that children are not allowed to eat food in bedrooms or on sofas?! Does anyone allow their children to do this? as much as I tell my children they are not allowed food upstairs or on the sofa they ignore me and do it anyway. Aib u in thinking this is normal and most parents don't allow it.

Yes no meals on the sofa or upstairs but I would allow a piece of fruit or something snacky to be eaten on the sofa, but only the lounge leather sofa that could be wiped clean not the fabric sofas.

Butterflykissess · 03/06/2018 15:56

It's a fabric sofa. Mine will sit eating cookies on them then they are full of crumbs surely people can't be washing thei r sofas daily becAuse of food crumbs and stains?

All meals in this house are eaten at the table, snacks in front of the tv on the sofa. No food upstairs ever, I can cope with my daughter's being messy, untidy sods but won't allow potentially rotting/mouldy food into that mix :)

RiddleyW · 03/06/2018 15:54

We do no food except at the table mostly. Dry non crumbly snack are ok on the sofa but generally not. Mine is only 3 though! I assume he’ll be able to be trusted with toast on the sofa when he’s bigger!

NewYearNewMe18 · 03/06/2018 15:52

Depends on the age of the child - Im afraid if they are teenagers, good luck with policing their bedroom of illicitly bought pot noodles!!

With the sofa it depends on the food - hot meal - absolutely no way; banana not a problem.

bonnyshide · 03/06/2018 15:52

I've not heard this rule Grin

Derekmorganwasinmybed · 03/06/2018 15:51

We don’t have either of those rules, but all rubbish and plates need to be put away when finished

Blizzardagain · 03/06/2018 15:50

No food upstairs. Sofa is fine as DS is sensible. Plus we have no table, we can't all afford the space.

gamerwidow · 03/06/2018 15:50

I let my DD eat food on the sofa and on her bedroom on the proviso that all dirty plates and left over food gp to the kitchen as soon as she’s finished.
It doesn’t really matter what everyone else does though, it’s not an uncommon rule and if you don’t want them to do it then they shouldn’t.

e1y1 · 03/06/2018 15:50

YANBU, this is normal rule in my house too.

No eating in rooms or on the sofa. As one off treats, eg staying up on a holiday night watching a film in bed, I will allow it . Bit generally, no.

Slippery · 03/06/2018 15:49

Doesn't sound very homely. In fact it sounds a bit prissy. We've always eaten at the dining table, but occasionally eat on the sofa. Crisps, chocs etc at Christmas. What do you do then?

MrsHathaway · 03/06/2018 15:49

We have a "no food upstairs" rule. Food on the sofa depends on sensible eating of it.

Ignoring your rules is another issue and I agree with pps that this is the real problem.

Butterflykissess · 03/06/2018 15:49

Not sure what else to do though . They get told off but still ignore me.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 03/06/2018 15:49

Don't have either of those rules. DD is allowed to eat snacks/drinks in her room so long as she brings any rubbish down.

Do you make them sit on the floor for snacks instead of the sofa? Seems a bit draconian!

Pollaidh · 03/06/2018 15:49

It's the rule here. Only water and occasional cracker if ill, on the sofa. Everything else is eaten at the table.

You need to find a way to enforce it. If mine ask for food on the sofa they are told no food unless they are at the table. They give in.

newcupcake · 03/06/2018 15:48

I let them eat dry snacks on the sofa , very very occasionally a snack in their room if friends are playing etc and would always e sure no leftovers were found !

BertrandRussell · 03/06/2018 15:48

Depends what you mean by food. No meals on plates with gravy and so on. But a packet of crisps or an apple or something like that then yes of course.

Blobby10 · 03/06/2018 15:48

I had that rule when mine were growing up and they were very good (but we did make exceptions if they were ill or at Christmas!). Theres still a 'no food in the bedroom' rule which does, of course, mean I've never lost loads of plates, cups and cutlery in a teenagers bedroom Grin!!!!!

ReverseGiraffe · 03/06/2018 15:47

This is also the rule in my house after DD lodged food down the side of the sofa and then we found maggots Envy. Pretty normal rule imo.

FissionChips · 03/06/2018 15:46

Never heard of no food on the sofa rule,..probably because I have no kitchen table.
No food in rooms is a normal sensible rule .

NapQueen · 03/06/2018 15:46

I dont think your problem is what other parents do. Its that you say "no X" and they do X. Doesnt matter what individual rules are, just make sure you enforce the ones you do set.
