Best family villas in Portugal: where to stay from Lisbon to the Algarve, as recommended by Mumsnet users

Whether you’re seeking a sun-soaked city break or a brilliant base for a family holiday by the beach, here are the best places to stay for a villa holiday in Portugal, as recommended by Mumsnet users.

We test and research properties independently as well as seeking out tried-and-tested recommendations from our holiday forums. When you make a booking through a link on our site we may earn a commission.

With short flights from the UK, an enviable climate, beautiful beaches and friendly locals, Portugal is a popular destination for families and you’ll find a great selection of affordable accommodation options to choose from too.

Staying in a villa is perfect for families. Unlike a hotel where you all tend to share one room, a villa offers more of a home-from-home experience with plenty of space and privacy so your evening doesn’t end when the kids run out of steam.

A sensible choice for larger families and multi-generational holidays, villas can be far more cost-effective than booking multiple hotel rooms too. With well-equipped kitchens and cooking facilities, they provide complete flexibility for your family’s routine. And with many featuring private or shared pools and family-friendly facilities like games rooms and gardens, they make an ideal base for guests of all ages.

But where’s best to stay if you’re seeking a villa in Portugal? How do you find the best villa to suit your needs? We’ve tapped into tried-and-tested recommendations from Mumsnet users to bring you the regions and villas that pass muster when it comes to fun family holidays.

Best places to stay for a villa holiday in Portugal

1. Albufeira, Algarve

Why Mumsnetters love it

I've been to Albufeira several times and stayed in between old and new town. I really like it.turtlemurtle1982

We had a wonderful time! We hired a car and went to Tavira - an amazing town and recommend getting the little ferry to the island - beach and lots of lovely restaurants. Quateria also has a market on a Wednesday” bjonesreborn

We've been to Portugal a few times and we love it. Albuferia is aimed more at lively Brits. There's a long strip of bars and clubs. But the place is nice, especially Old Town.” Frankola

The largest resort in the Algarve, Albufeira’s bars and nightclubs on ‘The Strip’ prove popular with partygoers, hens and stags. Don’t let this put you off however, the bustling, lovely Old Town of Albufeira makes a wonderful base for families.

Just over a mile from the action, its cobbled streets and picturesque square lined with restaurants are drenched in history. We recommend a trip up the clock tower for stunning views across the crystal clear waters. Popular Praia dos Pescadores beach is a great place to paddle and spot fishing boats.

2. Vilamoura, Algarve

Why Mumsnetters love it

We love Vilamoura! This year was our 4th year of going and it feels like home from home now.” Dicdicnurse

Lovely marina, good beaches, good for access to other places if you want eg Albufeira (if you have transport).” TeddyTed

We used to take the kids to Vilamoura a lot when they were little. Short transfer to Faro, marina is great, nice beaches” Duvetdweller

With luxury yachts in a bustling marina, waterfront bars and restaurants, golf courses galore and two beautiful golden sand beaches, it’s easy to see why Vilamoura makes a popular Algarve holiday destination.

Families will love trying watersports and stand-up paddle boarding at the Blue Flag beaches of Praia da Falésia and Praia de Quarteira, while the Zoo Marine theme park and AquaShow Park water park provide the perfect fix for adrenaline junkies.

When considering places to eat, Mumsnet users PiperPublickOccurrences and Dicdicnurse advise not to dismiss the restaurants set a few streets back from the marina, as these can be far more affordable compared to those on the waterfront.

3. Lisbon

lisbon

Why Mumsnetters love it

Lisbon is fabulous for kids and teens and somewhere I will make an effort to go back to, which is rare. Public transport is easy to use and there is so much to do. It seemed so unpretentious for a capital city.” bookmarket

Lisbon is very walkable, friendly, safe and interesting - whatever you do you'll love it!” Eyesopenwideawake

It’s great value for money compared to Paris, Rome, etc and has all the old European city charm - just really, really lovely.” ABitOfAShitShow

Lisbon is my happy place. The aquarium is great, get a cab there. Also love the Pantheon, hippo/duck tours are good for children. Sitting on the front by the water is lovely in the evening. Lots of places to eat and listen to music” (Mumsnet user MissyCooperismyShero

If you’re looking for a fun European city break, Portugal’s capital city Lisbon has plenty to offer. From stunning architecture to bustling squares and brightly coloured buildings, you’ll find Instragrammable backdrops at every turn.

Families will love visiting the city’s many shops, restaurants and cafes, while a trip to  Pavilhao do Conhecimento Science Museum is definitely worth a spot on your itinerary.

4. Lagos, Algarve

Why Mumsnetters love it

Lagos is a really pretty town - lots of bars and restaurants and little side streets to explore with shops. There is a beautiful marina and several large beaches with a variety of water sports on offer. Also, there’s lots to explore in the surrounding area - some lovely walks along the cliff tops and boat trips ( dolphins, grotto trips that you can access via kayaks etc.)“ BrigitsBigKnicker

Lagos is my favourite place in the world I think.” devildeepbluesea

The grottos around Lagos are amazing- beautiful walks on the cliffs from the Point Piedade lighthouse and boat trips into the caves and grottos” KnottyKnitting

If you’re looking for out and out relaxation, you can’t go wrong with a stay in Lagos on the southwest coast of the Algarve

Whether you’re exploring the charming cobbled streets of Lagos Old Town, attempting to spot dolphins on a boat trip or riding around the lively square on the Tourist Train, Lagos offers the perfect balance of culture and natural beauty.

Families will love the sheltered and secluded coves of Meia Praia beach, while a trip to the stunning Ponta de Piedade rock formation shouldn’t be missed.

5. Porto

Porto, Portugal

Why Mumsnetters love it

Porto, Portugal. We've recently been... has a beautiful city centre and some lovely beaches. All (theoretically) within walking distance... depending on where your accommodation is.” Ylvamoon

We’re just back from Porto and loved it! We did a Port tour which was great, a boat trip, cable car, Livrario Lello (jury’s out as it’s so busy), Clerigos Tower, Igreja do Carmo and a lot of mooching. Half rabbit street art is worth a look in Vila Nova Gaia. Legs could do with a rest from all the hills now! Such a great city!” AvonCallingBarksdale

On Portugal’s northwest coast, Porto is the country’s second largest city and a great choice for a city break.

Home to some stunning street art including the incredible Half Rabbit made entirely from recycled rubbish, families will love exploring the region's many parks and cafes or hiring bikes to ride along the Douro River.

If you’re travelling with older children who can handle the steps to the top, the Torre dos Clengos offers spectacular views of Porto from above.

5. Carvoiero, Algarve

Why Mumsnetters love it

Carvoiero is a lovely town and has a good waterpark nearby if that would interest your teens.” Forgottenmyphone

I live in the Algarve. Carvoeiro is always popular, central, so easy to access things during the day and busy in the evenings (nice restaurants, beach has entertainment in the summer etc).” m00rfarm

Carvoeiro is a traditional Portuguese fishing resort on the Algarve and it’s a favourite with families who are looking for a relaxed and scenic vibe for their summer holidays.

We love the dramatic coastal scenery, the choice of friendly, authentic restaurants and impressive Blue Flag beaches. It makes a great base for exploring further afield too. Take a boat trip to explore the stunning sea caves and rock formations, or hop in a local taxi and head to the more lively town of Lagos nearby.

Which part of Portugal is good for families?

The Algarve makes a popular choice for families visiting Portugal, and whether you opt for Vilamoura with its pretty marina or bustling Albufeira, you’ll find plenty of beautiful beaches and family-friendly activities to entertain the kids in the sunshine. For families with older children and teens, the cities of Lisbon and Porto are not to be ignored and are both bursting with history and culture.

Mumsnet users love Carvoeiro and Lagos for a perfect balance of modern amenities, beautiful beaches and rich culture.

What’s included in the price of a villa holiday?

The full list of what's included will depend upon the specific villa you stay in, however the vast majority of villa bookings provide all bed linen and towels, with the cost of WiFi and utility bills included in your package.

It's important to leave the villa exactly the way you found it, as many villas request a refundable security deposit to cover the cost of any breakages or damages. They may also charge a fee to bring in their own cleaners at the end of your holiday.

Depending on the location, you might need to pay a separate tourist tax so it's worth checking carefully when booking to see when you might need to pay it. It's also worth asking whether there are any extra fees for use of the facilities (e.g. heating the pool) or for parking on site.

Along with travel insurance, to cover you in case of unexpected cancellation, you may find better protection from cancellation policies when booking through an online travel agency like Booking.com or Vrbo rather than direct with a villa owner.

Do you need to hire a car in Portugal?

Whether or not you should hire a car will ultimately depend on the kind of holiday you’re looking for. If you plan to explore outside the resort or if your villa is far from amenities and key tourist attractions, a car can be helpful. It’s worth mentioning however that travelling by car in busy cities like Lisbon and Porto can be challenging.

Most destinations in Portugal are conveniently located with good bus and tram networks, so it’s easy to explore other local resorts without needing to hire a car.

How we chose our recommendations

Because we know that there’s nothing like a real recommendation, we first headed to the Mumsnet forums to find out which destinations in Portugal were being recommended. We then did some online research, looking at which regions and villas come highly rated on review sites and booking sites like Booking.com, Vrbo, Oliver’s Travels and Tripadvisor.  We scrutinised user reviews before narrowing down our list of the best villas in Portugal for families.
