To be angry over a name

Barbie46 · 22/01/2023 19:55

My baby is 6 months old and we named her a very uncommon name that was special to us. Recently we met an old friend of my husband's, they are still in the same circle but not close friends anymore. He asked us the usual questions about a new baby including her name. He and his partner had a baby in the last few days and called their baby our daughters name.
He did not mention anything about her name when we told them it and I am feeling irrationally angry that they have used our daughters name.

Is it Balonz?

👏👏👏👏

Weirdly, mashing my mum and MIL names just makes them their own names still!

(Joyce and Grace)

My grandparent's bungalow was called "Olfre" after their names Olive and Fred

Ofred could work. Oh dear.

lifeinthehills · 22/01/2023 21:10

It's fine if the names work and come together well. I was just playing with my parent and PIL's names and one of my sons would literally be the name of a nut.

Just been working out what my 3 would be called.

DS 1 - So combo of Oliver and Fred = Olifred
DS 2 - Comb of Robert and John = robjoh
DD 1 - Combo of Amy and Nellie = Amynel

Quite like Olifred. almost sounds like a real name

Now my own DC have to name their first born Jenrow if a girl or Davhar if a boy

I know Leah who is constantly called Lee. I'm not sure the h helps.

DorisParchment · 22/01/2023 21:08

I was going to ask if it was pronounced Ren-Lee (like Kenleeeeee), but I see it’s Ren-Leah. In which case I think it needs an H.

Oysterbabe · 22/01/2023 21:08

Can't decide whether to call my next kid Pauny or Jenline.

Yabu
You don't own the name
They've as much right to call their child it as you do

DarkShade · 22/01/2023 21:06

IMAGINE if it turns out your friends' dads are called Renato and Leo...

siroodlesofnoodles · 22/01/2023 21:05

Poor children.

There are so many beautiful names in the world to choose from and Renlea isn't one of them.

Reanne would have been marginally better.

notnownorma · 22/01/2023 21:04

Barbie46 · 22/01/2023 20:20

Her name is Renlea after her two grandmothers. Half of each name.

OK then. There's always deed poll.

Sarahcoggles · 22/01/2023 21:04

OP I think you'll need to put an H on the end because people will always pronounce in Renlee rather than Renlee-a

In a room full of mutual friends, "oh did you hear x and x had their baby and called her Renlea too ?"

Did they know you'd made it up based on two grandma names?!?! If they knew that and still used it then that's just creepy!

I'd be rather annoyed and perhaps would send them a congratulations message but just say you are a little baffled that they used a name that you made up based on your daughters two grandmothers and perhaps it is pure coincide that their daughter also has grandmothers called X and Y!

I'm guessing this idea to combine family names started with Renesmee? That's what came to mind anyway. I wonder how many people played with that kind of idea?

Dh has a great aunt called Alrene. It was a combo of both parents names. Alfred and Irene. I thought it was quite cool!

DarkShade · 22/01/2023 21:03

@lifeinthehills I know at least 2 babies who were named from combinations like this! And yes, in both cases it was consciously because of Renesmee.

SpottyBalloons · 22/01/2023 21:03

Barbie46 · 22/01/2023 20:55

It's pronounced ren-leah. Grannies Renee and Leanne. But hey-ho !

Why didn't you include the h on the end? She'll forever be correcting people who pronounce it Ren-lee.

Charlize43 · 22/01/2023 21:03

It sound's a bit cheesy... Still, it's better than Brie.

EpicChaos · 22/01/2023 21:00

Well, if your child is the eldest, other people will know that the other couple copied off you, won't they?!

Lcb123 · 22/01/2023 21:00

Bit weird but there’s no intellectual property on kids names!

ShandaLear · 22/01/2023 20:59

SummaLuvin · 22/01/2023 20:12

How awful! Not just one, but two lovely little girls called Renesemee. The horror.

I always felt sorry for the actress Malandra Burrows. She was named after her dad, Malcolm, and her mum, Sandra. I

In your case, they clearly liked it so much they named their own baby after yours. That’s kind of cute.
