couple who were visited by environmental health because of the dog mess outside their property. They said they didn't have to clean it up because the land doesn't belong to them.

By the way, I'm seeing dogs way more here than in france.

I read somewhere (possibly mumsnet) that people bought dogs en masse in covid and now people feel they have to take them everywhere.

I have just moved north and am finding that there are many more people in my new region who do this than my old one. We went in a cafe by the sea, just about every other person had a dog.

Today we went to a local attraction which has a sandpit. A woman had her large dog sitting in the children's sandpit, so my children played with something else. Then we went to a garden centre and went inside to pay and the staff member had several dogs off the lead near the till - they were barking loudly and ran up to and linked my small ds. He was really surprised.

I think that it will reach saturation point as more and more people feel, well if everyone is doing it, it's ok, like with smoking, and there will come a time when there are so many that they all get banned.

Now, what to do about my neighbour's cat that keeps crapping on our lawn for my children to tread in....

Definitely not! Nothing against dogs but some of us are allergic. I’d really like to be able to shop without steaming eyes and nose thanks.

I get that dogs are cute but seems a bit crap for those who can’t be near them because of allergies or phobias.

Me too I was in Tesco one was in there then in 5he really busy changing rooms after a children's swim lesson I tried 9ver the thing several times .

Dogs should not be supermarkets! Apart from service dogs of course. I literally photo posted the other day about a dog pissing all over the floor in a cafe and the owners just giving it a wipe with a tissue instead of informing staff so it could be cleaned properly.

Pretty much. Dogs are dirty, people are dirty, supermarkets are pretty dirty as well (as anyone who's worked in one can attest), but most of the time dirt isn't going to do you any harm and isn't a problem.

When you put it like that, the dogs seem much more sophisticated than the kids

Dog culture gone mad. Imagine comparing children to beasts that eat shit, lick their genitals and roll in fox poo, and choosing to prefer dogs. I'm embarrassed for such people.

I think it's actually quite odd that people equate dogs with a festering cesspool of disease and germs, but it's your fellow shopper that hasn't washed their hands, after using the bathroom, coughing, sneezing (with flu/covid/noro) etc that touches the food/tills/doors/trolley handles that is going to cause you
to get sick!
