Look at the design of the toilet. Some actually asked a woman

Or even a woman designed it.

Just in case you can’t see it, the toilet it off centre in the cubicle so there is space for the bin!

Rah!

steppemum · 01/04/2019 22:13

there was a comment on a thread ages ago.

poster said her husband was an architect and was chattign about a big public building he was designing.
I hope you get the ladies loos right, said poster, and her husband was flumoxed. She explained about needing to put loos off centre for the bons and he was floored, completely and utterly amazed. Never mentioned during training, never mentioned in any bulding spec, just not on the radar at all.

husband went off to work all evangelistic about women's loos!

steppemum · 01/04/2019 22:14

bins, not bons, obviously

CountFosco · 01/04/2019 22:17

At work our loos are in the centre but the bins are lower than average so lower than the toilet seat. Such a simple solution.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 01/04/2019 22:38

I remember that Steppe. Didn’t she say ‘don’t forget room for the bins’ or something and he looked confused and said ‘what bin’

The loos where I worked had great big toilet roll holders on the 'wall' on the same side that the door opened inwards. They were too small and it was impossible for anyone pregnant to get round it and shut the door so you had to whistle if anyone came in. Fortunately there were only about 3 women on the floor.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 01/04/2019 23:21

I was in an airport recently, Berlin I think where there the partition was staggered so there was space towards the front of the cubicle for a wheeley bag and at the back, the bin fit neatly to the side. It was epic.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 02/04/2019 07:18

I'm a standard size 14 and struggle to get into some public loos.
I've no idea how anyone pregnant or slightly larger than me gets in!

I just remembered this - I think it is by the amazing public toilet expert that spoke at one of the meetings Smile

thebabessavedme · 02/04/2019 11:54

just make the bloody doors open outwards! then we wont have to do the ridiculous dance round the loo while trying not to brush our legs against it while dangling our handbags over the loo until we can shut the door and hang it on the hook (these are always provided of course Hmm)

greenelephantscarf · 02/04/2019 11:55

I still don't 'get' the ugly, big, smelly sanpro bins.
why not have a normal small bathroom bin that's empied by the normsl cleaning crew.
it seems it's only UK having those big bins that are empied weekly (or less often)

Mix56 · 02/04/2019 12:08

Was at the airport last week giant modern refurbished ladies loos. The bin actaully touched the loo seat. & only 2 sinks. 1 hand drier. bravo

LittleChristmasMouse · 02/04/2019 12:12

just make the bloody doors open outwards!

Surely that risks doors opening into people walking past though?

placemats · 02/04/2019 14:03

That toilet is too low down for women. If ordering a new toilet get it larger and higher. Men will cope with this too.

More women go to the theatre now than men do. The toilet situation now has to be addressed regarding this.

More women than men go shopping. This also has to be address regarding the lack of toilet facilities for women.

Stay at home ladies, pats heads and knees, is the only solution. (sarcasm alert)

redwoodmazza · 02/04/2019 14:13

I've just come back from Singapore and some of the loos there are those ones you squat over. I had to wait for an ordinary one to become available as I didn't think I could manage the other sort.

BorisBadunov · 02/04/2019 15:38

just make the bloody doors open outwards!

The other problem with this solution is, what happens if the lock fails? If the door open inwards, at least you have the option of slamming it back shut and holding it shut while you finish your business. Whereas if it opens outwards ... —shudders—

JellySlice · 02/04/2019 15:43

Look at the design of the bin, too. It's curved, so it angles outwards, no corners to dig into your thighs as you sit.

Definitely women were involved in this design.

MockerstheFeManist · 02/04/2019 15:44

You were only supposed to hinge the bloody doors out!!

How very Michael Caine.

AndromedaPerseus · 02/04/2019 16:04

Public toilets-why is it at least once a week when I use one someone has left wee all over the seat, failed to have flush it after use and generally unpleasant to use. I lament the passing of toilet seats with gaps in the middle which were more hygienic but really there should be noticed in all toilets telling people how to use them properly and leave them in a hygienic state afterwards:

  1. Sit down on the seat , do not stand on it or hover over it
  2. When you have finished wipe your genitals/bum with toilet paper and put used paper into the toilet
  3. Check the toilet seat to make sure it’s clean and dry if not wipe it down with toilet roll and put used paper into the toilet
4.Flush the toilet by holding down the handle fully until the waste contents are gone
  1. Wash your hands with soap and water

Please don't! Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/04/2019 16:19

The doors to the loos in ikea Sheffield open outwards - hence queues of women thinking they were all occupied having tried a little shove. Proud to say I solved the puzzle.

RedToothBrush · 02/04/2019 16:21

Going to a public toilet with a 4 year old and trying to get into the cubicle after the 4 year old...

Some places have family toilets but there are so few of them it's barely worth seeing if they are free.

Just get rid of some of the mens and give more floor space to women!!!

VeronicaDinner · 02/04/2019 16:23

Why would a toilet be too low down for women? What are you all doing that you can't sit down properly?

RedToothBrush · 02/04/2019 16:29

I find loads of toilets too high. If I can't put my feet flat on the floor that's not good for me.

EBearhug · 02/04/2019 16:31

Disabled loo doors are meant to open outwards, I was told in a recent first aid course, because if someone has a wheelchair or collapses, people who come to help will have room to manoeuvre. Obviously no one has ever collapsed in any other public loo, so there's no need for doors to open outwards there.

Also on the First Aid course, the matter of where to dispose of used dressings came up. The ladies' loos all have sanitary bins, but the men had no idea of this.

They only ever think about loos for themselves. I bet women designers wouldn't find it as easy to ignore men's needs.
