Selecting the right swimming lessons for your child is a crucial step in their development of the skill. As parents, you’ll want to make sure your child not only learns essential water safety skills, but also develops a love for swimming.
There are, however, countless options available for parents across the UK. But which one is most suitable for your DC, their abilities and your family’s overall routine and timetable? With numerous options available, finding the right place for your child might be tricky. But with some planning and preparation (on your part) you’ll likely find the best swimming class for your child in no time.
Where can my child learn to swim in the UK?
Across the UK, there are a variety of places that offer swimming lessons for children of different ages. Schools, council-run leisure centres, franchised chains and private swim lessons are just four examples of locations where your child might learn to swim.
Schools must provide swimming lessons in Key Stage 1 or 2 in the UK, as swimming is the only statutory sport within the PE programme of study. Some parents might wait until school swimming lessons begin.
However, for those eager to get their child swimming from an earlier age, lessons are often available in their nearest local, council-run leisure centres, in franchised chains and even private health and wellness facilities, like Nuffield Health (that has 111 pools nationwide).
The different types of swimming lessons available
Your child’s age, abilities and accessibility needs will influence exactly what type of lessons your child best suits.
There are various formats available, most if not all are found in the above locations we’ve mentioned already. And almost all run lessons throughout the year for 50 weeks (with a two week break over Christmas in December). Each offers its own unique benefits:
Group lessons
At Nuffield Health, for example, your child can join group lessons - these are ideal for social learners, and are a cost-effective option. These are usually offered in 12-week packs, typically lasting 30 minutes. Except at Nuffield Health, Group Squad sessions run for 60 minutes.
Private, one-to-one lessons
For those who feel their child needs personalised attention, private lessons allow for faster progress and greater flexibility in scheduling. Available in packs of 4, 8 or 12 lessons at Nuffield Health swimming pools, they offer tailored instruction to meet individual learning needs.
Semi-private lessons (two-to-one)
Nuffield Health also offers a nice balance between group and private lessons for children. Semi-private sessions are great for siblings or friends learning together. Like private lessons, they are also available in packs of 4, 8 or 12 lessons.
