Am I horrible making ds walk for 40 mins to and from school because I want to avoid the bus?

OP posts:

Well that is quite a walk... Why do you want to avoid the bus?

Muntoru · Yesterday 16:48

How old is he?
what’s wrong with the bus?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · Yesterday 16:49

Depends on his age, the weather, how much he’s carrying, etc.

40 mins for a 5 year old is probably too much at the start of a school day

40min for a 10 year old should be ok - exercise in the morning is a great habit to get into

Batties · Yesterday 16:54

How old and why do you want to avoid the bus?

SlugJam · Yesterday 16:55

Would you be walking with him? How old is he?

IdaGlossop · Yesterday 16:58

If he's 11, no. My DD chose to walk 40 minutes, much if it uphill, rather than get the bus.

ToKittyornottoKitty · Yesterday 16:59

What do you mean that YOU want to avoid the bus? How old is he?

Sunbringer · Yesterday 16:59

I think it’s probably excellent for their health. Humans were designed to walk distances

You think the strangers kid should walk 40 minutes because your child willingly did it? Odd.

MigGirl · Yesterday 17:00

Well considering I had that sort of walk all through my primary school years, I think it's fine. I've still no idea how my mum manged to get 2 primary school kids home when we where tired at the end of the day.

There wasn't a easy bus route and it probably would have actually taken longer on the bus.

Yes you are

Yeah but if he’s 5 and it’s because his mum doesn’t like the bus then it’s a bit harsh reallly

SeptemberRains · Yesterday 17:01

What age is he?

laddersandsnakes16 · Yesterday 17:02

My 11 yr old son walks 30 mins to and from school. He has the choice to walk, ride his bike or walk just 10 minutes and get the school bus from the high street, and he chooses walking almost every day. So long as he’s old enough to walk it I think it’s fine. It’s good exercise, gives kids a bit of independence and takes away the reliance on being driven to school all the time.

allmycats · Yesterday 17:04

Why are you avoiding the bus ?
How old is your child ?
Answer these questions and you will get an informed answer.

Batties · Yesterday 17:05

OP, I see from your other threads that you have a really difficult time being around other people. Is that the reason you want to avoid the bus? If so, you have to do everything possible to avoid passing that social anxiety onto your DS.

forthelasttim · Yesterday 17:06

Thirty minutes in the morning would be fine but after a day in school I think you'd be carrying the child home. Forty seems a bit too long.

Have you thought about cycling? Most children can cycle a fair distance or could you have a child seat on your bike?

LauraNorda · Yesterday 17:06

One of the best things you can do for him.

It's 40 minutes less screen time and he is getting some exercise into the bargain.

Is it? She can take a pushchair for if he gets too tired. It’s 40 mins not 4 hours.

Thecomfortador · Yesterday 17:08

Secondary, no, we walked similar for 5 years. Primary, probably a bit far.

Or she could seek help for her problem, and get on the bus.

No, I don't. OP is worrying about being horrible to her son. I am trying to reassure her that 40 minutes is perfectly reasonable ie she is not horrible.

HappySummerFun · Yesterday 17:10

Surely if little kids don't want to walk because they're actually too tired, they just moan and don't walk. At which point, your options are to shout at them, coax them on by dangling snacks in front of them or carry them (and all their stuff).

Fine to give it a go, but if you're talking about a 40 minute walk for a reception child, you may end up regretting it when the walk takes double that time.
