And what's your reasons? Just had a crazy idea to move over as I don't have any commitments here and life is getting boring for me here

Australia is fine for a holiday, not to live there though I have known, and still know, people who went there and did well after not doing so well here. They love it.

I know plenty of Australians who have moved here and prefer it.

The lack of proper culture gets to you after a while.

You really haven't tried even a little bit, have you?

UK. Aus is too bloody hot, too bloody conservative and too bloody expensive for me.
The lack of proper culture gets to you after a while. The sexism is off the scale too. And racism.
Nice to do temporarily though. If you’re young, white and have a job sorted.

Lived in Oz 12 years and grew up in London. At first, weather seems better in Oz but sun can be brutal and bleaches all clothes, sunglasses essential or you will get cataracts- extremes of hot and cold in Sydney- London long summer evenings and able to walk without burning in the sun a blessing. Sydney, most developed in Oz, still no comparison to UK - restaurants, public transport, culture, friendly people. Add to terrible, terrible drivers in Sydney- no sense of road rules what so ever- slowest car will always block the fast lane, full of large brutally rude lorries, suffocating speed limits and full of hidden police- sterile driving experience especially if you have a nice European car.

AlfromLondon · 13/07/2026 19:02

It's not all rosy just because "UKs screwed"- be very careful as the grass is always greener on the other side- from personal experience. Driving in Sydney is terrible, you can not enjoy a sports car period- cameras and police everywhere, suffocating speed limits, >5kmph and you're screwed, pot holes and arse holes all over Sydney- I really miss driving in the UK

Well that’s my experience of 30 years in Australia @Aussiegirl123456 Your response perhaps makes my point.

Hardly, my response said ‘erm, yeah ok’, that proved absolutely nothing. “Diminishing anything remotely intellectual”, perhaps it was just the people you surrounded yourself with?

DOCTORCEE · 04/01/2023 10:32

I was bred and born in North London came to Australia in 2006 with my family and wouldn’t dream of going back to the UK.
It is important to assess the affordability aspect before making the leap though..I know quite a few migrants that haven’t been able to survive financially here and have been forced to return to the UK for that reason.
I note a lot of people are mentioning the snakes and spiders, they really aren’t a problem and as long as you are sensible (ie don’t go wading through long wet grass etc) they don’t bother you.
Healthcare provision is great here, and private school (if that’s your thing) is much more affordable.

I don’t mind people bashing Australia if it means those ignorant people don’t come here!

My experience of Australia is that it’s a harsh culture. Friendly yes, but with a rampaging talk poppy/envy culture and a diminishing of anything remotely intellectual or artistic.
Erm, yeah ok!

Keyansier · 03/01/2023 00:19

UK all the way. Can't stand Australia. Horrible weather, horrible accents, horrible animals, horrible lifestyle, horrible everything. Personally not for me, I'm afraid!

what's horrible about the lifestyle?

How long have you spent in Australia?

EasterIsland · 04/01/2023 09:56

I’ve lived all my life between the two countries, spending significant chunks of time - decades- in each. My experience of Australia is that it’s a harsh culture. Friendly yes, but with a rampaging talk poppy/envy culture and a diminishing of anything remotely intellectual or artistic. Ironically, I think this is why the arts and artists (of all media) are actually so good. They’ve really had to fight for doing their thing.

I prefer living in the UK and specifically England. I’m English by birth and culture. The landscape, the weather (even Sydney was too hot for me eventually) and the acceptance that the job I do, and the profession I work in, are important - world-leading, in fact.

But the ingrained class divide and the imbalance between London and everywhere else, and the weird mix of deference and “up yours” public unruliness and rudeness are baffling and distressing. We are a rich country but there are people in dire poverty, both poverty of resources and poverty of thought and aspiration.

No country is perfect. But UK migrants really need to understand that Australia is not just Britain with better weather. And I don’t even think the weather is better - give me north Lancashire January over a Sydney January any time! But my Sydney friends just think I’m eccentric.

My brother lives in Australia. He was talking about exactly the same problems as we are in the UK - increasing cost of living, increasing bills etc, so problems that people complain of in the UK are universal.

The whole world is facing problems, yes, and perhaps I'm wrong to predicate stuff on 'vibe' but Australia is still a young, optimistic country in comparison whereas a lot of UK infrastructure feels like it's about to break

There are some very mean minded ignorant commented coming from either side of this discussion. There are pros and cons to living in both places. Which is 'better' is a moot point. It's completely dependant on personal circumstances and interests which is better.

Agree. These threads just rile people up. And the op does t seem that interested anyway.

cantley · 04/01/2023 09:39

The ignorance displayed about Australia and the outright lies told as facts in these bashing threads never cease to amaze me.
If some of you want to stay permanently in the UK that's fine, but belittling another country and making things up about it to make yourself better about your own life choice borders on unhinged behaviour.
Other people born in the UK don't want to stay in the UK, why does this rattle you so much?

Australia is very cut off from the rest of the world

That might apply if you think "the rest of the world" is Europe. For any person in Oz, there is plenty of world nearby , like all the Asian countries and the Pacific Islands. I assure you that nobody in Oz thinks they are cut off from anywhere.

UK is a bit like the US where they think the world stops at their borders.

And yes we all sleep with anti venom drips in our arms for all the terrible snakes we have... So many I've never seen one in the wild in 40 years of being here. Where I live there is a high number of people from France and the UK who never plan to return.
But then most negative posters have never been here.

StClare101 · 04/01/2023 09:33

Whoops that was in response to Syd-Perth flights costing 1000 pounds return. Maybe, if you book last minute for Christmas, like every flight in the world….

StClare101 · 04/01/2023 09:32

Absolute rubbish.

BiL and family live in Australia.... they too talk about cost of living etc
Australia's inflation rate is 6.8%.... UK would die for that, they also haven't seen the massive rises in energy/fuel costs either.

What they don't talk about however, is never ending strikes and 4 day waits for ambulances or years waiting for a routine operation.

Having said all that... i'd prefer to live in the UK/Europe... probably an age thing?

Oh well there goes my name change, glad I didn’t post anything too personal yet. I’m GirlAnachro Blush
My point still stands tho, annoyed now I didn’t take a screenshot so I could post it as an actual fact to your blanket statement. Also, £1000 from one side of the country to the other? So ~$2000? Depends when you’re looking I guess, but a PP already did some research which quickly proved you wrong.

Endofmytetherfinally · 04/01/2023 06:22

Sorry but flights from Sydney to Melbourne are not 40 quid particula4ly post covid. You're lucky to get a return for 150 off peak and can easily be 300. Sydney to Perth is 1k plus. Pounds.

It’s laughable that you are trying to state this as a fact to me so when I was literally looking at flights to see my friend in Melbourne about 5 weeks ago and the cheapest one I found was $88 at about 5/6am on a Wednesday or Tuesday I believe. Obviously flight prices fluctuate, and raise over the holidays/seasons/ weekends v weekdays but you telling me something I saw with my own eyes is flat out wrong. “Sorry” Hmm

timetogetlost · 04/01/2023 08:24

Yes of course I understand that, but there are not so many countries sharing borders which are so easy to travel through. They are different countries with different merits, but I do believe the the UK's proximity to the cultural diversity of Europe is one of its plus points.

echt · 04/01/2023 08:21

timetogetlost · 04/01/2023 08:13

It's great that people are defending the cultural diversity within Australia, but surely that cannot compare to Europe, which has 50 countries and 24 official languages in a similar sized area. Next weekend I am in Slovenia for a weekend, where the landscape, foods, customs, language are very different to my own. I would miss being able to do things like that so easily.

It is not about comparing diversity, it is saying it even exists in Australia, which is so often trotted out. You do know there are countries outside Australia here they have different customs and languages, where Australian can like, go?

I'd give my right arm never ever to see another fucking thread running Australia down/telling lies/trotting out tired old cliches/ showing startling levels of ignorance.

It beats me why people are so interested.
